Chances thread… applying this year

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'd be wiling to bet you'll match. Not a lock by any means, but I think you have more than just a fighting chance as long as you're not too particular about location. "Apply broadly"

I know it's a crapshoot, but where are some places I shouldn't even bother applying?

Only saving grace to my app is that I literally do not care where I go-my Frieda list currently sits at about 114 and I haven't the slightest idea how to pare it down.

Really impossible for me to say unfortunately...I would try to stay away from some of the bigger names/more desirable locations. Still, realize that you may still get some number of interviews from your "reach" programs.

Going to post this again, bc it looks like it got skipped over....

Step1- 259
Step2ck- 279
Step2cs- pass
*4 research pubs (2 case reports, 1 presentation, 1 study) in low-mid level journals
*all Honors and As in third year
*several interesting work/volunteer experiences
*1 strong LOR from a good Brooklyn EM program (a second SLOR next month), and a strong IM letter from the Dept Chairman
School- SGU

I realize a lot of places simply will not take IMGs, but Im hoping that some will look past the school I went to and see a good candidate for EM. Chances? Any programs in New England that might look at an IMG?

Being an IMG is obviously the only weak part of your application. Unfortunately, some programs won't look at you at all because of this. Others will look past it and give you a shot. Your chances are best at programs that have accepted IMGs in the past. If you're committed to EM, you should apply to every program that currently has an IMG resident or had one within the last 3-5years. I would be proactive in contacting programs about your desire to be there if you have your eye on a program in particular. Regardless of your application, (even if you were an AMG), I think EVERYONE should consider worst case scenarios and have backup plans. Believe it or not, there are people with above average board scores that rank 7-8+ programs and don't match.

Isn't nearly everything going to be a "reach" for me? Heh.

By bigger names, do you mean places like UNC, Washington, OHSU, UNM, Colorado, Vanderbilt, Indiana, Cincy, Advocate, Cook, MMC, Christiana, UVA, UMass, U of Maryland, U of Az, Emory, UMich, Regions, Hennepin, Utah, UPenn, most of California and bits of New York?

I didn't think cook and advocate were that competitive, but i may be wrong. I also heard great things about the Washington program (met someone on the trail from there that LOVED it and the PD), but isn't that program super new? Most of the rest I imagine you don't stand much of a chance for an interview with 200-210. Sorry.

yes and no... the competitive places tend to be the places with big names (some of which you mentioned) as well as the places with locations that are desirable (some of which you mentioned).

it's impossible to make a top programs list - it's been done ad nauseum with it invariably turning into a "in n out is the best. nuff said" debate.

a lot of the names you listed on there will be reaches for you with the scores but all of them have their pros and cons.

if you are set on academic, look at some of the less desirable locations (non-coast, middle america/south). if you are open to smaller community programs, there are some places where you will get great training that you should definitely look at.

PM me if you have more questions

cook's had a good name for years but i think a lot of people are saying that advocate is the best in chicago now.

You're much more likely to get interviews at programs in your region...

By bigger names, do you mean places like UNC yes, probably not worth it

213/238/pass
US IMG was a RN for 2 years before med school.
In med school in Costa Rica graduate 12/2013, top 10% of my class
Great LORs but all of them from Costa Rican EM docs. Will get 1 LOR from US EM doc.
Have a list of about 70 programs with IMGs, planning on applying to prelim IM too! :scared:

I don't mean to be mean, but it'l be very difficult to crack into EM...even IMG's with 240-250s have a difficult time. I'm not sure if the prelim IM will really help much either, to be honest with you. Have you thought about pursuing another specialty?

No I haven't... But I guess I'll have to when the time comes. You don't think I'll get even 1 interview?

It'll be REALLY hard, especially if you don't have any US SLORs (standardized letters). I think you might get a couple if you apply to 70 IMG friendly programs...

Thanks for being honest...

Starting to get a little bit nervous as time runs out.

US grad from a CA medical school
Step 1: 248
step 2: pending
Pre-clincial: Mostly P/HP with a few H sprinkled in
Clinical: H medicine, H family, P in surgery, neuro, psych, peds, ob/gyn
Extracurricular: multiple leadership positions and research

CA born and bred, wouldn't mind staying, but it's not a must. Do I have a shot at any of the norcal programs (UCSF, stanford, fresno, etc?) Thanks guys 😕

Why would you possibly be nervous? Unless you absolutely bombed Step 2 (as in like barely passed... not a "I only got a 240+" type bomb), interview like total ****, or have horrific comments on your SLOR and are a douche I can't see ANY reason why you would even be remotely concerned about not matching, even to the programs you mentioned (esp. Fresno).
It's posts like these that kill me... do you really think you have "no shot"? I totally understand the people posting 210's Step 1 scores and/or that have some iffy marks in their app but it's kinda demeaning to those guys when people with nearly 250s are asking their "chances" as it comes across as begging for attention or neurotic... sorry, being honest.
I think the "chances" threads should be more for people who legitimately are marginal in their chances to match, not the people with the low end SDN supergunner scores who need an ego boost. Again, not trying to be rude, just being honest.

relax dude. even ppl with good scores are allowed to be neurotic.

plus, i think he/she was focusing the question on CA programs.

I'm perfectly relaxed, are you? As I stated... it's my feeling that posts like these from people that are not only competitive, but actually VERY competitive are a bit condescending to the thought of "do I stand a chance" which is why this thread was made. CA programs or not, with those scores there is not a program in the country that they won't get a serious look from. Plus, with them being from CA kinda negates the "getting into Cali" bias that people talk about so it would be much like a NY person asking if they could get into an NY program with those scores... kinda moot point.

for the record, fresno is definitely not northern california (and despite how someone else makes it sound, it is a very good program)... uc davis however is.

your stats are fine, though i guess i have to ask how did you h medicine and family and only pass the rest - does your school not high pass clinical?

So my turn I guess...

IMG from SGU (caribbean).

Step 1: 243
GPA- 3.84
Step 2: looks like it'll be 240's but hard to say, wish me luck:laugh:
Research: 3 unpublished papers because PI slacking on submitting them, guess I hitched my wagon to the wrong horse.
LOR's: I start my first rotation in august, hope to get a SLOE from the PD and then perhaps a second EM letter there. Hope to have my second SLOE roll in at the end of september from an other rotation. Completing 4 EM rotations in a row at SGU friendly programs.

PLanning to apply to every. single. program.

Thoughts??

im sure you could have just said that instead of launching into a diatribe about how offended you are. im pretty sure you just made him/her feel better. good job. 👍

Go to each program's website and see if any of the residents are IMGs. Apply to all those. Great application, but some schools just won't take IMGs. Focus hard on the ones that do. Make sure all your aways are ones with IMG residents currently or in the recent past.
