I was wondering if I could defer for a year if I get accepted this upcoming cycle, so that I can pursue a MBA abroad or is that frowned upon??? Thank you!

Getting a deferral is dependent upon the individual school. Most have specific reasons as to what they allow, usually illness in you or family or military commitment.

If this was a "once in a lifetime" opportunity or something very difficult to get such as Fulbright, or significant research, etc, then it would be more likely.

In the case of a foreign MBA, I'm highly doubtful that a medical school would grant a deferral.

The only way to know is to ask. They won't rescind an acceptance for asking or even requesting. They'll simply approve or deny the request, and then you move forward accordingly.

They won't rescind if you ask, but you need to know what the process is if you want to go for the deferral request. In my opinion, the MBA pursuit is probably not going to warrant a deferral. You could do that while you're in medical school at an appropriate break in your schedule or after you're done. I know a few faculty members trying to get an MBA.

Not to mention that some residencies that are academic sometimes allow you to pursue an MBA (or other degree of choice) during residency for very cheap (some places I know give 75% reduction, some 80% reduced, one I know is 90% reduced tuition). If after residency, you could also pursue a profession MBA if intending to be in the healthcare industry which cuts the time and cost in half.
