CCOM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Not to sound like a jerk or anything, but if you don't know why you want to go to a school, you probably shouldn't apply/attend there. For me, I looked through the school's website and found things that fit with my personality whether that was research opportunities, clubs on campus, clinical opportunities, lecture sizes, etc. Just think about what YOU really want in a school and see if CCOM (or any other school for that matter) matches those needs. This should be the easiest question for your secondaries. Just sit down and take a minute to think about yourself and what you need and I'm sure you'll come across a great answer 🙂 Good luck and I hope the secondary experience goes well! That is, if anybody's experience ever goes well with secondaries... haha

Rejected pre-interview...ouch, i wonder what rubbed them the wrong way.....considering i got interviews and acceptances at 2 other schools. This process is random

I agree and disagree. I find that the process is less random for the top notch candidates. Ones with high MCATs, high GPAs, great LORs & EC's and tons of patient/clinical interaction and exposure and some research thrown in for good measure. They usually get invitations to interview at many schools (though, it does depend how ambitious they are) and are rarely rejected pre-interview. This process is pretty random though for the majority of us who may be outstanding with some parts of our app and lacking in others. This is because it is down to the individual school - what one school is willing to overlook vs what another school is willing to overlook can differ greatly. Not to mention taking into account all other factors like region/state of residence. So just because you have been accepted elsewhere, doesn't mean it's crazy talk that you weren't even considered for an interview somewhere else. Unless you are a stellar applicant, in which case, I would be confused. I'm not saying this is what you meant to come across, btw. Just stating how I feel about this process.

I disagree. I think there is an element of randomness. Not everything is random, but who reads your app, whether they are interested/not interested in what you have to say/contribute, whether you from a state they grew up in (could play a role, because it adds familiarity, maybe even a sense of camaraderie, etc.), etc. etc. I am not saying these elements on their own will make or break you, but with so many qualified applicants they could choose on a coin toss if they wanted to.

Well I wonder if we will hear any news this week. I sit here in my hotel in South Carolina awaiting extraction from the site of my final scheduled interview. After all has been said and done, CCOM is still my top choice.

I love reading your posts from hotels and airports across the country!! I hope your other interviews have gone well so far, and I also hope you hear good news from CCOM. It's still also my first choice school, but I've saved sooooo much money by canceling my other interviews. Money problems have made this a very unexpected blessing.

well i thought i was a fairly strong candidate with a 30 mcat and a 3.4 gpa, never read my LORs but i'm sure they're ok and my ECs aren't exceptional, but they couldn't have been that bad since i got other interviews.... which is why i brought it up. o well, I just hope there isn't something wrong with my application that could affect me at other schools. i didn't expect to get accepted to every school i applied to but i at least thought I would get an interview.

or it could have been an unfinished application from last year.....could that have played a role?

Hmm, i don't think an unfinished application from last year would have been an issue for this year. Have you tried calling them and asking why they passed you up?

I'm in the same situation and actually tried calling. They said they can't discuss any of that information and just gave me a laundry list of what they look for in applicants (good gpa, mcat, volunteering, shadowing, leadership experience, etc).

I got my rejection letter today. I have above average GPA MCAT and ECs so I honestly think I said something dumb in my secondary.
Thankfully I wasn't even going to attend the interview, I just want closure from the schools where I finished the secondary.

this is not the post i want to read prior to me getting a decision on whether i receive an interview or not..lower MCAT, higher GPA. Good EC's and research. Please God.

just to add to the randomness comment.. I got the rejection letter yesterday as well, above mcat and gpa, got an interview at the AZ campus which made it even a bit more confusing, but I did cancel the AZ interview a few weeks ago after getting into my top choice so it's all good!

I got voted off the island yesterday too by means of the dreaded letter...I thought I would have a good chance here too and liked the thought of living near chicago...oh well

Okay, I got voted off 2 islands and one of them post-interview today. Let's go CCOM, I wanna hear good news from you.

Has anyone checked MWUNet and tried out the Matriculation section to see if anything is available (and thus got accepted) yet?

Those of you that have received rejection letters post interview, what was the interview like? conversational, stressful, or great?

Haven't seen anything yet, just my AZCOM matriculation list. I usually come here first since I'm sure there will be a slew of "ACCEPTED!" posts as soon as CCOM starts updating people's portals, so I'll know when to check lol.

Haha, ironic that I just posted that because I just checked and am ACCEPTED!!! 😀 So happy!!

Wait... for AZCOM or CCOM?

lol CCOM! It has both the matriculation lists on there now. Last night it was not there and since it is like 8am in Chicago, I bet today is when they're starting to update the portals so I'm sure everyone else's will change soon too 🙂

Woahhhhhhhh!

My portal has an accepted students checklist with the ability to make my deposit payment..... OH MY GOSH I THINK I'M ACCEPTED!!!

Well the admissions lady says she thinks you should be able to check your status by now and see if you've been accepted. She also said the letters went out Tuesday morning. Wonder if mine will arrive today... I don't see anything in the portal so I'm probably in a category other than accepted.

Congrats PlayUltimate15!

Did you call just now? It could be like AZCOM, you never know. They told us a certain time when we would find out and some people's portals changed way before that which of course made the rest of us nervous.

Congrats to you as well! I've been dealing with a lot of tough family stuff lately so this feels like a dream. I guess now I have the blessing of deciding between the two schools which I considered in my top 2 all along: MSU-COM and CCOM. The major factor is whether to go home to michigan or stay near chicago.

Congrats PlayUltimate15!

Oh wow, great job on MSUCOM too! I withdrew my app to COM (long story), but it is a great school. I interviewed at their MD program a couple weeks ago and the campus/facility/etc is pretty nice, so we'll see if they are kind to me too come 10/15 or not 😀

I called at 8am. I'm sure there isn't any delay and I am in a status other than accepted at this point but I e-mailed the admissions office just on the off chance and also to see if I've been waitlisted.

Sorry bud =( I know how much you liked CCOM and that you also felt confident about the interview. I hope you're at least wait-listed.

ahhh ACCEPTED! now where am I gonna come up with the money to pay for it?

When did you finish the secondary? I'm waiting for a letter too.

ACCEPTED!!! My first one!!! Wow I'm actually going to be a physician. Congrats to everyone else - maybe we'll see each other next year!

Yep, I'm on the alternate list... lol... letter of intent here we go. I wonder what I said or did that got me on that damn thing. Anyway I interviewed at other places but this was my top choice.

I've been complete since July 1st but still haven't heard anything from these guys. Is this common? I wish they would just tell me if I was put on hold or something, but I don't get the concept of not updating at all.

Accepted! Just checked the portal after my Nova interview today as I sit in the airport and saw the list! Woo hoo! Congrats to everyone else who was accepted today! :highfive:

For those of you haven't heard or have been waitlisted - don't loose hope!

Well... I didn't have a very good interview there, so I guess I shouldn't be too sad to not see an acceptance status or any status. but still. bah.

edit: And now I am having a nervous freak out that I am not going to get in anywhere. arghhh CCOM :scared:

The fact that you had an interview so early shows you have a strong application so I doubt you need to freak out, I'm sure you'll get in somewhere!

Thanks. I think I just have the fear that I will go to all these interviews and get in nowhere.

Of your 11 interviews (I believe I counted correctly) I'm sure you will not only get in somewhere, but will have awesome choices. I imagine, come october 15, you'll be hearing good news. You must have solid stats and a great overall application to have been invited to interview at so many great schools. Good luck, but I have a feeling you won't need it =D.

Thanks. I think I just have the fear that I will go to all these interviews and get in nowhere.

congrats on all who have been accepted!!!

now take the rest of the year off before august rolls around....you will need it 🙂

waitlisted... i'm so heart-broken right now. no love from neither Midwesterns :cry::cry:

I wish I could do that, I have to finish this freaking masters program. I wish I could get a break from school lol.... at least I will have a light load of classes next semester (like 5 credits lol).

Thanks mommy2three! Unfortunately though, I can't really take the rest of the year off as I am still waiting to hear back from a handful of schools and won't really be able to make a final decision until hear from them as well as finish all my interviews to see what choices I have. CCOM is a great school but I feel that way about almost every single one I have interviewed at so far. It's making my decision for top choice very difficult and that darn Dec. 14th deposit deadline doesn't help... 🙁

I GOT ACCEPTED TOO!!! First school, but I loved it and I'm pretty sure this is where I'm going. Anyone else think they're going here for sure?? 😀

congrats on all who have been accepted!!!

This sounds like great advice...how is your year going mommy2three??

Accepted~! I am sooo happy! Oh, and there were 12 people at the 1st round of interview on 9/17! I wonder which ones out of the 12 will I be seeing again! But you all were so great and I'll be looking forward to seeing those of you who choose to attend at CCOM!

Good luck to the ones who are currently applying or waiting on a decision! CCOM is a great school and I had a great time interviewing there! I didn't get asked any ethical question or hypothetical question. It was a friendly conversation b/t the four of us, with the goal of getting to know me better!

Have a great weekend! 😀

hopefully you will not be in the same boat 🙂

best wishes in finishing your masters!!! :luck:

I was in the third group of interviews, the group on tuesday the 21st. haha umm short guy from seattle? i was really impressed at how many people stopped by to say hi and wish us good luck in the interview. seems like ccom has a really good sense of community 🙂

Rockclimbersher I was also one of the 12 interviewed on 9/17. I just got my acceptance letter as well exciting stuff! This was my number one choice so I'll be seeing you there as well. Good luck to everybody else that is still waiting on your answer I wish everyone the best!
