What are the chances of getting off the waitlist at this time of the year? Are there stories of people declining their seats last minutes and before school starts up? Thanks.

Most schools have already asked for their deposit, so unless you're a stellar applicant and depending on residency and what school, you may have a small chance.
I've heard of some cases where people actually got accepted a few weeks before starting and even 1 week before starting.
