Hi Everyone,

I am a Canadian reapplicant (this will be my 3rd time, first time with new MCAT) based out of Vancouver looking for help with a school list. My stats ...

School: Top 20 Liberal Arts
cGPA: 3.75
sGPA: 3.8
MCAT: Old 33, New (05/20) 520

ECs:
-> Full time research job during gap year (1200+ hours), poster presentation upcoming and two publications in the fall (one second author)
-> Four years (1200+ hours) of NCAA athlete, one year team captain
-> 340 hours independent research in Undergrad (poster presentation)
-> 3 days (20 hours) in Flint delivering clean water with the Red Cross
-> 400 hours of clinical work as assistant in Immunodeficiency Clinic
-> 48 hours tutoring underprivileged kids
-> 1600 hours over four summers as a summer camp counsellor
-> 40 hours volunteering at a community breakfast
-> 400 hours Director of a sumer camp
-> 40 hours Hospital volunteer
-> Various awards including Sigma Xi and honours within my major

Current List:

Reach -- Columbia*, UCLA*, Harvard, Mt. Sinai*, Johns Hopkins, Stanford, UVA*, Vanderbilt*, Cornell*
Target -- Albert Einstein, GWU*, NYMC, Oakland Beaumont, Thomas Jefferson*, Stony Brook, Wayne State

What are peoples thoughts on this? Should I avoid schools that I've already applied to?

Stanford only matriculated 2 internationals. With numbers this low there is a good chance that they were internal candidates. Go back to the MSAR. Filter for the 57 schools that consider internationals and consider anywhere they matriculated 5 or more. You should find a few more than what I see on your list.

Ok, I've revised my list a little to fit what you were saying:

Reach -- Columbia*, Harvard, Mt. Sinai*, Johns Hopkins, UVA*, Vanderbilt*, Cornell*, Emory, UPenn*, Yale, WUSTL*
Target -- Albert Einstein, GWU*, NYMC, Oakland Beaumont, Thomas Jefferson*, Stony Brook, Wayne State, Saint Louis, Dartmouth*, Rosalind Franklin, Case*, BU*, Loma Linda

* - Schools I would be a reapplicant at

I might narrow down the list a little, but does this look a little more accurate? Do you think I should cut down on my reach schools, given that I'm a reapplicant and have taken the MCAT more than once?

Much better. Delete Loma Linda (unless you live to serve Christ, and don't drink or have sex outside of marriage). You could delete HMS and Hopkins without reducing your chances much.

Ah, I didn't know Loma Linda was so strict on those kinds of things. Noted.

I know my stats are relatively average for the top top schools but I figured I would take a flyer on HMS and Hopkins just because I think my ECs are pretty good (especially with a publication getting close).

I also had a question about being a reapplicant, if you don't mind. Are they generally looked at harsher? Tougher to get an interview? I'm not quite sure where I stand in that respect. Also, do you think most schools will weight my new MCAT most heavily, or will most average them?

Thanks so much for your help, I really appreciate it!

US re-applicants are expected to have made significant improvements and are barely considered at some schools.
The main reasons for low international matriculation is more complex and schools realize that otherwise excellent candidates routinely fail to get a position.
Very few schools can give a accurate representation of how multiple MCATs are viewed because of the natural tendency of individual evaluators to have an idiosyncratic interpretation. Exceptions would include Jeff that famously averages.

So if I'm understanding you correctly, American reapplicants are generally judged tougher than international ones because of the number of confounding factors that may hinder international applicants?

Yes, that has been my experience.

Very interesting, and welcome news for sure. Again, thanks so much for your help, I really appreciate it.

If I just live to serve Christ and don't drink, will it suffice?
