Your company installs kitchen cabinets. Mrs. Robinson calls you one day saying that one of your workers was sick while working in her house. This worker infected the entire family.

  1. What do you say to Mrs. Robinson?
  2. Who, if anyone, is at fault?
  3. Should you charge clients higher costs if you start implementing more personal protective equipment (e.g. masks) in the workplace?

1. "Huh. Well.. Everyone ok? We'll check on our end. Was he wearing a mask?"
2. "If our guy was sick, its our fault probably. But.. what about your exposure risk from family members, this stuff is contagious dontcha know?"
3. How much are masks again?

1. "Yes ma'am, I'm sorry to hear about your family. Be assured we will do a full investigation to make sure that everything that should be done on our end will be done. We take this kind of matter very seriously, and any information you can give us will be much appreciated."

2. This entirely depends on the result of the investigation. For one, it's not even made clear if her family was present at the time of the installation. Also, someone could have noticed her or one of her family coughing etc. days prior perhaps during a consultation. And of-course there is the possibility that our worker did show up to work while sick and infect everyone. Given the possible legal ramifications, due-diligence in all regards would be paramount.

3. A business will do whatever it must to remain profitable (that is how businesses work). If the cost of necessary equipment affects the viability of the business, then that number will have to be accounted for somewhere, potentially in the price of the service. At the implied scale of our business, I wouldn't expect face-coverings to be a significant enough cost to warrant any changes.
