I'm a Texas resident.
Re-applicant.
3.8 GPA 3.7 sGPA.
21AA 21TS 20PAT.

Have around 200 hours for volunteering and shadowing each. I took 1 prereq class at a community college and I AP tested out of English Comp. Those 2 things kept me from being able to apply to quite a few schools. Let me know if I forgot any schools that I'd have a good shot at or if there's any schools on my list that I'm wasting money on. Thanks!

Why are you applying to so many schools with those stats?

+1

Count me in as well. Reapplicant with similar GPA's, 22AA 23TS 25PAT. This will be my first time applying OOS, and my list looks similar too yours.

So why exactly did you guys not get accepted your 1st go around?

In terms of AP, as long as you took the required semester hours of English that schools require (and you also took the English Comp AP), having taken the AP does not matter, correct?

For me, it was applying to Texas schools only. Besides excellent stats+EC+volunteer, nobody knows what Texas schools want.

Did you get all three interviews?

No, only 2/3. Baylor rejected me w/o interview. My interviews at the other schools went very well. Although I do think where your hometown in Texas makes a drastic difference.

That's really surprising with your DAT if you had a solid GPA too. I'm from Texas also, just applying to Texas schools this round since I'd really like to stay in Texas if at all possible. I went by the San Antonio campus a few days ago and really liked it.

I do not recommend this at all period.

I really really really don't want to be a 3rd time applicant.

I don't know how heavily this weighs in on dental school admissions but I finished my undergrad in 3 years so I was only 20 at the time of my interviews.

For the schools that don't accept AP credit they want you to have taken english comp 1 and 2 at your university even if you received AP credit. That goes for all courses that people AP out of. Not just english.

I would remove Utah considering you are OOS and have little to no shot for that ONE seat.

UOP. Your stats are good.
Ya, I have Pacific on my list. Someone gave me advice to keep taking upper level bio classes as a postbac. What do you guys think about that? Would that be better than working/volunteering and gaining hands on experience?

Oh no. This makes me sad to hear two people with awesome stats didn't get accepted to the TX schools. I only applied to those three this year because I really really don't want to leave the state due to my husband's job, but (we) might reconsider next year if I get looked over this time. I was feeling pretty good about my chances before, but now I'm not so sure. :scared:

I think taking post bacc classes would be good if you don't have a ton of upper level bio classes already, but if you do, it might be good to get some work and/or research experience instead.

I'm sure you'll be fine. Interviews will come for sure. Don't give them a reason to send you a rejection after that.

Well besides the basic bio 1&2 I've taken genetics and genetics lab, biodiversity, evolutionary biology, microbiology, human physiology, cell biology, and endocrinology.

Thanks! Keeping my fingers crossed.

It sounds like you have lots of upper level bio already, the only thing I could suggest off the top of my head would be histology. Maybe you could take one or two more classes but go ahead and get a full or part time job, as well as add to your shadowing/volunteer hours.

Just curious, but what school do y'all go to?

Yup that's the same conclusion I came too. Good luck!

University of Houston

Let's hope this is a good year for both of us.

I've had similarly good stats and also didn't get in to the TX schools (despite interviewing at all three), but got in out of state upon reapplying. I agree that beyond the basics (good stats + relevant dental and extracurricular activities), the TX schools are sort of a gamble, and require luck. Of course high stats may tilt the gamble in your favor just a little bit, but there is still no guarantee.

If he knew, he wouldnt ask on SDN

Texas is very competitive and with so many that wants it, its just more brutal

Why are you applying to so many schools with those stats?

He wants to be safe than sorry. I got into class of 2017 cuz I applied to 53 schools and got into Minnesota. Interviewed at 2/3 tx schools but ended up rejections in late April and may.

To be blunt: you are being super foolish to enclose yourself in a box in such a highly competitive field in a highly competitive state.

Note: as tuition decreases competition increases.

Why did those two things keep you from being able to apply? Couldn't you have just taken those courses during one of the available semesters between applying and matriculating?
