^^^^^^ Totally agree with this. My son got FULL disclosure. More so from my wife who actively discouraged him. He certainly knew what he was getting in to and still chose one of the more grueling FM residencies, with inpatient and OB responsibilities. I really think this has been a good fit for him. He will be off to do a fellowship in June. All in all will be a well rounded Doc. I'm pretty sure he didn't do it for money or prestige.
Same here. People wonder why he gave up tech for medicine. However he chose to do computational research so that he can continue his tech passion.

I'll take this moment to slip in between the finances and luxuries conversation to give a shout out to all my slightly upper middle class comrades who could never afford $285,000 in tuition in any way but won't ever be given an ounce of financial aid because they beat out the brackets by a couple grand 😀. First world problem, I know, but please just let me grieve.

I am buying mine a Honda or Toyota to keep the toys away.., and avoid the any Stigma/stereotype..!
My kid would only want the ones Mr. Musk makes and given that I didn't pay for UG and he never had a car until now I obliged. I don't pay attention to stereotypes.

I'm just gonna put this out there.

If you always had a roof over your head, you are privileged.
If you never went to bed hungry, you are privileged.
If you always had electricity, heat, internet, hot running water, you are privileged.
If you had parents who were literate, you are privileged.
If you are white, you are privileged.
If you had access to healthcare while growing up, you are privileged.

This whole "does being a child of a doctor help or harm your application" is a nonsense question. Of course it helps your application. Just by merit of growing up in household that is financially stable and educated, you are granted innumerable benefits - everything from increased likelihood that you have proper nutrition and access to healthcare, being in daycare rather than left with older siblings, being read to, being able to participate in sports and go on field trips, having all kinds of supplemental educational access that is not attainable for low income families. Not to discount that plenty of physician families are emotionally abusive or unstable in other ways, but that doesn't change that the majority of physician families are going to be healthier, live in better neighborhoods, have access to better schools and recreation opportunities, be encouraged to do well academically, be supported in whatever paths they pursue.

By the time you get to your medical school application process you've been benefitted in so many ways you don't even realize. THAT is where the privilege happens, not in the admissions process.

that's why some of the participants want to further complicate the admissions process by imposing income thresholds! May be time to be like Cuba or USSR?

You might be surprised how many on this forum would answer yes to your question. Head over to the political discussions on the gas forum and see what I mean.

As plainly described by Winston Churchill
But then there's this:
Gilbert & Sullivan, Iolanthe, Act II

WILLISWhen all night long a chap remains
On sentry-go, to chase monotony
He exercises of his brains,
That is, assuming that he's got any.
Though never nurtured in the lap
Of luxury, yet I admonish you,
I am an intellectual chap,
And think of things that would astonish you.
I often think it's comical--Fal, lal, la!
How Nature always does contrive--Fal, lal, la!
That every boy and every gal
That's born into the world alive
Is either a little Liberal
Or else a little Conserv-a-tive!
Fal, lal, la!

As plainly described by Winston Churchill
Apparently that was not true

this is from Quotes Falsely Attributed to Winston Churchill - International Churchill Society

Conservative by the Time You’re 35

‘If you’re not a liberal when you’re 25, you have no heart. If you’re not a conservative by the time you’re 35, you have no brain.’

There is no record of anyone hearing Churchill say this. Paul Addison of Edinburgh University made this comment: ‘Surely Churchill can’t have used the words attributed to him. He’d been a Conservative at 15 and a Liberal at 35! And would he have talked so disrespectfully of Clemmie, who is generally thought to have been a lifelong Liberal?’

Actually, I am a fiscal conservative and social liberal and never voted for democrats. Car was not bought to save trees but as a tech device 🙂
The self driving cars are fascinating, and the feature "only" adds another $10k to the price. That sounds worth the price especially when pulling long hours in residency as a safety feature.

It's not fully there. It works well on freeways. Now Mr. Musk is switching to monthly subscription so my son will use it as needed during residency or away rotations during med school.

Subscription for the self driving feature or for the software updates needed to run the vehicle at all? I hope Musk hasn't gone full blown Bill Gates/Microsoft on us.
