Car for med school?

Mazda/Subaru > Honda/Toyota

I keep forgetting about Subaru. Subaru has gotten a lot better in terms of reliability. I also would highly recommend Subaru. It also comes with AWD standard for all models, I believe. For Mazda, I'm still a little apprehensive after its engine problems with RX-8. I do love the sportiness of the Speed3. It is extremely nimble.

However, I would still say in terms of reliability, Honda and Toyota take the crown for the longest lasting vehicles that can take the most abuse. I've known Hondas and Toyotas that have gone to over 300k miles without any maintenance except oil changes and brake pads, and perhaps one timing belt change. Some owners sometimes only change oil every 10k miles on these cars.

I also would say that as long as you keep your cars maintained suggested by the manufacturer, your car would last a very long time. My G has 105k miles and also 9 years old with absolutely no mechanical problems so far. *knock on wood* I keep my car maintained and then some.

Any students that have pick-up trucks or SUVs? The local Toyota dealer has good deals on the Tundra models. My folks bought a pickup truck for about the same price as the new accords. They got a super good deal on it.

Don't know about driving a gas-guzzling truck everywhere though.. lol

I don't see why not. A cardiologist I shadowed drove a lifted truck to the hospital everyday. Pretty sweet.

There are plenty of pick-ups, SUVs and other peasant vehicles in physician parking lots. Get a slightly used Japanese car and run it to the ground. Chances are it'll still be running when you graduate.

I'll be driving my first car, 2004 suzuki, into the ground. Well, until I finish residency or becomes irrepairable. 7 years to go!

I'm driving a 2002 Toyota Echo. I haven't washed it in 7 years, why bother? There's a hole in the floorboard. One of the hubcaps fell off years ago. You can't hear anything in that car if you're going over 50mph because of how much it vibrates at high speeds. Some of the steering wheel has started disintegrating. The structural integrity of this car is so questionable I dare not fart in it because it might explode. I have every intention of driving that thing until it dissolves in the rain one day, hopefully after my student loans are paid off.

I feel like I might be the poorest person accepted to medical school this cycle after reading this thread.

If there is a hole in your floorboard, I'm surprised you passed safety inspection in your state, unless your state doesn't have one.

At least your problems aren't mechanical. The vibrations are probably due to unbalanced/out of alignment wheels.

Mazda? I know almost nothing about cars, but I know that Mazda is a POS.

Look at the new Mazda3 its really nice. Plus mazda has the miata one of the best drivers car at any price range! Not to mention there lineup overall is way nicer then the competitor from toyota and even honda.

The RX-8 is a completely different engine. It's a wankel engine and using that to judge the rest of the brand would be a fallacy. It's not just the speed3 that is nice but the lineup was mostly redone recently and they did an awesome job. Its up there with VW for most refined car in the lesser price ranges. Reliability wise Mazda and Subaru both are pretty good also. If you take care of your car it should last a while for the most part. I have had a german car since I got my license and at this point its high mileage. Still haven't had any issue. Subaru is great if you live somewhere with snow. Standard AWD (besides the BRZ). It's a great system too.

I'll admit, it is a looker. However, for reliability and longevity, Toyota and Honda still wins. Toyota and Honda and also Nissan with Jatco previously produce their own transmissions. Mazda outsources their transmissions to Jatco and Ford. Subaru also gets their transmission from Jatco.

If you're talking about reliability, I would put Toyota and Honda in the lead. They make their transmission in-house. Nobody on here have talked about Nissan. Nissan, Mazda, and Subaru all share transmissions from the same company. I can tell you that Jatco's transmissions aren't as reliable as Toyota and Honda. Honda had a few transmission problems long ago, but that's been resolved now.

I own a G, so I'm already biased towards Nissan. Objectively, it won't last as long as Honda or Toyota. I've taken care of my car way more obsessively than my dad, and do fluid changes way more frequently. His Honda Odyssey is now at 200k miles with absolutely no mechanical issues at all. He changes his oil every 10k miles, and uses those cheap oil change shops. I use Mobil 1 in my G and religiously change every 4-5k miles. I also change my transmission fluid every 50k miles. My dad hasn't touched his transmission fluid.

I really like Mazda3. I wanted it to be my first car. However, many of my friends have issues with their Mazdas and my family has two Hondas for 10/16 years without issues. We also didn't have a single problem with our Maxima for 13 years (was a rebuilt) until I totaled it. I now have a Sentra. I know it's n=1 but I think that's how all people are when it comes to cars.

I have a 8 year old german car with over 100 thousand miles on it. Haven't had a single issue with it. n=1 stories aren't particularly helpful. Consumer reports ranks mazda highly in terms of reliability. Personal accounts when talking about reliability of cars isn't helpful.

Toyota's transmission may be fine unfortunately they will just accelerate out of control for no reason 😛

Nissan is a POS. Ever since they partner with Renault, the quality has gone down the drain. Stick to Acura, Lexus, or BMW. Also, if you do get a new car, you need to buy one of those extended warranties that will only cost a few K's extra. It's worth it especially when it comes to German cars.

If you're paying 8k for a car, it better not need any work.

My family and I buy all of our cars off craigslist. Never paid more than 2k for a car in the past decade. Sometimes you have to put a few hundred into it, but then you should expect at least a year before needing anything else.

I paid 1900 for my current car and I would say I have put about 1500 into mechanic bills over the past 4.5 years that I've had it. Of course, I change my own oil/sparkplugs/filters etc. That helps. If you buy the Haynes manual, you'll save yourself a load of money.

...but I'm talking to a bunch of premeds here. You all probably take your caddys to the dealer and put it on daddy's credit card. 😉

Sorry, I don't buy used cars for less than 5-6K.

I drive an Infiniti G35x. I believe its engines are very robust. Transmissions are fine for the newer generation. My car is 9 years old with no mechanical problems, and still drives like new. I already have two Lexus's, and they're not sporty enough for me. The steering wheel and suspension are too soft and the newer design is very cheap and full of plastic. I just drove the new NX250t for a week straight as a loaner from the dealer and didn't really like it much. The lines are also very jagged. Acura is a nice car although the interior is outdated and also looks cheap. I'm still looking to buy the RDX as my next vehicle.

As for technology and interior design, I would say Infiniti has the best looking and most future-proof interior. My car interior still looks nicer than some of the newer generation cars out now, IMO.

I would also never buy a German car. I believe leasing makes more sense with German. At least you get to change cars every couple of years and they'll always be under warranty. I won't have to worry about expensive maintenance and upkeep costs.

This might be offensive to 50% of the population out there. But, I'm going to say it anyway: women in general are horrible at taking care of cars including their driving style and their obliviousness of small simple maintenance stuff. So, the problem might be your sister in the first place. I lent a 2009 vehicle to my wife for 4 weeks and she bumped the rear bumper into another car while trying to get it out of our driveway.

Anyway, if it's a brand new car, any maintenance issue should be free.

What time of the month is it a good time to go car shopping? I've read that it's near the end of the month, but during certain seasons (summer, for example) you can't really haggle with the dealers as much as you'd like. My goal is to have a car by May/June but depends on the deal. If anybody has any advice , I appreciate it!

Shop in December. They want to clear stock before New Yr. I always get great deals around this month.

any japanese brands/models you might recommend that are affordable? (not luxury models)

Been saving money for the past 5 years and I just bought a 2016 toyota corolla for the price of 18K zero mileage is more than enough and should last me until I am an attending lol if I get there, if not longer. I live in the northeast and it's perfectly fine in the snow. So I totally recommend toyota!! I think Yaris runs for like 14K but I don't like the look of them. I figured getting a good, reliable, zero mileage car is a better investment in the long run. My poor 96 Corolla **** the bed lol but that just goes to show how good toyota's car are.

Lol I see what you're saying but no. lol She literally leased the new 2015 x5 and it hasn't even hit its first service appointment yet. Barely has 7,000 miles on it. I've never heard of any brand-new vehicle that goes back to the dealer after just 7,000 miles.

Get a Benz; drives better, more reliable, more classy.

The most common reason for the check engine light is an incorrectly placed gas cap. I am being 100% serious. Tell her to rescrew it in.

LOL that is exactly what her husband said and they did that to no avail. Off to the dealer they went lol

Looking for something with more power and more refinement... but has the reliability of the honda and toyota brands. Thanks for the suggestion.
I'd say maybe a g37 used .

Why did you decide not to go with say, the toyota camry? Is it true the corrolla is "really loud" on the road? (while your driving it).

In that case....

1) I'm not super worried about your lack of driving skills at this point. Teenagers are almost universally terrible drivers when they start out. This is why there's a thing called "driver's ed."
2) Worry about driver's ed, high school and college before you worry about commuting in med school. You're putting the cart before the horse.
Theoretical cart, notional horse.

Price differences, honestly. I didn't see a point in Camry and I know they're good too because my mom has one but if my 96 Corolla lasted me 19 years with minimal maintenance, I'm sure this '16 will too.

I personally didn't notice any loud noise on the road that was considered out of norm for an acceleration of a V4. Runs perfect and I expect it to be that way for a while with minor timeline maintenance along the way.

I like the sedan look to Toyota. I hate the boxy look that Prius or yaris and Honda Fit has. You could get away with Kia too but I don't know how they are. I heard Hyundai is decent priced too. But they make loud noises.

"Inline 4". Why would you want to drive a Corolla for 19 years? Don't you want to drive something more comfortable and luxurious?

You misread my post. My old car, the 96 Corolla is 19 years old. I just bought a 2016 Corolla. I'm gonna drive it until I **** the bed. I'm not a big car fan. I don't need luxury cars nor do I care for one. I need something reliable that will get me from point A to B safely. Even when I become an attending I don't think I'll spend anything more than 30K. I don't see a point.

I beg to differ. Go ride in a Benz/Range Rover etc and you'll see how amazing luxury cars are. As an attending, you'll already be stressed enough, don't let an economy car stress you more.

I'm good, man. I'm sure it's great and I'm sure it's fast, luxurious and feels like heaven but I think I'll be OK. I won't be rolling in something that smokes and overheat, but I also won't be rolling in something like Porsche or Benz. I just see my money being well spent on something else.

No, not yet. I'm applying this upcoming cycle. The advisers here suggested I could possible apply this cycle but I was too stupid and afraid so I lost a year, oh well. Hopefully I could get in the first time around. Are you applying both MD and DO?

Mostly to DO schools. Good luck to you lol. I now have a deep and profound respect for CNAs and Nurses...

I've been a CNA for 4 years. It's a good gig and all my ladies and gents I work with work very hard to make ends meet and they do it with a smile. I'll never forget them when I become a doctor. Any DO schools you're really aiming for? I'm still iffy as to how many schools I'm applying to. But based on my stats I have the highest chance with DO so I might apply to like 12 DO and 3 MD lol.

Mine is not great...
CGPA: 3.55
SGPA: 3.39
MCAT 510

I think you should be able to get into DO schools. But be sure to apply to linkage post bacs as a plan b

I don't know anything about linkage post bacc, tbh. Worst case scenario, I'll just do a DIY post bac and try to bring up my SGPA. I'm hoping 12 DO school is broad enough that it could land me at least one acceptance. But each year is getting so competitive. Would love to go to an establish program with good rotations.

A linkage program guarantees you an interview and or acceptance upon hitting a target gpa. I highly recommend it.

I suggest looking into LECOM

You don't have to worry about linkeage programs based on your numbers. They are on par with some of the more competitive DO programs. Schools like KCU, DMU, PCOM, CCOM are target schools for you. MD schools would be your reach. Lower tier DO schools your chances are good at.

Thanks. It sucks too that there's only one MD state school in my state and it's bloody competitive. I'm willing to go anywhere. In the end I'll be a doctor and that's what matters the most.

Apply to some MD programs and see what happens. You will probably get into one of the established DO programs that have a large allumni base, good hospital affiliations, and a established curriculum. You're going to be fine. I love my DO school!

@AsianPersuasion I agree with @DoctorSynthesis . You should have no trouble getting into a DO school, and maybe your in state MD school

same thing happeend to me.
I had worse stats than you in every category and i got like half a dozen II's from DO. I didnt apply MD.

Thanks for the support! It's nice knowing I have a shot at this dream. My pre-med advisor has been putting me down a lot throughout this process to the point that I didn't think I'd had a chance in anything.

yeah, a few. I was also "lucky" to able to cancel a few interviews too. Most of my II came between late aug-oct. Then 1 or 2 nov-dec. Nothing since then.
