Hello everyone I am a registered nurse that has decided to pursue medicine, I graduated with my BSN With a 3.2 GPA unfortunately none of my science classes count for med school prerequisite because the sciences that I took were geared for nursing. As a result I have to start from scratch (all my nursing pre reqs were done at a 4 year) I have started to take the pre reqs at a community college, I am taking them online with labs being done in person. My questions are as follows...
How frowned upon is it to take sciences online considering I already took sciences in college in person and the lab is real not virtual, I have heard of seem people doing it especially those aiming for DO schools which is fine with me. Ultimately i will have to take o chem 1 & 2 in person though. My other question is how is my post back science GPA determine and how do I figure that out With my cumulative GPA.

Thanks everyone
What clinical work are you currently doing as a nurse? What has been your experience interacting with physicians that you want to be one?

Online coursework is generally not really preferred without due reason. There are plenty of applicants who did not take online prerequisites except for the fact their undergraduate school liked to do mixed formats with in-person and online interactions. Yes your nursing and allied health coursework is not considered science-rigorous enough that many faculty would find comparable to traditional science coursework, but some faculty may be sympathetic. You won't know who they are since both types probably exist on any admissions committee.

You can check how AMCAS and AACOMAS calculate GPA's, including postbaccalaureate coursework. Check their applicant manuals and FAQ's online.

1) How frowned upon is it to take sciences online considering I already took sciences in college in person and the lab is real not virtual, I have heard of seem people doing it especially those aiming for DO schools which is fine with me. 1) Most MD programs will frown on prerequisites being taken online. Exceptions might be made for active duty military. Most DO schools are tolerant of online coursework for prerequisites.

2) Postback undergrad coursework is calculated with your undergrad GPAs from college to create cumulative undergrad GPAs: total GPA, science GPA, and AO (All other) GPA. What is included in the sGPA/BCPM is different for MD and DO schools. DO has no math and includes other sciences that MD doesn't.

AMCAS (MD) BCPM GPA includes: https://aamc-orange.global.ssl.fast...ab328dc/amcas_course_classification_guide.pdf

AACOMAS (DO) sGPA includes Bio, Chem, Physics, Other Science including Nursing: AACOMAS Course Subjects

I am a telemetry nurse working in a small community hospital I work closely with internal medicine doctors and have decided to pursue medicine because of my interactions and observations of how they work, they (as well as all doctors) have a rich understanding of pathophysiological processes and they use this understanding to come up with their treatment plans. I love being a nurse and I love being at the bedside but I wish I could do more for my patients and know more about their diseases and illnesses. I feel limited as an RN and despite putting some thought into becoming a nurse practitioner and although it’s a step in the right direction it doesn’t feel like it is a far enough step forward for me.

I am completely fine with starting from scratch and I also don’t mind only applying to DO. I have thousands of clinical hours all I’ve done since high school is work in the medical field (EMT, Combat medic in the military, patient transporter in a large hospital) like I said I’m working as a nurse now and starting on the 8 or so pre requisite classes I need, I’m also hoping to get in contact to shadow a couple physicians because I know working along side a doctor is different from shadowing one, I hope with all the above med schools will overlook the fact that I did the pre requisite classes online. Thank you both for your input, I really appreciate it
Is there any interest in becoming a Nurse Practitioner? I ask because I perceive NP's and PA's are more engaged with patients than traditional physicians when it comes to primary care. If anything, many NP's and PA's do a lot of work on behalf of the physicians at the bedside.

Not recommended as it will limit you beyond the schools that will accept them. Most schools that I've seen and had any experience with have limits to the number of courses/credits taken online or they simply don't accept them outright.

If possible, take in person.
