Just wondering who else out there is hoping for a call from CCLCM. From the interview list, it doesn't look like there are that many of us. So this thread may get lost before it even gets started... I think I may have been at their first day of interviews, but I've been told I probably won't hear until next week some time. What did everyone else think who has visited the school??? CCLCM is pretty much at the top of my list.

:luck:

Well I just interviewed on Monday, but I agree with you regarding CCLCM. I LOVED it and it's definitely at the top of my list as well.

I'm going to CCLCM in about a week, and I can't wait for this one.

Good luck to everybody!

I'd pretty much kill for a seat at CCLCM. I was only complete Sept 26th, so I haven't heard anything about interviews yet...

Pretty much? If there was a clock tower... :meanie: (KIDDING)

I was complete at the end of aug. Last week I called and apparently my reviewer took a really long time with my file. They finally offered me an interview that same day, but the first available date is in Jan. I don't think that helps my chances much 🙁 I really didn't want to bother them, but I guess I should have called way earlier.

Aww crap...I hate how these kinds of things are out of our hands. I hope I can get in January.....

Glad to know you all are out there. Good luck everyone on their interviews!!! The interviewers were very cool, and the students were extremely down-to-earth. But then, I've always gravitated toward people from Ohio. (When I lived on the East Coast, all my best friends were from Ohio.) So I think the two best things about CCLCM are 1. PBL learning sans lectures (although they do have seminars--not sure what the difference is), and 2. the fact that they will facilitate whatever you want to get involved in. I like freedom, and CCLCM leaves their students about as uncaged as you can get!

Cheers!

I mostly thought the program really fit what I want to do, primarily be a clinician but stay involved in research, and I also thought the curriculum was great, the students seemed really happy, and the faculty were amazing. Being from the Midwest, I felt pretty comfortable in Cleveland as well.

Yes, you were here for the first week of interviews, going by your MDApps profile. The adcomm met on the 18th, so you should be hearing something soon. Good luck. 🙂

Don't stress yourself out. It probably won't affect your chances very much, if it all. There are still open seats in January. I interviewed in January two years ago and was accepted without being on hold first.

Like I told the other person, if you get invited for a January interview, you can still be accepted. At leat one of my classmates was a February interviewee even.

The difference between lectures and seminars depends on the seminar leader. Some seminar leaders are very interactive, have us break up into small groups, pimp us, have us come up and write stuff on the board, etc. Other seminar leaders aren't quite with the program, and their seminars basically are lectures. We aren't supposed to say that L-word here, though. 😉

I'm a second year student. If you guys have any questions about CCLCM, feel free to post and I'll do my best to answer them. I'll try to get some of my classmates to stop by and check this thread too. Good luck Rooter and anyone else who's coming to interview soon.

cclcm seemed pretty intense and many students are older and have like PhDs or MPH's so its kind of intimidating...also its also intimidating that you're constantly being evaluated on your performance in discussions and stuff like that....seems pretty stressful if you're not always on the ball..but its an amazing place. it would be hard to say no to if accepted

I think that medical school in general is pretty intense, though that probably comes out in different ways at different schools. No matter where you end up, there is a ton of info you will have to learn in a relatively short period of time, and there's no easy shortcut for learning it all, unfortunately. You are right that this program does seem to attract a lot of older students--well, both Case programs are like that. But most of the older students don't have PhDs, and it's not like the people with PhDs know everything about everything. Of course, they're very knowledgeable about their PhD subject, but they don't know any more than anyone else does about other things outside of their field. I guess what I'm trying to say is, you don't need a PhD, or even an MS, to make it through this program. Having a grad degree won't instantly make you into some kind of med student superstar. As for the eval system, it takes some getting used to, and not everyone will like it. That's perfectly understandable. But we all have to pick our poison. When I was in your shoes, the thought of spending two years having to memorize everything and getting tested every couple of weeks was a lot more intimidating to me than the CCLCM eval system. 😛

do you know if they rank the hold list? and do they usually let you know within two weeks post-interview?

count me in on the CCLCM lovers! I love the idea of the research and lots of PBL. I'm interviewing there and case in november and I cannot wait!

The students I met were not intimidating...at all... the complete opposite if anything. The way I see it, aim high and hope to be the absolute dumbest person in the class by a mile. Because you'll be pulled up to the level of the other students and ultimately learn more. If I am the smartest person in the class by a mile, then I only have the professors to challenge my intellect. And that's depressing. In fact, I feel sorry for geniuses. They must be sooooo bored. (Okay, not that sorry)

I don't think so, but I'm not sure. If they do, they don't tell people where they are on the list. Adcomm meetings are every two weeks, so how long you have to wait depends on when you interviewed. The last meeting was the 18th and the next one is on Thursday (the 1st). If you get accepted, Dean Franco will call you the week after the meeting when your file got discussed.

I don't think any of us are bored in that sense. I like your philosophy about wanting to be with people who are smarter than you are, and I feel the same way for the same reason. I'm glad you had a good interview day. I don't think that the students here are intimidating either, or at least we don't try to be. 😳

Well, I was told I'd hear this week or next week. Apparently it's not going to be this week. Hope it isn't bad news... 🙁

I don't think you should assume the news will be bad, because I know Dean Franco has been really busy. The second years are doing the NMS (neuromusculoskeletal) block right now, and she is one of our instructors. (She's a psychiatrist.) This week she gave two seminars for us. She also talks to interviewees on every interview day and sees patients. Plus she's our Dean of Students along with being Dean of Admissions, so she has those responsibilities as well. I wouldn't be surprised if she hasn't had a chance to make calls yet. I know it sucks to wait, but hang in there, and good luck. 🙂

cclcmer can you tell me whether or not a car is a necessity if attending cclcm or case and whether waldorf is representative of the housing near case? I stayed in waldorf but really just hated it because it seemed so run down and dirty...thanks!

About the car: it depends on who you ask. Most people do have cars and would say that it is necessary to have one. But there are two people in my class who don't have a car, and they seem fine. One walks or takes the bus and is definitely not planning to get a car even for third year. The other person with no car also walks or gets a ride with another student, and I don't know if that person will get a car for third year or not. So I guess I'd say, no, it's not an absolute necessity, but most people do have cars. If you don't have one, you will have to choose where you live much more carefully versus people who have cars.

About the housing: I've never seen the Waldorf, but I've heard it's pretty awful and overpriced from everyone, now including you. 😛 Most CCLCM students don't live there, or if they do during first year, they move out when their lease ends. There is plenty of affordable, decent housing close to campus available in Cleveland Heights and Shaker Heights. There are also a few students who live further out in the suburbs, and at least one person I can think of offhand who lives downtown. I also know that some students have lived on the Case campus in grad student housing in the past. I don't know how nice that is or how the prices are, but it's an option anyway. If you're not going to have a car, I recommend looking in Cleveland Heights. Probably like half of the students live there. When you come for your second look in March, that would be a good time to look around at apartments and talk to students about the best places to live. Cleveland Heights is even closer to the Case campus than to our campus, so you can't go wrong living there in terms of being within walking distance of school no matter which program you pick. You could easily live right across the street from Case if you wanted to.

CCLCMer, you really are an angel. Thanks for answering our questions. I have another one. So, do people who aren't accepted right away get put on hold and considered later? Or are they waitlisted or rejected right off the bat? I'm feeling pessimistic about not having heard anything yet and am curious about the possible scenarios. I wonder how many applications they received this year. I guess if I get axed from a school that only takes 32 students from a pool of ??? I shouldn't feel so bad. If only I didn't want to go there so badly... Mayo is up there on my list, too. But odds are against me there as well. Ho hum.

My understanding is that most people get put on hold post-interview. Hold is not a rejection or a waitlist. It just means that they didn't make a definitive decision on you yet and they will reconsider your app in March after they finish all the interviews. So if you end up being on the waitlist or rejected, you usually wouldn't find that out until the spring. Some people do get accepted right away, and in past years Dean Franco has called them by phone to let them know. I'm not absolutely positive that she's doing that this year, but I'll try to find out for you.

If you made it to the interview stage, you have a good chance because the biggest cut here is definitely post-secondary. I'm not sure how many completed apps there are this year so far, but last year there were around 1300, and it will probably be around the same or maybe a little more this year. They said they're planning to interview about 250 people.

did the committee for cclcm meet today?

and when does the committee meet next for case?

Yes, the CCLCM committee met today. Those of you who interviewed today (November 1) or earlier were reviewed. Good luck, everyone. 🙂

Sorry, I don't know when the UP adcomm meets.

when should we expect some sort of notification about our status then for cclcm? do they email this information and if so, promptly after the meeting or later? i think they already met once but so far nobody seems to have heard from them....anxious to know!

No, they send letters in the mail, never emails, and it takes a week or two after the CCLCM adcomm meets because Case has to approve CCLCM's decisions. After they hear back from Case, Dean Franco will call the accepted people and everyone who was reviewed will get a letter in the mail.

oh...thanks for the info. but i'm curious to know why case needs to approve cclcm's decisions? i thought they were separate entities

My understanding (maybe CCLCMer can confirm) is that you are admitted to either the college (CCLCM) or the university (Case) programs if you applied to both. Basically they decide where you would fit best.

Yes you can definitely be admitted to both. A lot of the students there were talking about deciding between the two programs.

i'm pretty sure applicants can be admitted to both

Yeah, I think so too. That is what I was told from someone there, that best case scenario you get into both and choose. But that's just what I was told.

They're quasi-independent, in that CCLCM has its own adcomm and sends out its own invites and acceptances separately from the UP. But everything CCLCM does is coordinated with Case. We are part of Case, and they approve all of the CCLCM decisions. Dean Franco is on the UP adcomm also.

No, the two programs have separate acceptances, so you can be accepted to one or the other or both. I was accepted to both programs two years ago, and so were lots of other people.

Yeah, I think so too. That is what I was told from someone there, that best case scenario you get into both and choose. But that's just what I was told.
Right. If they both accept you, they will even coordinate the second looks back-to-back for you, so you can revisit both programs over one weekend to help you decide.

Off-topic from admissions, but does CCLCM require attendance at their pre-clinical lectures?
Yes, all classes here have required attendance. We don't really have lectures per se though like what they have at other schools.

What lectures? CCLCM is 100 percent small group/PBL.
It's about 1/4 PBL and 1/2 seminar, with the rest being clinical. The seminars are often done with the entire class of 32, which isn't small group by our standards, though I suppose it would be for most med schools. 😛

If your ideal program is one where you dont have to go to class, this isnt the one for you.
Right. We have no packets here, no videoed lectures you can watch on line, etc. There is a lot of group learning. If you are the kind of person who likes to study independently, you won't like this program.

I might be stupid, but I am still kind of confused on the difference bw CWR and CCLM, with the exception of the extra year.

I might be stupid, but I am still kind of confused on the difference bw CWR and CCLM, with the exception of the extra year.

It's a different school. Students at CW are taught by CW faculty, while students at CCLCM are trained by CCF faculty. CCLCM emphasizes small group learning in seminars and PBL sessions and has no formal lectures and no exams, while CW is about 50% PBL/50% lecture.

For those of you who interviewed at CCLCM did you stay with student hosts? Did you interview at Case as well? I'm interviewing at both and am wondering if I should look to stay in a hotel as I don't want to overstay my welcome...
What worked best for you guys?

I stayed at the Intercontinental, b/c I was interviewing two days. It was $109/night, and it's about a 3 minute walk from CCLCM and maybe a mile from CW. It is an amazingly nice hotel.

I did both. I interviewed at Case and CCF two years ago and spent two nights at the Intercontinental Suites Hotel (go to the SUITES, it's a lot cheaper than the regular Intercontinental) and one night with a student. If you're going to both interviews, see if you can stay with a UP student and a CCLCM student so that you can pick both people's brains. Or spend one night in a hotel, one with a student. Good luck!

When I called about pricing, the suites were $10 cheaper... I have no idea which one is better.
