CCOM Class of 2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I just wanted to say hi and congratulate everyone going to CCOM next fall. I'm fairly certain (95%) I'll be there with you and I look forward to meeting everyone!

And after reading some banter about big ten schools, I thought I should end the debate by saying it's pretty clear Penn State is the best big ten school!

PSU can suck on it. Their med school waitlisted me and im still bitter.

BIG 10 Tournament Champs!

Good thing (for UW) the Iowa Hawkeyes dont have a hockey team

Its a sad day when you have to resort to bragging about hockey.

In all seriousness, Im glad to see the Big 10 being represented at MWU. We have great undergrad institutions!
👍

Hockey is as legitimate as any collegiate sport, and although it is not as popular as basketball or football nationally, it could be the most popular in our state since our football and basketball teams stunk until recently. Perhaps it is not as popular in Ohio, but I remember going to the game this year where we played you guys, so you must have some people that follow it there. Anyways, I was just commenting that it was pretty cool for the big ten that the mens and womens champions came out of the same conference and same school.

Im sure we have a few people that follow OSU hockey. But the majority of us don't care; especially since 90% of the team is from Canada.

all the sports talk is making less excited to come here. 😉 hope you boys play as much as you talk about it. i'd rather be actively playing a sport (in other words, not video game sports -- all others i'm ok with though).

i liked it better when it was about partying.

I RSVPd to the "meet and greet" next week. Hopefully they have beer. Who else is going?

I think we have:

too far for me.

NJ huh. If you are from Wayne, we will get along. Otherwise, good luck.

I've gotta be out of town on April 20th, so I won't be able to get down there for the Meet & Greet. Would you guys mind posting after you go to let me know what I missed?

I'm also curious of where in NJ m_cricket is from...I lived in Jersey for a year and have relatives scattered all over the state.

I'm also curious of where in NJ m_cricket is from...I lived in Jersey for a year and a half, have relatives scattered all over the state (parents grew up there -- my dad's a Rutgers alum) and I used to work summers on LBI at my family's restaurant.

i'm from central jersey. i graduated from rutgers last year and live in the town next to it. east brunswick, if you're familiar with the rutgers/new brunswick area.

I just watched a tornado tear through downtown Iowa City from the 5th floor of a university building. Most powerful thing I have ever seen. Just an interesting tidbit of info for all of you.

Yeah, those look nasty- We got a bunch of golf ball to tennis ball sized hail from that storm but nothing as bad as in Iowa-

Yup, I'll be there.

Hi all,
I am also going to be attending school with you all in the fall (yay!) but I'm trying to figure out a few things first, so I thought I would bounce some ideas off you all.

First off, is anyone else going to be moving an entire apartment? And if so, what moving company or group do you plan to use? U-Haul, one of those containers that you pack yourself and someone moves for you, or a full service moving Co.? I am trying to decide and I'd like to have other's suggestions!

Also, I'm looking to rent a townhouse or condo, approx 2 bedrooms with a real garage (like, with a door that no one else is using, so not a parking garage) and maybe a yard. Does anyone have any suggestions of where I could look on the internet or call to find a place such as this?

Thanks so much!!

How was the meet and greet thing?

It was pretty cool....met a bunch of people who will be in our class. Everyone seemed really nice. We also talked to some current M1's who were there, some alumni, and Dean Nichols.

I got the chance to talk with some alumni; they all seemed very successful. I thought it was great that the dean actually took the time to meet and chat with all the students. Also, our classmates seem to be pretty ambitious and ready to begin. I think we have a great class!... based on the 10/170 people I met.
👍

I used UHaul to move down to St. Louis this past year and they were pretty friednly and modestly priced. I'd say use them, rathe than a full service moving company, which usually cost between $1,000-2,000 depending on the distance of course. The bad thing about a UHaul trailer is that you have to drive slower (i think 55 mph), so plan on the time lag. hope that helps!

Hey guys...welcome to the CCOm family...dont listen to buckeye, he just runs his mouth. Not all of us are that mean, most of us are easy going and accepting of others!

Anyway in all seriousness congratulations on your acceptance and enjoy your summer!!!

One more thing...If anyone is interested in a one bedroom apt. i scored one about 1.2 miles from campus in an independent building. Its a large one bedroom that I rent for $700 and that includes my hot water. I am moving downtown in the middle of may and my lease is up in July if anyone is interested!

Ciao

Incoming people, I strongly suggest you not listen to individuals that have had bilateral bunion surgery.

Thanks.

The side-effects of bunion surgery are quite benign compared to those of "roids"

What other feedback do people have about the Meet & Greet?

Would any of you current CCOM students mind PMing me contact info for Dr. Terreberry? I can't seem to access the faculty directory yet, and I'd like to get in touch with him before getting down there this fall. Thanks so much.

Also, what other feedback do people have about the Meet & Greet. Just the few responses I read really made me wish I could have been there. Any good stories or conversations people had with faculty/alum/current students?

One of the current third year students was saying how respected CCOM was in the chicago medical community. She said she didnt realize it until she began her rotations. I heard this from a lot of the alumni too.

Hey, guys. Can anyone suggest some good apts around school? Thanks a lot. Also, I am looking for a female roommate, if anyone is interested, PM me please! thanks.

Can someone please give us the story on "The Pines" apts....how do they compare to places like yorktown II and the other off-campus places??

Are they super old/run down? Too small? 👍 👍 or 👎 👎 or 👍 👎 ??

It would be great if anyone could share some info on other apartment buildings in the area. Here are the places I have heard students live...anyone know anything about these places? THANK YOU! ~Kim

1. Yorktown II
2. Cityview at the Highlands
3. International Village
4. Versailles
5. AMLI at DAnada Farms ?

Hey you current CCOMers, Im comming up to Chicago on Friday to sign my lease. I am also going to drop by the school and check out some of the research posters at "Research Day". Am I going to run into any problems with security when I am trying to get on campus or will they let me in? They seemed pretty hardcore last time I was there.

Hi Kim, I looked at single apartments for the following...
---I am living at Versailles next year. Its very nice. My rent will be 880 but they raised it to 1045 the day after I signed up. You have to pay your electric but heat and air is produced by their systems so they said the bill is between 40-60/month. It is a 10 min drive to campus.
---International village was by far the nicest place I looked at. 10-15 min drive to campus and 925/month. They had marble counter tops (if you are into that), extra storage nearby for extra belongings, a nice clubhouse (you would probably never use it). The apartments were very well designed and well laid out. They payed heat and water or something like that.
---Yorktown II was my second choice.. Seemed to be a lot of CCOMers that lived there. My problem was that they woudlnt hold a place for me. They told me to start calling in June to see if there were any openings. The nice thing is that it is very very close to campus.. 5 minutes tops. you could even ride a bike fairly quickly.
I believe that i visited the highlands apartments if they are the ones in wheaton.... they were too far from campus for me. Probably a 20 minute drive. They were alright apartments, but i wanted to be closer.

Try going here

click on lombard and wheaton and it should bring up those apartments you asked about...
versailles is not on there but their website is http://www.versaillesatoakbrook.com/

PM me if you have any more specific questions

Not really. Your MCAT is going to hurt you.

I was accepted to CCOM with a 23Q MCAT. They don't only look at MCAT. I had 3.71 science and 3.74 overall, I had lots of research under my belt and club participation as well as volunteer and work experience in the medical field. So if you have the rest of you application to back you up, then you should be fine. CCOM is looking for people who are able to "doctor" rather those who can just ace tests, so they like to see lots of "out of school" experience. GOOD LUCK!

I'm proud to annoucne that im the 50th person with a housing question.

I just got my housing app and they are sticking me in a single w/private bath dorm.

I don't think i can do the dorm thing after having my house for 2 years. Anyone still looking for a roommate? Im gonna call around now and look for apartments. I am from about 20 minutes from CCOM, so i will be able to look at places starting next monday.

If still need a roommate just PM me.

Dont worry about your mcat!!! I know lots of people with a similar mcat score...your gpa shows that you are a strong student and your interview will determine whether you are a good match or not. Your mcat will not likely be the deciding factor. Keep your chin up and good luck!

we got an offer in the mail. all you had to do is write your address on it, pick a size, and send it back.

i would have to say they are not the softest pair of scrubs that i have.

Hi all,

I haven't seen these places myself, but I have heard many comments about them. Pines Apartments are 500 sq. feet consisted of a living space, a bedroom, and a small kitchen. I hear that it is relatively old when compared with other dorms on campus...some describe it as small and dusty. Currently, there is a construction for a new gym, so I speculate that it will be more dusty later in the year. For those of you not familiar with Downers Grove, I am a city kid so when compared with innercity Chicago, CCOM is in a high-class neighborhood. There are big houses (for some, I would call them mansions) gigantic yard, ponds, fountains...you get the drill. So my guess is that apartments such as city view and york town II will be much better in terms of quality (much bigger space and better maintenance, perhaps). There is a disadvantage, however; these apartments will be a lot more expensive, esp. if you desire one bedroom. In comparison, pines apts. cost only $2200 per quarter. Unless, you share an 2-3 bedrm apartment, I think that paying about $800 per month (maybe more) is the norm. My opinion is based on what other students had informed me on campus, so don't take it verbatim. I hope that helps.
