My class is incredibly hypercompetitive, cliquey, backstabbing, and a bunch of users that are totally out for themselves. There's a lot of drama and fights that goes on between cliques where people are exclusive and derogatory towards classmates that are deemed "un-cool" and classmates make no attempt to support struggling students.

I'm just curious, does that stuff go on at your school too? I'm just wondering if this is typical med school behavior among classmates or are people more chill with each other at your school?

Welcome to med school.

This behavior should not be seen as the norm, and is most definitely not universal. Find classmates who you trust and avoid those who are detrimental to your learning and general well-being. Sadly you can't change the cards you've been dealt, but you can choose how you play them.

I'd wager that the tool to non-tool ratio in medical school is much higher than in the general population simply because that's what the system breeds and selects for. Something about the stress makes people regress to a middle school mentality. They just have no chill. That said, remember why you're there.

I don't mind the over-achievers.
I don't mind the *****s who make us all look bad with their stupidity.
I don't mind the cliquey types who gossip a lot (couldn't care less actually, since I don't even talk to them).
I don't mind the suck-up student government types, because ultimately they're just wasting their own time and that's kind of sad.
I don't even really mind the gunners, even the malignant ones.

But the group I can't stand... I mean, the group I really ****ing HATE are the Social Justice Warriors. Seriously. The WORST human beings you will find on earth that don't belong in a prison cell.
The people who mostly have never worked a day in their life and think they are qualified to protest or petition for various (mostly fictional) injustices, who e-mail the Listserv everyday for their Social Justice clubs, who think they're morally superior because they are a member (or wish they were a member) of a certain "minority" group. If there is one type of med student they really need to purge, it's the SJWs.

The type of med students I can't stand are the ones who complain about SJWs yet bemoan and cry about "PC Culture" and "reverse discrimination." Two sides of the same coin.
w/o all these SJW run amok on med school campuses, there would be no students bemoaning ""PC Culture"" and ""reverse discrimination""; this attitude of bemoaning is due to the SJW

The people who are always throwing hissyfits for nearly anything are far worse, melodramatic, and ill-prepared for the real-world than those that point out how annoying the SJW are.

I had about 10 emails (not a joke) from faculty after the election, which offered sit down sessions for students to talk over what had just happened. If something doesn't go your way, then the world is as good as doomed, apparently. If HC won and they offered these sessions, it would be just as dumb.

You forgot to mention the SJWs that need safe spaces to cope with the microaggressions they deal with on a daily basis

We don't really have many SJW at my school. It can be pretty cliquey I guess but for the most part we all get along. There's some people I don't like, but that's mostly because they're either the dumb ones or overly enthusiastic. Generally I just avoid them.

So are you calling me out as a SJW then? Cause that's not what I'm going for at all, I'm just saying there's a lot of arrogant, unpleasant people to be around at my school, my hope is that its not like that everywhere. I can straight up tell you that at my school there are malignantly mean people that have massively screwed classmates over with petty social drama and exclusive, hateful behavior, so that stuff does go on at some places, not all fictional as you say

I have to crow here that my students lose this attitude as soon as they matriculate.

Sounds like you're back in high school. My sympathies.

Seek out your good classmates. They're in there.

Thanks man, I appreciate it. Part of the problem is that via classmates I initially roomed with last year I fell into the wrong group with such people I'm describing, trying to meet new people now though

No, midlevel creep fills that niche here.
SJW/PC is to allo like URM admissions is to pre-allo.

cbrons is NOT saying that. Just venting. We all have our own pet peeves.

Partly in jest, but partly admitting that I have a problem

i feel like this happens at my school too. idk. meh. i've realized med students are the best company unfortunately.

I think you're like that parents that thinks they know everything about their teenage kids lives.
Beat me to it. People act completely different anywhere within earshot of faculty

I like my class. Smart, Funny, hard working and ready to step in if you need help. I chose my school because the people at my interview fit my personality more. My class is also very big. I think it might be harder if your class size is only 30-50.

Everything you hate about SJWs can be applied to anti-PC crusaders.

I've had the exact opposite experience. The overwhelming majority of people in my class are really kind, friendly, social, and hardworking. I have met 4-5 people who have rubbed me the wrong way (and unfortunately one of them is my roommate) but I've had a great time with my classmates so far.

I love my classmates! They're definitely not perfect, but neither am I. Every person in my med school class has some strength that I can definitely learn from and seek to improve upon in myself. I love my SJW classmates! They all do a wonderful job practicing what they preach, and spend their weekends organizing community health fairs, reaching out to troubled teens, etc. instead of trying to squeeze every obscure fact out of First Aid to get that extra point on Step 1 to get that Derm spot. They have a degree of compassion and patience with homeless patients, IV drug users, and prisoners that I can only aspire to have. Everyone you meet in med school is there because they have some amazing quality. The best thing you can do is to have the humility to find what it is and learn from it.

OP, I suggest you take some ownership for relationships you have built with your classmates thus far. I highly doubt that in group of ~100 people everyone, or most, are sociopaths you describe.

This.

If you had bad luck and didn't get along with your anatomy group, or your first assigned study group, or your random roommate... that sucks and I would feel bad.

But if you literally cannot find even one person in a class of 100ish people who you can get along with, that's on you. Every class probably has a few bad apples, and there's always going to be some cliques, but there's no way that every single one of your classmates is a terrible human being.

My school sent out an email today wishing all the students a "restorative break."

They then went on a 4 paragraph soap box rant about being more socially conscious people, followed by a single sentence congratulating us on finishing the semester.

I'm all for being an ally to the underrepresented and underprivileged, but this is getting rammed down our throats to a point where it becomes half comical, half sickening.

If this was recent, it was probably in response to the election. A lot of people are worried about the outcome and probably appreciate the message of solidarity from their school.

This sounds a lot like the timely email I received from AMSA after the election

The dean at my school recently sat us down in a meeting to tell us we are the worst class that has ever been at our school lol. I believe it. For some reason there is an overwhelming attitude of "OMG I'm not gonna make it I'm gonna fail at life!!" And then half the class is trying to get AOA, lol. I thought I left all that behind in undergrad but I guess not. Then again my friends who are at more competitive/higher stats med schools don't seem to have the same issues with their classmates. I think a lot of my class, including myself, just barely made it into med school in the first place, so that contributes to the anxiety/attitude/overcompensating.

This is not just Medical school. This is the real life.

med school filled with pompous egocentric insecure kids?

damn, news to me.

to answer your question though, med school seems to be like highschool 2.0. gossip, ****-talking, all the drama brings back good high school memories. it always comes back to how insecure people even when they're in their mid-late 20s.

I agree, but when your school starts sending out an email like this every few days, a break to simply congratulate us on a semester well done without bringing politics into it would be appropriate and appreciated.

Thats what happens when med school admissions focus on admitting only the rat racers and SJWs. Total toxicity and mental illness.

I think being in that "borderline" zone for admissions will make a jerk out of a lot of otherwise normal people... constantly worried that someone else with a better numbers is gonna take your spot. So, you overcompensate in medical school so you don't end up in the crappy spot of nobody really wanting you for residency. I get it. But its getting old.
