Hey whats im the the pre-pharm program at Albany college of Pharmacy
My grades are in Science/Math:
Bio 1--A
Bio 2--B
Chem 1- A-
Chem 2- B+
Human Anatomy- A
Orgo 1- D
Pre-Calculus--C
Calc- next semester
Orgo 2- Next semester
Physics 1- Next semester
EC: Hospital in the pharmacy from jul 2009, 110 hrs, Hockey team both years
LORS: 4 strong LORS from 2 profs and 2 pharmacy board of directors
PCAT SCORE: 454/600-- 67th Percentile
My question is can i get into pharmacy school with a D in orgo 1 without retaking it, specifically in NY like LIU or albany? I plan on getting an A in orgo 2, i understood the material real well in orgo 1 and had fun, but didnt do well because of hockey practice all the time, but plan on resigning next semester. You think people have gotten into pharmacy with a D in orgo 1 please help im scared.
Thank you.

for your own good, retake it homie.
Medicinal Chemistry, so I've heard, is impossible without good ochem skills.
Well, possible, but so is rocket science.
But they both really suck.
Not necessarily. The thing with Med Chem is that you don't need to know how to do reactions but you need to know how the functional groups and whatnot affect the pH, pKa of the drug, and how also the chemical changes affect the body.
some ochem is needed in med chem and as a pharmacist a strong ochem background is important. I think that retaking it is in your best interest.
You don't need a strong organic chemistry background to be a good pharmacist. I have never seen a pharmacist open up a package insert to look at the structure of the molecule.
i am not saying all pharmacists should look at the package insert and look at the structure of the molecule when making all of their decisions.
There are a ton of things you learn that you need when you are a pharmacist relating to ochem. Like how much molecular weight a compound will have (thus effecting its absorption). whether something with be ionizable or unionizable in certain parts of the body based on the functional groups present (thus effecting its transport).
pharmacokinetics has big ochem properties.
Also prodrug conversions to drugs all deal with ochem reactions. I don't know about you but NE, EPI, etc all deal with reactions I learned in Ochem.
Ah yes, that, well that just requires basic understanding of functional groups, how to push electrons and some stereochemistry and the pH vs pKA thing. They aren't gonna ask you in pharmacy school how the drugs are synthesized.
And we were never really taught about how the reactions deal with prodrugs and whatnot. They just said that something was a prodrug and it got converted in the body, but they didn't tell us that so and so reaction was responsible for it.
Do you guys not have to take advanced ochem at your school or something ? Because just the simple fact that you have to take graduate organic in pharmacy school would lead me to believe that you do need undergrad organic to begin with.
