Can I get into Pharmacy school with a D in Orgo 1 without retaking it?

Hey whats im the the pre-pharm program at Albany college of Pharmacy

My grades are in Science/Math:

Bio 1--A
Bio 2--B
Chem 1- A-
Chem 2- B+
Human Anatomy- A
Orgo 1- D
Pre-Calculus--C
Calc- next semester
Orgo 2- Next semester
Physics 1- Next semester

EC: Hospital in the pharmacy from jul 2009, 110 hrs, Hockey team both years
LORS: 4 strong LORS from 2 profs and 2 pharmacy board of directors
PCAT SCORE: 454/600-- 67th Percentile

My question is can i get into pharmacy school with a D in orgo 1 without retaking it, specifically in NY like LIU or albany? I plan on getting an A in orgo 2, i understood the material real well in orgo 1 and had fun, but didnt do well because of hockey practice all the time, but plan on resigning next semester. You think people have gotten into pharmacy with a D in orgo 1 please help im scared.

Thank you.

Well, that might seem like you take on more than you can handle and you don't realize what might be important.

If you can improve your PCAT (if you can even take it in January) then you still have a chance of getting accepted.

But Organic 1 is important for Organic 2 and other Chemistry-related courses in pharmacy school, so they might look down on that quite a bit.

I thought most pharmacy schools didn't take pre-req grades C- and lower?
Also, at my school we couldn't even take ochem II without passing ochem I with at least a C. I guess you're school is different. I would contact those specific schools you're looking at to find out what's the lowest grade they accept.

for your own good, retake it homie.

Medicinal Chemistry, so I've heard, is impossible without good ochem skills.

Well, possible, but so is rocket science.

But they both really suck.

Yea...you're gonna have to retake it. I think most schools require that you must have higher than a C in all pre reqs in order to apply. If you really want to take orgo 2 next semester you can, but you should repeat orgo 1 in the summer or next semeseter. IMO you don't need very much ochem 1 for ochem 2....just the basic stuff like resonance, some reactions(grignard, sn1, sn2, etc), basic stereochemistry, from ochem 1.

Heres Albany's info for prereqs:
No credit will be accepted for grades lower than "C" (C- is not acceptable) or for physical education courses. ACPHS reserves the right to refuse the transfer of any previously earned college credits.

Ochem is a required course. So you definately will have to retake it in order to get into the school. A lot of schools wont even accept a C-, so you will have to check on their websites on what they accept for their prereqs.

Probably not =/ Most schools require you to have a C or better in ALL of your prereqs.
Also, I think you may be taking on more than you can handle next semsester. Orgo 2 (if you decide not to take orgo 1 again, but I HIGHLY recommend you do) is ALL memorization, you will definitely need to brush up on your precalc skills for calculus if you got a C, and physics is just impossible either way. I think you may need to reevaluate and rethink your schedule and consider taking orgo 1 again. If pharmacy is what you TRULY want to do, there's always next year to apply and you can spread your classes out a bit more so you aren't killing yourself; I was killing myself this semester and I only took physics...good luck with everything though!!

Will you be able to matriculate into pharmacy school with a D in a prereq? No. However, the D does not preclude you from getting an interview and an acceptance. An acceptance would be truly miraculous -- not impossible but unlikely. Your acceptance would probably be on the condition that you retake organic I and pass with a C or better. Ask an advisor at your school about your predicament.

Go ahead and take organic II but be ready to bail at the first sign of trouble (i.e. bad grade on the first test). I'm serious. You don't need another bad grade. Don't endanger your grades in other classes for organic. Physics and calc will keep you crazy busy.

If you pass organic II, sign up for spring/summer organic I ASAP. Many schools accept students that they rejected earlier in the cycle in to fill the seats of accepted candidates that decided at the last minute not to attend. Which is why you have to be ready with your passing organic I grade so you can fill that empty seat.

The two schools I'm hoping to get into REQUIRE an A in both O-chem and calc. But check with your target schools (although it is likely a C is the bare minimum and therefore not competitive)

Your definitely going to have to retake that...Go back to the drawing board and see where you went wrong...If you expect to do well in Orgo 2 your going to have to make sure your proficient in Orgo 1 even if it costs you an extra semester...Its better off to finish up strong!!!

Not necessarily. The thing with Med Chem is that you don't need to know how to do reactions but you need to know how the functional groups and whatnot affect the pH, pKa of the drug, and how also the chemical changes affect the body.

some ochem is needed in med chem and as a pharmacist a strong ochem background is important. I think that retaking it is in your best interest.

You don't need a strong organic chemistry background to be a good pharmacist. I have never seen a pharmacist open up a package insert to look at the structure of the molecule.

i am not saying all pharmacists should look at the package insert and look at the structure of the molecule when making all of their decisions.

There are a ton of things you learn that you need when you are a pharmacist relating to ochem. Like how much molecular weight a compound will have (thus effecting its absorption). whether something with be ionizable or unionizable in certain parts of the body based on the functional groups present (thus effecting its transport).

pharmacokinetics has big ochem properties.

Also prodrug conversions to drugs all deal with ochem reactions. I don't know about you but NE, EPI, etc all deal with reactions I learned in Ochem.

Ah yes, that, well that just requires basic understanding of functional groups, how to push electrons and some stereochemistry and the pH vs pKA thing. They aren't gonna ask you in pharmacy school how the drugs are synthesized.

And we were never really taught about how the reactions deal with prodrugs and whatnot. They just said that something was a prodrug and it got converted in the body, but they didn't tell us that so and so reaction was responsible for it.

Do you guys not have to take advanced ochem at your school or something ? Because just the simple fact that you have to take graduate organic in pharmacy school would lead me to believe that you do need undergrad organic to begin with.

Nope, we do not have advanced Organic Chem in our pharmacy school.
