this has probably been asked before, but which are the cheapest/most expensive schools? holding all else equal and considering all of these factors:

1. tuition (obviously)
2. avg cost of rent for a 1 BR 1 BA in the area
3. cost of Utilities
4. cost of gas

i'm pretty sure costs of food and books are universal at all schools

I read that MSU is the most expensive at $50,000 every year or something, board/books/expenses not included. Is this true? 'Cause I think this will make it one of the, if not the most, expensive med school out there ... And frankly that price tag is just too too much.

WVSOM is 75k for out of state. =\

WVSOM is 75k for out of state. =\

In my above post, I listed tuition only.

$75k is the budget allowed for out-of-state students at WVSOM.

For example,
Budget cost for MS1 at WVSOM out-of-state is $73,996 (as listed on their website). Subtract $46736 as tuition (from aacom site), that leaves you with 27260 in other expenses.

Budget cost for MS1 at WVSOM in-state is $46,146 (as listed on their website). Subtract $18886 (from aacom site) as tuition, that leaves you with 27260 in other expenses.

http://www.wvsom.edu/applicants/finaid_budget.cfm

That's inexcusable.
300k for medical school?
I know that's just the recommended budget but still...
300k?
Give me a break.

I believe that it's only $75,000 for just first year students...then after the first year, the students are considered residents and get in state tuition which is FAR cheaper. Don't quote me on that, but i think i remember reading that about wvsom.

I'm a 1st year family med resident who graduated from AZCOM. I felt like I had a pretty good experience and had a good education. However, if I were to do it all over again, I would never go to AZCOM because of the tuition. I'm sure I could get an equivalent education elsewhere with much lower tuition, perhaps at one of the in-state school. I think I'd move to either Texas, Michigan, Oklahoma or Ohio and set up instate residency and then apply to their respective schools. Yes, we'll make good money when it's all said and done, but being in debt over $200,000 is simply ridiculous. Best of luck.

Can anyone confirm/deny this?

I interviewed there on 9/15 and during the financial aid portion, they told us that it is not possible to obtain in-state status at all during the 4 years if you apply as out of state. They made it very clear that if you are out of state, you will pay the out of state tuition for all 4 years. I am happy to have been accepted to WVSOM, but am VERY concerned about this incredibly high tuition:(

i just wanted to thank group_theory for sharing that research--it's beautiful :) i think i'm going to print it off for later reference. i was trying not to think about expenses until the end--this process is so stressful as is--but this thread woke me up (ignorance was bliss)...

blah, i apologize thinking wvsom's tution is only considered out of state for just 1st years....it's too bad that they don't lower it to atleast 50K b/c 70+ is absolutely ridiculous

i hate to say it, but at that price, unless you REALLY love OMT, if you are eventually going to go into primary care, I would just go caribbean. $300k for med school is completely ridiculous, regardless of the institution.

i dont know if this is completely accurate. I was in blacksburg last weekend and live 45 mins away from bradenton, and you can't tell me that the cost of living in bradenton is comparable to blacksburg. real estate along the gulf coast is soaring, and i know for a fact the sarasota-bradenton area is much more expensive to live in than blacksburg, va.

I see where you're coming from, and honestly I have know idea how the above numbers are measured, but in my experience the cost of living in Bradenton is comparable to Tennessee and certainly much cheaper than Seattle. Real estate , however, is a different story. $250,000 in TN will get you acreage and a mansion, here it will get you a 2 bedroom, 1 bath cottage built in 1950 (even less if it's in Sarasota). Of course, Tennessee doesn't have any sandy white beaches that I know about. The real estate market in Florida is crazy, but the cost of living here is not exceptional. You might want to look at the financial aid budgets for each school - the living expenses included are based on the cost of living in that particular area.

This is definately true. BUT I am going to WVSOM next year and here is why: I have 3 kids and I plan on doing family practice in a rural area. WVSOM is one of the best schools in the nation for this. Also, with kids there is NO WAY in He** that I am going carribean. I have a family to think about therefore elementary school and the "townlife" itself are VERY important to my family. WVSOM is a HUGE tuition commitment. The other thing though is that if you want to do primary care you could do the NHSC scholarship or a loan repayment program once you're done which is what I plan on doing. Now if you want t do primary care in philly or NYC when you are done than certainly WVSOM would not be cost effective. just my $.02

DMU-
Tuition=$31,000

I am renting a 3 year old townhouse in a nice part of town. 3 bedroom and over 1400 sq. ft. and pay only $775. Housing is really cheap. Love it!
(comming from the west, this is a steal!)

Iowa also has the cheapest gas in the nation. I just filled up at $1.93/gal.

Good luck to you. PM me if you need anymore specifics. :D

If you were to make a choice between Nova, TCOM, UMDNJ-COM, LECOM-Brandenton, PCOM, VCOM

I want to be in a warm area, I want a cheap tuition and cost of living, and I want to be in a very diverse student enviroment.

Does this fit for any one of these schools

UMDNJ-SOM fits all of these except possibly the warm weather depending on what you think is warm (I'm from CT so south Jersey is warm for me). SOM has THE MOST DIVERSE student body I believe of any of the DO schools.

best of luck

J

Hey DocJay,
As a fellow CT native, you should make it your personal mission to get me accepted to UMDNJ, my #1 choice:p

$35,00 is supposed to be cheap? I'm really in trouble.

Most if not all the tuitions posted on the aacom website are wrong. look up the tuitions on US news that is more updated
