thanks caffeineaholic! i still remember that we interviewed together at cinci in september though i don't know who you are 😛

anyway congrats on Case! that was definitely one of my top choices, and i was really depressed when i got put on hold. i'm sure you have a bunch of wonderful choices and more decisions to come.

i finally made it back home to Ohio from my interview and I still feel like I dreamed the entire thing up. I guess I will be waiting for my acceptance package to make sure I wasn't hallucinating.

wow, this is surreal!

Ha, just wait until you see the first semester's tuition bill. It will seem totally real to you then. 😉

Seriously, though, congrats again to everyone. Caffeinaholic, don't feel bad about the hold. Custard is completely right. Most people get put on hold initially, and more people will definitely be accepted in the spring.

CCLCMer--

yeah, the tuition is pretty outlandish, even compared to other similarly ranked privates i went to (pittsburgh, vanderbilt), but i think the education is worth it. we don't have to pay for Year 5 minus a small continuation fee, correct? oh, and is the financial aid as good as people say it is? i'm getting financial aid for my current undergrad institution which costs ~$50k/yr, so I am going to assume I will have some sort of financial need, which if I recall correctly, CCLCM first covers with grants before resorting to loans.

also, about how many people end up doing a dual degree? the curriculum is 5-years built in, which seems to give enough time to complete one. do extra classes for the masters programs end up at the Case campus? also, what do you think about this whole CCLCM splitting from Case and joining with Columbia thing?

thanks!

great questions, I'm interested in knowing as well.

CCLCM is one of my top choices too. I am very into research, and CCLCM integrates so many facets of research training in the medical curriculum. Great school! thumbup:

 They should limit all people to one or two questions per post max. Ok, I will try to answer everything but if I leave something out, just ask again.

Year 5: right, you pay a continuation fee, not tuition. You also get a research stipend from the school like you're a grad student. Most if not all of us are applying for outside funding. I think like thirty people applied for funding this year. Previous CCLCM students have been very successful at getting Howard Hughes and other prestigious medical student fellowships.

Financial aid: on average, people pay about half tuition. Of course, some people get very little in grants, and others get Dean's Scholarships that cover tuition, fees, and living expenses (like an MD/PhD program would do). Most people are somewhere in between. CCLCM has its own institutional aid that is separate from Case, so you can't judge what you'll get here from what you get there even though our fees and tuition are identical. Like you said, CCLCM gives grants first before loans. If you come for second look, you will get your financial aid package then. If it's still not going to be enough to cover you, talk to Liz Myers in the financial aid office.

Dual degrees: it varies by class. My class has probably the fewest people getting dual degrees, maybe like 1/4 to 1/3 of us. Other classes have most of the students getting MS degrees. I'm one of the people getting an MS, so if you're interested in doing that, I can tell you more about it. (I'm doing the Clinical Trials MS). Where classes are depends on the program. For my program, all of my classes are at the Clinic. If you do something like BME, you'll have to go over to Case, but it's not very far away from here. You could walk there in about 15 minutes.

CCLCM splitting: no idea what to say to that one. The dean spoke to us about it after it came up in the paper several months ago, and told us that nothing had been decided yet. There's been no further word about it since. I've just been going about my business and not thinking much about it.

As of recent, Lerner is still in active talks with Columbia about this. Historically, there is a rocky relationship between Case and CC. A lot of it has to do with the fact that CC and Case's University Hospitals are both outstanding hospitals that both dominate the cleveland area, but are a block away from each other and that only amplifies the already huge financial competition for patients and grants, among other reasons. As far as Columbia wanting Lerner, it may have something to do with the fact that Harvard has its MIT research program and Columbia wants something similar as they are competitors in their own right.

Either way, I wouldn't worry about it. If it switches affiliation to columbia, it's an even bigger name and there are certainly no doubts that the program won't suffer any. If it stays with case, the relationship will have grown even stronger. Either way it is still Lerner and that program will only get better regardless of what happens.

thanks for answering all my questions cclcmer (sorry there were so many...). if you dont mind one more question, whats the idea behind seminars? when i interviewed at Case, my interviewer told me that they were CCLCM's way of "lectures" without actually calling them that (he was trying to convince me that the UP and CP were exactly the same minus the physical location)

has anyone who was called last week gotten their acceptance package yet? i live like 20 miles away but still nothing in the mail. i guess i might have to wait until after Christmas after all 😛

happy holidays everyone!

No problem, I don't mind answering your questions. 😉

Just so you know, "lecture" is like a four-letter word here. 😛 Seminars are supposed to complement the PBL cases. Some of them do wind up being pretty lecturey, but most of them are a lot more interactive than a lecture would be, especially if the faculty break us up into groups of 16 or 8 instead of one big group of 32. I think the main difference is that since this program is so small, there's no hiding in the back of the auditorium. That being said, there are definitely some seminar leaders who are infamous for being non-interactive and well, yeah, giving lectures.

As far as the similarities between our program and the UP, I think your interviewer is somewhat right. But the reason for that is because the UP is moving more toward having a curriculum like ours. For example, they now have portfolios, a research thesis requirement, early clinics, small groups, etc. Even with the increased overlap, I wouldn't say that the programs are "exactly the same," though. This program is intended to train people to be physician scientists. It is kind of a medical school/graduate school hybrid. We are required to do a minimum of a year and a half of research time as opposed to four months required for the UP. The UP also seems to have a bigger emphasis on public health in their curriculum than we do. During our first summer, that's what they were doing while we did our basic science research rotation. I think that although there is some overlap in the students that apply to and are accepted to each program, they really do cater to people with separate goals and they are not completely looking for the same kind of students. That's why it's fairly common for people to be accepted to one and not the other.

For those of you who are accepted to both and wondering what to do, don't feel pressured to decide anything right now. Come to the second look weekend. You'll get another two-in-one because the second looks for both programs are back-to-back. Visit Cleveland again, meet your future classmates, think about whether you feel more comfortable in a class of 32 or 145. Consider whether you really want to take a fifth year to do research. See what your financial aid packages are like. And I know it's easy for me to say, but seriously, don't agonize over the decision too much. I honestly think that if you are choosing between CCLCM and the UP, you can't possibly make a bad choice.

No real important reason to post...besides to say I finally had my interview at CCLCM yesterday, and it was absolutely amazing!!!! The facilities are very impressive, the students were great, and everything felt so professional...definitely the type of place that I must say, no matter what happens, I felt kind of honored to interview there!! Goodluck to all the other hopefuls out there...I know I'll be waiting not so patiently to hear something🙂

Glad that you enjoyed your interview day. Good luck!

not to be super neurotic (i just got a PM about this from someone else), but has anyone who was called last week gotten their acceptance letter via snail mail yet?

i'm just afraid mine got lost in the mail and i'm going to miss the 2-week deadline (if there is one). psychotropic? chinny? someone?

hope your holidays are a blast! 🙂

haha i believe i got the same PM

anyway, i'm away from my listed address for break (out of the country), so I won't know if I get the letter until I get back to school, around the 7th

I called them about it and they said it should be fine; if by the time i get the letter, the date has gone by then they said to just call them.

i'd think, though, that they would take another few days or week or so to put together the letters and send them out. normally there'd be an additional week or so for mailing time, but its probably slowed down b/c of the holidays. plus its only been 9 days since the 18th, including a weekend and christmas, etc. and, considering that it is holiday season, they probably gave us until some time in january to return the letters.

so basically, the point is, keep having a blast over break and don't worry about it. if, in another week or so you still haven't gotten it, maybe give them a call. i'll let you know if i've gotten the letter or not once i'm back in the country! happy holidays!

got the letter today, postmarked 12/24. 🙂🙂 the return deadline is 1/15, so that gives us another 2+ weeks.

thanks chinny! happy holidays everyone!

thanks for the info starlight! good to know i have some time to get the letter back.

enjoy the rest of break!

Don't worry, they won't rescind anyone's acceptance if you're out of town and you don't get the letter back by the deadline. Like chinny said, just call the admissions office if you think you'll have a problem getting the letter back on time for whatever reason. This is the advantage of CCLCM being such a small school--everyone in admissions knows who you are, and they will work with you. Congrats again, everyone.

Has anyone discussed at the last adcom meeting gotten their hold letters yet? I'm still waiting to hear... :scared:

Has their tuition more than doubled since it opened? When I interviewed (for the 1st class) it was ~$20k.

No. That $20,000 you're remembering is the average tuition that CCLCM students pay after grants, which is half tuition. The total tuition was close to $40,000 even in 2004.

So what is the typical out of pocket expense, per year, now?

So what is the typical out of pocket expense, per year, now?

Clearly wait for CCLCMER's response since she knows what is really going on there...but what I understand was that is the typical tuition cost after financial aid...but you still have to factor in the other expenses...like cost of living etc...so the total out of pocket is still probably in the 40K range...the financial aid helps so that the total cost is more in the public school range rather than the 60K or so it would be otherwise...

It varies a lot. Some people pay almost full price, and some people pay nothing, not even for living expenses (they get stipends). The average is $20,000 for tuition, plus cost of living expenses. But living expenses vary too, even if you go exactly by the school's budget. First and second year, everyone gets paid $3000 over the summer for research, so you can use that toward your living expenses. Third year you don't get that extra money unless you're doing your research year, so living expenses go up. During the research year, living expenses are covered with a stipend.

Right, tuition doesn't include living expenses. So if you got $20,000 in grants, you'd still pay $20,000 for tuition plus you'd need to come up with about $20,000 for living expenses (according to the school budget).

soooo
does anyone who sent back their acceptance letter to hold a spot know how long it took?

my letter to case got there in 2 days, but the letter to cclcm is still not there after 1.5 weeks (i called and they said to check back again later in the week). does cleveland clinic have a complex mail routing system that makes it take a while or something?

Has anyone discussed at the last adcom meeting gotten their hold letters yet? I'm still waiting to hear... :scared:

I interviewed in December, supposedly before the December adcom meeting. I still haven't received any response. I thought that meant I was on hold (or worse?), but maybe my file just hasn't been discussed yet?

Did everyone who's been put on hold receive a letter in the mail?

errr...i sent mine in over a week ago and also sent it certified mail, meaning it got stamped by someone in the CCF mailing area. however, i never checked to see if it actually got to the admissions office. who did you speak to on the phone?

this happened to me too, and i just assumed i got put on hold, though i never got the letter in the mail. then i got accepted with the batch at the next adcom mtg, so don't give up! :luck:

hey thanks for the info, starlight

i guess since it got to ccf it should eventually make its way to admissions. I think the internal mail routing is what takes the longest. I sent my letter on 1/7 and it got there yesterday, 1/17. Not too long, but long in relation to my case letter which took 1/8 to 1/10 (updated on iapply).

I was just being slightly paranoid, but I def. want to secure such an awesome opportunity.

Not sure who I spoke with on the phone today. The first time i called I spoke with Melissa.

I just found out recently that I have to miss my Honors Convocation ceremony to come to Case second look (i think cclcm's second look is right after or before or something, right?) booo! but I'll still be there.

Yes, our second look is the same weekend as Case's. They do them back to back so you can come to both if you get accepted to both programs. Sorry to hear about you missing your convocation, but the second look weekend is really fun. You'll have a great time and this time you won't have to pay for it. 😉

It was probably Andrea that you spoke to. Today was Melissa's last day and this was Angela's first week, so things have been kind of hectic in the admissions office. For the people waiting from December and early Jan, the adcomm met yesterday, so you should be hearing something soon. Good luck!

Not sure what to say about the mail taking so long. I guess just call or email and double check if you're not sure whether it got there.

eeek :scared: I'm totally going to be holding my breath for the next week or two, heh. Thanks for the update!!

am going to withdraw my app (have intvw for 2/7) hope it helps someone interested in interviewing here---sounds like an AWESOME program!

It's going to be at least another week or two before anyone hears. Hang in there, I hope you get good news. :luck:

Congrats to you on Mayo, that's awesome.

thanks so much cclmer!! and thanks for all your helpful input throughout this process about cclm-- it really is an awesome program and everyone that goes there that ive talked to is amazing!

errr...does anyone know anything about financial aid? i pretty much tossed all my interview-day packets into a corner afterwards and looking at the cclcm site kind of confused me. if i'm applying for need-based financial aid, exactly what do i have to submit and by when? where can i get a hold of the Case Financial Aid form, which apparently is necessary?

CCLCMer??

contact Liz Myers in the admissions/financial aid office

Hey Starlight

its a good thing you asked about this because i just assumed we would get something in the mail before we had to worry about it. Since you asked, I decided to look into it.

After looking around the site for a bit, I found that if you mouse-over the financial aid menu option on the cclcm website, the last option that comes up is "incoming student's financial aid packet" I think that will have all the info you need.

Alternatively, here's the link
http://www.clevelandclinic.org/cclcm/docs/fa_incoming.pdf

The document is dated 1/22/2008, so we may yet be getting it in the mail.

Hi starlight,

I think chinny is right that the forms should be coming to you in the mail soon. I'm trying to remember when I got mine two years ago, but I'm really not the best judge since I was a January interviewee. I think my forms came with my acceptance package in early February. They're going to have to send the forms out to you guys soon though because they will give out your financial aid packages at the second look weekend. If you're still not sure what to do after looking through the pdf chinny posted, then definitely call Liz like JDW said. You can also talk to her at the second look, particularly if you need your award to be adjusted.

Got the call from Dr. Franco yesterday!!! Very very excited!!! I also got into Case, so it's going to be a pretty tough decision to make. I hope second look will give me a better idea of where to go.

Congrats!! When did you interview?

I guess this means that A. I didn't get in, or B. I wasn't reviewed at the last meeting?

Yes Congrats!!! So I guess this means they are starting to contact some people....custard I'm in the same boat as you....hopefully we hear something good soon!!!

Congrats! I'll be making the same difficult decision as well.

congrats serendipity!!
i'm looking to get more info to make a good decision too, though i'm very heavily leaning towards cclcm. so i'll see you at the second look!

good luck to those still waiting to hear!

When did you guys interview and when did you get the call that meant you were in?

yay financial aid email came today. 👍👍👍

everyone the email was sent to was visible and there were 45 people already on the list. looks like they started overaccepting this year?

yeah just saw the email a little while ago. I couldn't believe how many people were on the list either.

I think most schools send out 2x as many acceptances as spots though. I thought cclcm would be different because of its small size.

There were 2 other people from my interview day there!

To custard: I interviewed early december and found out mid december. Good luck!

yeah, i was really surprised too. i recognized three names on there as well--one from the CCLCM interview day, one from Case's (this person must have interviewed at the two schools on non-consecutive days), and one who i go to school with.

good luck to everyone waiting to hear. :luck::luck:

You interviewed in late Dec., right? So you should have been reviewed already then.

Congrats! Definitely do come to both second looks, it's a lot of fun.

Congrats! I'll be making the same difficult decision as well.
Congrats to you too. 🙂

I don't know exactly how many people have been accepted, but they don't overaccept much for the exact reason you were saying.

For anyone who interviewed in mid-Jan, the next adcomm meeting is this Thursday. Good luck!

Yep, I have been reviewed and it doesn't look good... was told a letter has been mailed to me 🙁 🙁 🙁🙁🙁🙁🙁🙁🙁🙁

Have they been sending rejections already or is it just hold notices right now?

When will people on hold get reviewed again?

Why are people getting put on hold if so many have been accepted already? Does this mean that this year not many people on hold will be accepted?

Haha yeah custard I'm assuming the same thing seeing as how I too interviewed in Dec. and have heard nothing so far...wish they would just hurry up and give me the letter....but yeah, judging from the numbers we are seeing, unless a lot of people turn down CCLCM (can't really imagine why), there shouldn't be much hold movement....aka, my forthcoming hold=rejection...oh wellllll....still a great school!!
