I'm looking into the Master of Public Health program at the University of Louisville, my home town. I am definitely interested in this career path, however I need to know the specifics of the career. I am a very family oriented person. Does anyone know if this career path will coincide with spending time with your own family? Will I be working more than 40 hours a week? Does anyone know the prospects of getting a job right after graduation? What about the salary in health management? I will be staying in Louisville, KY, so is the job availability high?

There are a lot of career options in public health. I have not heard of there being major problems having a good work-life balance in health management specifically (but do not work in that field myself).

I don't know how things are in KY but here in CA public health has taken a beating in recent years due to budget cuts. There are still jobs in research and in private consulting for MPH's with practical skills, however (software, stats, etc.). My own job in research has very nice hours, although I'm paid less than nurses and certain other healthcare professionals.

Maybe you can contact your local public health department about doing an internship or somehow getting exposure to what it's like to work in public health in your area. Also check online job postings (be sure to look out for experience requirements).

Yes, in general expect to work more than 40 hours per week if you're in management. But I've met people who made it clear to their employers about their family and other priorities. And their employers have respected that. Your family is more important than your work, so I hope you stand by your values and convictions, if an employer is trying to make you work some 60+ hours. Salary ranges greatly. I don't know about the market over there, but I'd say starting salary for managers here in California is 55-70k depending on the setting. Of course, c-suite executives can make 250k+.
