Hello,

I will be shadowing a dentist this Thursday for first time. But, many people told me I should shadow General dentist, not OMFS. He holds DMD and MD. It will be my first time shadowing. What should I do? Should I look for General dentist instead of OMFS?

Go ahead and shadow him if you want, but definitely spend more hours shadowing General dentists

Two of the schools I applied to required 1/2 of my shadowing hours to be with a GP. The other half could be a speciality office

I would definitely shadow a general dentist before anyone else. Shadowing an oral surgeon only can put you in a silly spot during an interview especially if I were the interviewer, I would definitely ask you "how do you know that you like dentistry?".... see, very silly spot!

What does shadowing OMFS put me in a silly spot? Should I not follow OMFS because it's my first time shadowing?

You can shadow an oral surgeon if you want but make sure to shadow for at least 100 hours at a general dentist office so you get exposed to the profession. Remember, you do 4 years of dental school to become a general dentist, not a OMFS.

Because watching an OMFS make a ton of money taking out 3rd molars and placing implants is not a good representation of what you would learn in dental school.

Shadow whoever you want, but make sure you have some GP hours. Personally, I had 50 GP shadowing hours, and 50 hours from an endodontist & oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Shadowing hours were never brought up in my interviews.
