Wow, reading this thread makes me think that this process is even more variable than I first thought.

Congratulations! i interviewed on the same day as you, but still no movement on my end :scared: I just have to wait, torture myself by obsessing every hour, and wait. 🙁 But again, congratulations!

I was just interviewed yesterday and they said we would not find out until April, probably mid April. I really enjoyed it and would love to go as well.

For those of you who have gotten in, is there any set date when you have to accept or reject? Also, does anyone know anything about their waitlist? How many do they put on? how many get taken off and offered an acceptance?
Have you heard of them accepting more applicants that have applied numerous times before? or does it even matter?

You can PM me if you don't want to post this on the board.

Thanks ...... 😉
Hmmm - I thought that when I interviewed last week, they said they were ranking people on March 15th. Seems like that is a magical date for a lot of schools, are you sure you heard April? I just don't want to wait anymore! lol.

Royita, did you get accepted also? Congrats if you did!

Yeah, I just got an acceptance on Monday. I'm very excited about it!

i interviewed in afternoon... and i dont know if i am going to go there... still waiting to see all my options, but i did really love the school

Congrats Royita, are you thinking it as you top choice at this point?

Ocguy, where else are you considering/waiting to hear back from?

i'm deciding between upitt, cornell, usc, umich, ucsd... i know they all are really different, but there are things at each that i really like... anyone have any suggestions on why i should pick one over the other?

Congratulation guys!!! for your acceptances. I too interviewed on Feb 11 and i am praying for a phone call. I was told by some one that the interviews are designed in such a way that they only accept 3-4 out of the 30 people interviewed on a particular day. Well, you guys are really luck.

I'm in the same boat you are...

I called them recently and i was told it's too soon for decisions, but who knows

best of luck

sorry for the multiple posts...website kept saying network error...i didnt know my messages were getting through anyway...i agree, this process is quite unpredictable...what i heard from previous applicants is that they basically rank everything...they offer positions early to those at the top, and early rejections to those they know they really dont want to take...and for some of us who are in the middle, it's just a wait and see game until they fill the spots...

it's nice to know that there's some movement...those who have heard, good or bad, from Drew, please keep posting...it helps to hear of some updates...good luck to all and congratulations to those who got acceptances! :luck:

Do you plan on withdrawing ocguy? Or still thinking about it? Congrats on all your acceptances!

yep, they said we would find out in April. Who knows, they might rank in March but you might not find out until April. I don't want to wait either but if it is a good outcome it will make it all worth it.

i really liked the school, and i really see myself there... i just am waiting for financial aid packages and second looks... does drew have a second look... i'd really like to meet those who got in

any other 2/11 interviewees hear anything?

I'm waiting...this process is pretty stressful dont ya think?

I am a 2/21 interviewee, but I think the rumor I heard was that all the pre 2/28ers will be reviewed at the same time(?). I vow to post my result as soon as I know so we all know to check our mailboxes.

Hi Everyone,
(Mimi, I found your post in allopathic posts, thanks for writing!). I am hoping to hear from current med students in to give their opinion on how the school is working for them.
I interviewed Dec 21 and got accepted 2/27. I got a nice phone call from the dean of admissions. The interviews with the student and doctor were so easygoing and relaxed.
Does any one know about a second look day? Best of luck to all those who want to get accepted!

Same here, 2/11 interview, no news yet. Something tells me to await skinny envelope and stop hoping. This is the only CA school that interviewed me.

I just moved this from Allopathic to include everyone in pre-allo. Also I have tried finding current Drew students but I'm pretty sure there are no SDNers.

Hi I was accepted to the UCLA/Drew program. I think it sounds like a great program except I just want to hear what people think about it, including Geffen UCLA students who know about it from an outsider's viewpoint. I know Drew has had money problems but as long as I can have the necessary rotations during 3/4 year and get into a great residency I don't mind. I just want to make sure being a part of Drew would not hurt my chances for getting the kind of residencies that regular UCLA students get. Because Drew is about working with the underserved, which I am thrilled with, I do not want it to limit my options for what kind of doc I end up being. Thanks!

First off, congrats Carina!

I haven't heard of money problems at all...I thought they were fine with that. I think its more on accreditation with their residencies that they are having difficulties with (but definitely working on), and the usual difficulties with running a county hospital that serves mostly underserved populations. You will be fine as far as doing your rotations, for example your surgery rotation would be at UCLA-Harbor (county) instead of at King/Drew. You diploma is from both UCLA Geffen and Drew, and I know for a fact that Drew/Geffen students are indistinguishable (when I interviewed at both). I do not think it would hurt what kind of doctor that you end up being, as you would be compared with Geffen students during your first two years, and graded at Harbor just like the Geffen students would be. I think they could gauge you well compared to Geffen (much larger pool then 24).

I found this PDF on the Drew site for Match 2004 (page 5):

http://www.cdrewu.edu/com2002/dean/...Spring_2004.pdf

Looks good to me! Matches mostly in California, of course mostly in Primary Care (which is what one would expect), but still matches in Opthalmology, radiology-diagnositc, and ER.

Where else are you considering Carina (if you are)?

Elastase

Hey Elastase!
Thanks so much for all the info. You have been very helpful. Thank you for sending that link to the newsletter too.
I am considering Georgetown (lots of opportunities to work with underserved) but of course it's very expensive. Also, U of Minnesota has great opportunities and that school offered me instate tuition. Those are the two other schools right now besides Drew that I am highly considering. I also hope to get into UC Davis because I liked their program. But Drew is sounding better and better lately.
These are such hard decisions and I want a school that will prepare me for the board exams the best and give me opportunities for great residencies. Also, having fun is important and L.A. is one of the best places for that. 😀

Does anyone know about what the primary care thesis (during fourth year) is like?

No prob! I understand that its difficult (but in a good way) trying to figure out where to go, and what would be the better fit for you. As for thesis portion, I remembered asking about it during my interview. They told me that its the real deal, and not just a quick paper, its worked on during the last two years at Drew (I guess there are classes/workshops) and the emphasis is definitely community based but could be clinical/basic-science (from what I remember). I wonder if this helps with residency programs? Doing extra research is never a bad thing...

so for those of us still waiting:

i called the admin. office this morning...spoke to a very nice lady
she said that they'll be interviewing until March 25th, and so will wait untill they finish interviewing to rank applicants and then send out decisions for everyone...

what i don't understand is how some people already received decisions...

the wait continues... 🙄

grumble... I liked the rumor of the 15th better. Grr.. ya had to go and contact the office and actually get FACTS though. Booo - can't we just continue to live with unsubstantiated rumors? It makes things much more fun.

I was told identical thing, except that they already offered acceptances to some people who 'haven't yet confirmed.' But at least there is still hope.

i just called the admin office and the very nice lady said the last interviews for MARCH will be on the 25th...and that another round of interviews will follow in APRIL. when asked about how much notice we should expect, she said that invites for those applicants coming in on the 25th will go out this week. 👍 👍

congrats to those accepted, good luck to those waiting!!!

I can't wait till april or may!! I'm going crazy!

My left eye has been twitching all day.
😱

hey guys,
i'm a current drew/ucla student. i'll try to answer a few q's..🙂
as far as how med school is going for us...no matter what program youre in, youll get what you put in out of med school. from my experience this year, drew students have mostly been above the class average in all 3 of our block exams and are by far some of the most involved students in our class. if there's a health fair, drew students are there...an afterhours clinic, same deal. the drew group is very driven and unique.

as far as board preparations, since youre doing your first 2 years at geffen youll get the exact same opportunity to do well on step one as any other person. the ucla curriculum teaches to the boards for the most part, so i feel pretty confident that i'll be prepared.

geffen students don't even blink when you talk about drew. i dont know if its the same for other classes but if you think about it, it would be lame for them to look down on you...we're all in the same boat, and there's no time for petty trash talking between us. we're all good friends.

3rd and 4th years are still bound to change but as of right now i believe only 2 rotations (surgery and neuro?) are not being done at mlk. ucla-affiliated hospitals are picking up the drew students on those. and im sure you've heard this before, if anything were to happen to the drew program, ucla has spots guaranteed for us. its looking good though, there's improvements going on every day and people that are working very hard to make sure that this hospital is around for a long time.

waiting for the acceptance is hard...drew is kind of unpredictable. i waited over 3 months for my acceptance last year and i know theres people in my class that got their acceptance upto a few days before prime (our orientation in july). so keep up the hope!! if you're truly interested in the program, send in anything that will show you're right for drew, and if you get an interview, it is crucial that you back up your words with experiences of why you want to come here. the medical student interview weighs a lot, so dont blow it off. they take what the students think pretty seriously. i think i may have interviewed a few of you back on 2/11...maybe ill see you on 3/25 (the last big interview day). good luck!

Thanks very much for the insight. I interviewed back in Febuary and i'm anxious to hear back from them.

so i called drew.. everyone is right, they're very nice there... I called to find out about post interview update letters and found out that they're sending a batch of REJECTIONS soon... she reassured me that i wasn't in the batch!! so there's still hope. I know we're all anxiously waiting to hear from them but you don't want to for the next few weeks

pre-interview rejections are also in the second and third batches of rejections going out in the next couple weeks...i called and she said i wasn't on the list (yay!), but i'm still being screened for an interview (oh so late, no?)...again, she said they will be interviewing in april, too. good luck!

btw, people received e-mail interview invites yesterday for march 25th...congrats!!!

I am really nervous after reading the post today. Oh God, i hope i am not in the batch of letters going out soon. Hope everyone has a nice weekend.

Grrr... I wish I hadn't read this. Now I am tempted to call and ask for my post-interview status... but I don't want to get bad news over the phone - and it would not be cool for me to scream like a teen-aged girl if I get an acceptance over the phone...Oh little status envelope - come to me soon.

Totally Feel...Interviewed Feb. 11th. But now i'm making a beat about this.

I think I'm going to start the hook with...

the suspense
it's pleasing me
