-1 year working as volunteer Director of Operations for non-profit supporting the research and outreach for a rare disease
-1 year working as a support group facilitator within a women's prison, domestic violence
-traveled to volunteer for Remote Area Medical in US twice

Thoughts on chances of getting into mid-tier MD or DO Schools? Should I get some sort of certification in the medical field prior to applying?

You are competitive for all DO schools so apply to at least 8 (include MSUCOM) and you should receive several interviews. For MD schools your best chances are most of your Michigan schools- Central Michigan, Michigan State, Wayne State, Oakland Beaumont and Western Michigan. Your lack of shadowing and clinical volunteering hours will hurt your chances for interviews. When are you planning on applying?
