Chad says when you number a compound, you count the longest chain. Then you start counting from the side with the most substituents (lowest numbered)?

With Chad's logic, the answer would be "B" as shown, but DAT BC (and many other sources) say that you pick the highest priority substituent when picking what side to count from...

OH vs Cl

OH gets lowest #substituent

Certain substituents trump others.
 
You may want to review Chad's video. The idea that you want the lowest substituents holds true for alkyl, halide, and ether substituents but the rest want priority in naming (if I remember correctly).
 
i have written down:
COOH Derivatives> Aldehydes > Ketones > Alcohols > Amines > Alkynes/Alkenes in priority.

So when its just your average Br, Cl halide and ethyl/methyl groups, you do what I did?

When an alcohol comes up it takes immediate priority?

Ah i think my confusion is gone now.
