You will get in somewhere. It's hard for me to say for those higher tier schools but I think you have a shot.

Hi all,

CA resident and ORM.
cGPA: 3.67
sGPA: 3.64
MCAT: 32L (12 PS/8 VR/12 BS)

Hoping my favorite Catalystik can chime in and answer some of my questions in this long post!🙂
Given my stats and ECs, how broadly should i apply and what are my chances at some of the california schools -- USC UCI UCLA? Also curious about how competitive I would be for UMiami and NYU. If some of the experts here can help me formulate list of schools to apply to, that would be great!

  • 2 years of neuroscience research in cell bio lab - 1 publication
  • 2 years of clinical research - 1 abstract and poster presentation @ acg conference
  • Collected and abstracted medical data for multiple studies in the hepatology department over the past two years
  • 100 hours volunteer ER 3 years ago at local hospital
  • Current job (jan 2011 - present) as a clinical research coordinator @ stanford university
medical center - manage patients in Hep B and Hep C phase 2 and phase 3 clinical trials during all monitor visits and manage budget, contract, and local IRB for all clinical trials in my division/department.

I'm still working in this position, so patient experience hours roughly upwards of 1000 hours and counting.
  • I also screen/recruit various patients to different studies (that are not clinical trials), so i am usually in the room with the patients during their visit then afterwards inform and consent them when the physician leaves -- so shadowing experience of GI/Hepatologists probably upwards of 200 hours

  • various non-medical ECs - habitat restoration, gen chem tutor, elementary school class mentor, science project mentor, and some church volunteer work

i'm sure i left some things out, but didnt want to be too long.

***Sidenote - somewhat a little scared of my L score on writing. I knew the writing section was getting removed in 2013 and had been told it was meaningless. So this time around I didn't pay much attention to the writing section and didnt give full effort, but still am somewhat surprised by my score of an L.

My writing is usually pretty solid and I've always done well in my college english/writing courses. Just wanted to know if an L would be an issue at all to when schools decide interview invite, as i'm sure my personal statement and supplemental essays are pretty solid as well. If anyone can reassure me, i'd greatly appreciate it.

Many thanks in advance to everyone with helpful advice!!
To help me appreciate the bigger picture:

How many times have you applied? What feedback did you get on how to improve your application? If you could include your old list, that would be nice.
How many times have you taken the MCAT?
Could you give times and total hours of nonmedical community service? (You can delete it later if it's too identifying.)
How substantive were your leadership roles before becoming a research coordinator?
Remind me of all your non-GI formal shadowing types and hours.
Do you have updated LORs in the bag?
Any legal issues/IAs of concern?

-this is actually going to be the first time i apply.
-i've taken the MCAT only twice. 26N first time in 2011, was unhappy retook and got 32L this past september.
-non--med community service ~100-120hours
-Im unsure as for substantial leadership roles prior to being the lead coordinator the past 2 yrs.
I was captain of IM basketball for 3 years? I also did train all the new research assistants prior to leaving the neuro lab

-non-GI shadowing: i've probably say around 25hours or so while i was volunteering in the ER i was given an opportunity to follow some of the ER physicians around
-LOR: PI neurosci, PI clinical research (MD), 2 physicians, 1 sci prof, 1 non-sci prof

-no legal issues or things of that nature

thanks so much

As we discussed your ECs and your current interview offers from Tulane and NYMC two years ago, I am confused. I think I got played.

that was actually posted on my best friend behalf; and i just deleted that original post to prevent further confusion-- he was 3.65/33R we had bascailly done many things together and had similar app profile (at the time) so i posted for him to get an idea where i stood since @ that time i was still premcat taken. he did mission trips and had a job through college but it was still pretty similar overall.

Anyways, I decided to take a few years more off to improve ECs and do research while he matriculated NYMC.

edit: sorry for confusion catalysk. was debating even making new account to just post in chances thread
