This might be the dumbest holiday there is. Not quite as frustrating and depressing as Christmas and and vacuous as Valentines Day...but just dumb. At least I can see the point of Xmas and V-Day. Kind of. Columbus Day is just a giant ball of stupidity.
You people are aware that this dude is basically a murderous, racist, scum of the Earth ******* that didn't even discover America, right? Completely ignoring the fact that millions of humans already "discovered" America by living there for a few thousand years, he wasn't even the first European white boy to see America. That'd be a Scandinavian Viking named Leif. Not to mention a group of Portugese were there about 50 years before Columbus, too. So he was, like, the 50th European to see America.
Well, he was the first to enslave them, anyway. This we know.
From Zinn's (R.I.P.) "A Peoples' History of The United States":
Such a wonderful guy. And dude is being put on the same level as MLK, Lincoln, and Washington. It's laughable.
Now, I understand how its sort of a de facto Italian Pride thing to celebrate Columbus Day. Even though he claimed America in the name of Spain and all...but I guess he was ethnically an Italian...so I suppose that's why. But that shouldn't matter....note to Italians: You have more important, more ethical, and over less evil people on your ethnic roster.
Like da Vinci...or Galileo...or Michaelangelo...or the guy that invented Lasagna...hell, compared to Columbus, I could add Mussolini and Emperor Caligula to the list...but nonetheless...can somebody please put an end to allowing this murderer and fraud to have an American holiday?
And in case you were wondering why I care, I went to the DMV today and the ****ers were closed. Stupid god damn murderer of Native Caribbean peoples'.

From Zinn's (R.I.P.) "A Peoples' History of The United States":
Arawak men and women, naked, tawny, and full of wonder, emerged from their villages onto the island's beaches and swam out to get a closer look at the strange big boat. When Columbus and his sailors came ashore, carrying swords, speaking oddly, the Arawaks ran to greet them, brought them food, water, gifts. He later wrote of this in his log:
"They . . . brought us parrots and balls of cotton and spears and many other things, which they exchanged for the glass beads and hawks' bells. They willingly traded everything they owned . . . They were well-built, with good bodies and handsome features . . . .They do not bear arms, and do not know them, for I showed them a sword, they took it by the edge and cut themselves out of ignorance. They have no iron. Their spears are made of cane . . . They would make fine servants . . . .With fifty men we could subjugate them all and make them do whatever we want."
These Arawaks of the Bahama Islands were much like Indians on the mainland, who were remarkable (European observers were to say again and again) for their hospitality, their belief in sharing. These traits did not stand out in the Europe of the Renaissance, dominated as it was by the religion of popes, the government of kings, the frenzy for money that maked Western civilization and its first messenger to the Americas, Christopher Columbus.
Columbus wrote:
"As soon as I arrived in the Indies, on the first Island which I found, I took some of the natives by force in order that they might learn and might give me information of whatever there is in these parts."
The information that Columbus wanted most was: Where is the gold?
