hey guys,
i'm a current drew/ucla student. i'll try to answer a few q's..🙂
as far as how med school is going for us...no matter what program youre in, youll get what you put in out of med school. from my experience this year, drew students have mostly been above the class average in all 3 of our block exams and are by far some of the most involved students in our class. if there's a health fair, drew students are there...an afterhours clinic, same deal. the drew group is very driven and unique.
as far as board preparations, since youre doing your first 2 years at geffen youll get the exact same opportunity to do well on step one as any other person. the ucla curriculum teaches to the boards for the most part, so i feel pretty confident that i'll be prepared.
geffen students don't even blink when you talk about drew. i dont know if its the same for other classes but if you think about it, it would be lame for them to look down on you...we're all in the same boat, and there's no time for petty trash talking between us. we're all good friends.
3rd and 4th years are still bound to change but as of right now i believe only 2 rotations (surgery and neuro?) are not being done at mlk. ucla-affiliated hospitals are picking up the drew students on those. and im sure you've heard this before, if anything were to happen to the drew program, ucla has spots guaranteed for us. its looking good though, there's improvements going on every day and people that are working very hard to make sure that this hospital is around for a long time.
waiting for the acceptance is hard...drew is kind of unpredictable. i waited over 3 months for my acceptance last year and i know theres people in my class that got their acceptance upto a few days before prime (our orientation in july). so keep up the hope!! if you're truly interested in the program, send in anything that will show you're right for drew, and if you get an interview, it is crucial that you back up your words with experiences of why you want to come here. the medical student interview weighs a lot, so dont blow it off. they take what the students think pretty seriously. i think i may have interviewed a few of you back on 2/11...maybe ill see you on 3/25 (the last big interview day). good luck!
