Is there any way to change USMLE step 2 release status through ERAS if we already designated that we authorize to release all new scores? I know ERAS states in bold red letters that there is no way to change this, but I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to circumvent this mandate.

If ERAS says u can't change it, then u prob can't.

You can't change it, but you can re-release your USMLE transcript via ERAS manually any time you want, and it's free. So there is nothing lost.

I was thinking about this before I received my Step II scores (I had designated that they release all new scores as well and was worried that maybe I hadn't done as well on STEP II). My conclusion was that it didn't really matter either way. Many programs are starting to require STEP II scores prior to rank so I would need to release them before then anyway, and most of the programs that are going to offer me interviews already have, so it's unlikely that a lower than desired STEP II score would cause me to get fewer interviews.

Luckily I ended up doing quite well on STEP II but even if I hadn't I think I still would have had to release those scores before match.

I'm not sure I understand this. Does this help my cause? If I am able to re-release my now presently unleased (and nonexistent) step 2 transcript at a later date, what does this actually do for me?

It doesn't help you now because you chose the other options (automatic release) which pretty much everyone who knows how ERAS works advises against.

You have 2 options at the beginning, automatic or manual score release. Manual score release means you get a chance to see your scores before programs do.

There are no implications for you now.

If you chose automatic release, your scores will be released as soon as they are available. No way to change that.

I know that UCSF does and at least one other EM program on the west coast mentioned it when I was interviewing there. My advisor mentioned it coming up in some sort of conference call between EM directors. So, I guess my N is pretty small here.

Doesn't help the op, but you can change it the other way when you decide to release scores. I selected not to release scores automatically. Each time I updated it to release specific scores, I was given the option to change my score release requests. Yeah, we were specifically warned that selecting to release automatically was one of things you couldn't undo.
