So I've been searching all over this forum to find one questions: how many has been accepted to a pharmacy school with JC classes??

It's my last year in college. I am a psychobiology major. I have most of my classes done, but I want to take NPB and MIC at a JC because it is cheaper and I wouldn't have to spend another year at my college. Also, I wanted to retake a bio and a general chem class there because in both classes, I recieved a C. Please, please, please, has anyone been in my situation and went ahead to take the JC courses and got into a pharmacy school? Thank you sooooo very much for answering.

I Haven't been in your situation, but I do know that most schools hold preference for people with BS degrees. Will you have a BS degree when you take the community college courses or not? If you already will have a BS then I don't think it should be a problem, but if you don't I would suggest getting your degree first.

I would be holding a BS degree. I have read on this forum that a lot of pharmacy schools look down on people who take CC courses as pre-req, even if they do have a BS. I e-mailed schools and they said it was okay, but then people on this forum had other experiences...that's why I'm wondering if anyone in my case ever got into a pharmacy school.

Ahhh...soo stressful 😕

This question is posted again and again - and you will probably get the same polar answers too...

People that have gone to CC will say its not an issue - and those that have not will say that it is...

In truth, it doesn't matter what we think. Each school will have its own opinion concerning CC credits. To find your answer, you will have to contact the specific school and ask. That way, instead of hearsay - you will have the facts. This forum is an excellent resource, but this particular question always seems to draw a line in the sand. Also, each school tends to have an information thread. People that are applying to that specific school will frequent the thread. Asking the people that post there might also be a good idea. If you have any other questions or concerns, feel free to post.

~above~

p.s. - my personal opinion is that the question concerning CC credits is a null issue if you already have a BS. The argument is that CC classes are easier, but if you already have a BS from a 4yr university - it means you can hang with the big boys already... just my .02

Like I said, I did e-mail schools and they said that they don't look down upon students that take JC classes, but then others have different experiences. All I want to know is if anyone has taken JC classes and have been accepted. I'm not asking for what people think or what schools think. I just want to know if people actually get accepted to pharmacy schools with a BS and JC classes. Thanks for the replies and information.

mystical_03,

I also got my B.S. in psychobiology and retook microbio, gen chem (1semester), o-chem (1 semester) and general bio (1 semester) at a JC. I have been accepted at MCPHS and had 3 interview invites for CA schools this year.

So, it is definitely possible to get in! Just make sure you have good ECs and pharmacy experience too. 😀

Thank you soo much, Swanchick84! The reason why I am so stressed out about this is that my cousin was on the interview panel. She told me that whenever a person with JC courses came in her and her partner quickly assumed that the person was not "pharmacy level". I am so relieved now. Congratulations, Swanchick84!

Every college course I ever took was at a junior college. I graduated with an A.A. in pre-pharmacy and was accepted into UF's COP last year. The only reason I could see a school looking down on CC/JC students is if the two schools were not in the same state. Most states have equivalence requirements, because that is the main reason people attend JC/CC -- to later transfer to a university. I'm sure there are JC/CC's with bad reputations just like there are universities with bad reputations, but generally speaking they should be viewed as equal by the college.

My college has no problems with people taking a couple of prereqs at a CC. However, there is a prejudice against CC only students. They want to see if you can survive regular 4 year university work. Also, they've gotten burned a couple times from CC only students. Meaning, this person listed that he took organic chem 1 and 2 at a CC. However, their organic 1 and 2 was equivalent to most places organic chem 1.

I'm just going to say I've spoke with the dean of my school of choice and he said most of the students failing out are his 4.0ers from CCs and people that barely got a BS degree at a university are in the top % of the class. I think because of this trend everywhere a degree AND real job experience goes a very long way even if it's not directly related to pharmacy. He told me that the more I show I can hack it the better. This school has a 60%+ fail out rate and they just want to find people that will be there in 4 years, no matter how pretty or ugly their GPA and PCAT.

I got accepted at Midwestern-CPG this year. I have taken ALL of my prereqs at a CC. I had a 3.94 GPA when I applied. It was a struggle but I scored 87 on the PCAT, and I took it before I ever set foot in an Organic Chemistry or Anatomy & Physiology class so I don't think "hanging with the big boys" will be a problem for me.

My point is, community colleges are never a first choice, but for some who work full time and support a household, they are the only choice. If pharmacy schools can understand that, I'm sure they will understand if you have a few classes from a CC. And interviews matter!! If you sound bright and articulate in your interview it will count for a lot.

I have a BA and an MA (non-science) and took some of my prereqs at CC and some at University...

No problems getting in.

A 60%+ fail out rate in pharmacy school?

Exactly. I wouldn't even bother with a school with a 60%+ fail out rate. That's a problem with the educators, not the student population.

Could be. Or maybe he was wanting to get a reaction out of me. I heard that stat more than once though. I can't say but, I know several people that graduated from it. They didn't say they thought it was extra hard. I wonder if it's just who they let in, like he seemed to think. This was his first year being dean. They have more required classes to get in than any other school I've seen and I'm told they have a lot more (busy) work. I think it's the load of stuff, not the difficulty of it. I was told that people get sick of having no life and start getting behind. Once that happens, there isn't any catching up. The dean looked me straight in the face and said I'd have to find a way to pay for it because there was no way I could work at the same time. It will be hard to adjust to school full time after working full time and making money.

There really needs to be an FAQ for this forum >_< This question is asked weekly.

Seeing some of the posts in this thread, I'm confused.
Your schools require you to get a bachelors degree first to apply to a pharmacy school?
