Yes, if you have a doctors prescription you can compound your own medication. I compounded some butt cream for my little girl a few weeks ago. Magic Barrier Cream, Magic Butt Cream, depends who you ask.

I also mix my own multi-symptom OTC cough and cold formulations for myself and my daughter. I calculate the amount of each single drug-formulation (PSE, GUAF, DXM - all store brand) that I need and use them combination for the desired relief of symptoms. The pharmacist helped me figure out how to do it the first time. It saves me money over buying the expensive name brand combination products. Plus its sometimes hard to find the exact combination you want.

I think that is what you meant.

I don't know - I think the op might be asking about compounding pharmacy. The rules here are evolving due to lots of mishaps.

Is that what you are referring to - compounding specialty products which are not commercially available?

Try to be a bit more specific in what you are looking for. Punctuation & spelling help also!

hmm, well this may sounds a little weird, but my dream is to create a medicine that could cure cancer!!! 🙄 well no kidding, that sounds really big, but that's what i wanna do. however, if i become a pharmacist, then can i do such thing?? or do i have to go into a field that requires a lot of research on cancer??? i mean it doesn't have to be cancer, it can be something else like AIDS..  or maybe something else smaller..lol...And my point is, can a pharmacist do something like this??? *please dont laugh at my question, whenever i dont understand/know something then i just want to ask, it's always good to know more*

If you do cure cancer...1. You wont get credit for it 2. Your hard work will be owned by the company you work for, with very little benefit going to you, depending on whats in your contract. But thats ok if your not worried about getting royalties from your creation. 3. The drug company will probably hold off on your cure until they have cashed in off their other alternative medicines that only treat the symptoms.

I too once shared your dream of "doing something big" in terms of research. Then I pulled out, because for me(in laymans terms) research is a bitch  . The first thing you should do is decide if research is right for you. If your still in college and you have some extra time, you may want to consider getting into a lab with someone who has a lot of yearly publications. Start out small first before jumping into the big time.

But the bottom line is, if you go into research, do not expect to be highly praised or recognized when you discover "something big." You should do it because you like it, otherwise you may regret your career choice. Fortunately, I realized this ahead of time, and I am glad I switched over to pre-pharmacy with the intent on being a retail pharmacist.

And my point is, can a pharmacist do something like this???

Now to answer your original question, you can be a Pharm D. and get a Ph D in pharmacology with specialized programs that are available. I believe its called the Pharm D/Ph D program, which is more competitive. This may require you to take your PCATs as well as your GREs. I dont know much about this program, so good luck to you in finding out the rest. 🙂

Based on her other posts, I'd say she's a Freshman or Sophmore in college.

😀 not really~~~
so what you guys are trying to say is that when I'm young then i can't dream big nor it's an disavantage because i dont really understand the whole process in creating something new? 😉 Does it even matter about the age?
Well, of course when we want to do something big, then we have to start with something small, but since i dont know anything about this, then i must ask to learn more! On the other hand, i believe that you guys are educated people, either pharmacists or someone who wants to be one in the future..must help me out and giving me the info. that i need from you.
Btw, i got accepted to Ucla, ucsd, uci, etc, to go for my BS degree, but i withdraw my offer, because i want to be a pharmacist which the prereg could get to be finished in my college. and so i want to do something like creating such medicine, therefore i want to learn more from you guys and i need useful info, not something that goes agaisnt me by thinking that i'm "dreaming" probably?? 😕 😕
but if i dont dream, then i will never work for it~~~ 👎 🙁

So you're probably 17/18 and withdrew offers to study at university because you just wanna make a dream concoction of drugs that will cure cancer, and well if that doesn't work out perhaps AIDS.

Age is a very crucial determinant in deciding whether you'll even be taken serious, which unfortunately you won't be. If you haven't even started university, your pleas for information on curing cancer will be heard on deaf ears for the most part simply because there is so much that you are unaware of that it's almost a moot point to even delve into it.

Also, probably because of the fact Engrish is your first language you're misusing the word "create". I think you want to "discover" a cure through research, in which case a Ph.D is more up your alley. Retail or Hospital pharmacists don't take 1-2 hours a day to grind up random tablets together and see what happens when they do, that'd be "creating medicine" and probably awesome but it doesnt happen.

Cheers

That'd be fun though... and have the techs try out our concoctions. Although, that would just make the place even more understaffed. 🙁

Or would it?

I know my "we will rock you" concoction of oxycodone adderall and viagra makes the resumes pile up 😉

well. if you want to research drugs and find a "cure for cancer" it isn't a pharmD. i believe it is pharmacology/toxicology degree and those people usually have to get phDs in pharm/tox to find a "cure for cancer"
