I'm an MS-III considering path for the '05 match and I was wondering what chances I have for major university programs. I attend a carib school, have all US clinicals, and 250+ on step I. No research. With the increasing AMG interest in path, is there still a chance for a carib student like me to land a solid university program? Are the big programs giving any highly qualified IMG's interviews this year. Also, anyone have info about the Cali schools (UCI, USC, harbor UCLA etc.) for IMG's. Thanks.

Listen, last year only 50-60% of the slots were filled with AMGs. No increase this year or next year is going to fill them up 100%, and even after the IMGs and FMGs and let in, it still was only 90% full. Path is not Radiology or Ortho where 99% fill with AMGS. So you can absolutely do path with your marks somewhere in the US.


As far as Sourthern California goes that could be really really tough. Try rotating at a few of the UCs this coming summer/fall and maybe they will think you are a great guy and bring you aboard.

But it is too early to be even thinking about this yet. Wait until May to start contacting programs.

i don't think you will have any problem. your scores will get you lots of interviews at some really good programs....so don't fret AT ALL maaaan.

let's see what happens this year in the match....BUT either way, i think a 250+ will undoubtedly guarantee you some solid interviews next year (unless you mess up your personal statement or something kooky like that)

dude, with a 250 step score you will get a uni path program...somewhere. will you get JH or MG? No, but you will get a uni path program which will train you well. Keep in mind that a lower % of AMG's went into path last year than........psychiatry. Just aim for good to middle of the pack university programs and you will be fine.
Path is still one of the least competitive fields.

California might be tough just because parts of California are tough for anything.

Thanks for the encouragement. By major university I mean middle tier. I know MG and UPENN are out of reach, but I was hoping for a middle tier program, with good training and some research opportunities. At this point I'm gonna work on setting up a guest elective somewhere I might like to be. Thanks guys.
