I go to a mid-tier MD school and had some health issues that caused me to fail two classes M2 which required me to take a LOA and repeat the year.
Step 1: pass
5 pubs but none in anesthesia

Is there any chance of matching anesthesia if clinicals go well and 250+ Step 2? Or should I give up and focus on a less competitive specialty (psych, IM)? School admin is not giving me clear answers on what to expect.

If the LOA is really due to health issues and it's stated in your PS and Dean's letter (and not more serious issues like academics or professionalism), should have a decent chance if you do well on Step 2.
