where would one go check to see if a residency program has/had any accreditation issues or any problems - eg on the verge of being closed/was closed, etc?

The ACGME posts this information.

Go to http://www.acgme.org/

From the menu on the left, choose "Search Programs / Sponsors"

On the menu on the left, choose "Accredited Program History"

Follow the prompts and you'll see the entire accreditation history of the program.

Although it's worth noting that there will be no indication on the ACGME site if the program is simply on the verge of probation or loss of accreditation. Even if everyone knows exactly what's about to happen to the program, it won't be on the ACGME site until it actually becomes official.

The only way I know of to find out about pending actions is to ask your home program's chairman or program director. They are usually in the loop about major things like this, and will probably warn you, if you've applied to the program.

So it's usually worth running your list of programs by them at some point before making any final ranking decisions, and just asking them their opinion on the programs. They may not say specifically what sort of problems there are, but pay attention to which programs they steer you away from.

The RRC usually gives a program a very short cycle -- 1 or 2 years -- before going on probation or espcially before losing their accreditation.

Great, just found out one of my interviews is at a place that is on probation til 2010. Not sure what to do now.

how about a program that's listed as "continued full accreditation"-current, however, last date listed for a review date is 2005....
?wahts that all about, any idea

thanks bunches

Programs are not reviewed every year. Thus a program reviewed in 2005 and given full accreditation will probably be rereviewed next year (on a 5 year cycle) unless there is some reason to review earlier.
