Class of 2013!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Almost all, and maybe all, med programs will accept LOR's from VirtualEval, Interfolio, AMCAS, or postal.
Unfortunately, Georgetown has stated in their 2009 application guide that letters will ONLY be accepted via AMCAS - all other letters will be discarded. However, I sent an email to my premed advisor stating the following:

Dear Pre-Med Advisor,

I have discovered that several schools I am applying to (e.g. UVA, Georgetown, Cornell) are participating in the AMCAS letter filing service this application cycle. On Georgetown's website they state that letters of recommendation will not be accepted through any other mode of transmission. For these schools will you be automatically forwarding letters to AMCAS or will I need to request them specifically? Also, in the AMCAS section for the letter filing system, you can list letters as a "Committee Letter/Letter Packet" or "Individual Letter." Would I list the entire packet from the committee or would I have to list all of the letters individually?

Personally I feel this is only making the process more difficult and more confusing for students, and I wish this program had not been implemented with only a select number of schools participating. Thank you for your help.

Sincerely,

chad5871,

There will be an e-mail forthcoming about how to handle this.
You should list or check off that you are getting a committee letter. In terms of the transmission, we use a program called virtual evals to upload our letters to the various schools. The program allows us to upload letters to AMCAS and AMCAS will transmit to Georgetown as they want it.At or around July 17th, please e-mail me a list of schools you are applying to, your letter ID number, your AMCAS ID number and written permission to transmit your packet. It is confusing which is why we are using virtual evals.

I'm so glad my school's on top of this thing, but it seems like if you are using VirtualEvals or Interfolio or your University's letter service, you can just request the letters to be sent to AMCAS as if it were another school, and you won't have to get the individual letter-writers to submit one.

Hope this helps.

Good morning everybody on the west coast and good afternoon to everybody on the east coast and midwest and down south.

yeah...send out transcript requests is tedious (well at least for me since I have taken classes at so many schools)

It appears that even if you use Interfolio, you need to send the letters through the AMCAS letter service to those pilot schools. I.e. it is mandatory for the schools on the list that I have heard back from so far, that is, including Univ of Michigan and BU.

Looks like I'm going to get Interfolio!

OK guys...I talked to an AMCAS lady...if you are uisng interfolio....all you have to deal is print out the individual letter request forms from amcas and physically mail them into interfolio.com...they take care of it from there.

Shoot me a pm if you have a question...I should get back to you by sunday.

Ok, up until reading all this, I was just ignoring the LOR stuff. My school's premed commitee sends out all of my letters, so do I need to worry about it?

Only if you apply to any of the schools participating in AMCAS's LOR service. If so, then you need to have your premed committee send letters to AMCAS (making sure to include the letter ID for the packet - you'll see what I mean when you put it into AMCAS) and assign the letter packet to each school in AMCAS before you submit it.

Sorry if that's confusing - I can always clarify if you have further questions.

Great. This still pisses me off.

one of my schools is "on the list", but they say virtualeval or interfolio is okay too, as long as we do a virtual delivery. so I don't have to send my interfolio stuff to amcas AND the school, right?

If it doesn't cost extra money, I would say have them send it to AMCAS too, just to be sure. You can always decide not to release them to the school if need be, but I'm not sure how difficult it would be to go back to an already-verified application and add the letters to AMCAS's system.

Tried to do this, because my school also handles letters for us... but what did you put for all the information it requests after you select "committee packet" or what not?

Alright. I'm having a REALLY hard time deciding what schools to apply to.. Every day I want to add something new, and my GPA this semester turned out a few points lower (3.595 - 3.60?) than I was expecting it to (just got grades this week) .. so now I'm scared to death! I added all the schools on my mdapps into AMCAS and the total was $1,000+ 😱 Not happening.
Anybody have ANY input on schools or even how many schools would be "safe" for me? (3.59-3.60, 34-38 MCAT with good EC's but no real research)
HELP!

I checked my school in question's website again and shot em an email to be clear. no point in using the amcas lor system if I don't have to.

getting nervous-ish about scores. wish they'd hurry up!

I emailed my pre-med advisor and he said just to list his name/address/etc. as the primary author and not to list any others, not even the faculty on the committee that conducted my interview or the individual letter writers. It might differ based on each school's preference, however, so I would contact your pre-med advisor or whoever is in charge of your university's committee.

Congrats Chad!!

Thanks for the info, I'll e-mail.

Thanks everyone for the well wishes! I'm actually surprised at how many people in my graduating class are applying to med school with me. Two of my best friends are taking a year off as well. I figured there would be more on here that are too.

Well if there is anyone else lurking here that graduates this year: CONGRATULATIONS!

so I was wondering if I could still use interfolio even if my school creates a packet and uses career services to maintain your file. I was hoping I could mail my completed packet to interfolio and then they could e-send all of my letters to schools.

Can I do that?

thanks

I got my 3rd LOR into interfolio today....question about future classes???? when I enter future classes, I get a warning message saying I didnt enter any grades...and there will be asterisk beside it....Does this matter?

I did that the first time I applied. The verification went without a hitch.

Screw VR. 8 pt increase. I'm going to med school this year 🙂🙂🙂🙂

Thata girl Grad, I knew you were going to rock it! Hopefully I can do the same as you!

Whoa, we were on the 2nd page...Not cool

In MCAT news:

This was my first try and looks like there will be a second (as I predicted). Hey, at least it was balanced, and I did well on writing 9-9-9 R

Hey guys. I figured I would start posting here since I'm on one waitlist but am getting my stuff ready to re-apply for this coming cycle.

Aww Sorry Doc Henry, I remember your posts pre-mcat saying you were worried this might happen. On the bright side, you will be staying in the mcat forum a little longer to keep me company.

This test is a bitch.

Ugh I'm so sick of mcat.. I'm takinbg it next week but I want to take it alreaedy and get it over! On the bright side, I just got a blackberry and it's amazing, I am browsing sdn on my lunch break! This could be bad..

Thanks Berken. I'm actually kind of relieved (I know that sounds weird). But I'm glad it wasn't as bad as it felt, I had predicted more around 23-24. A 27 wont hold me back as far as getting secondaries and it's low enough that I have confidence I will go up in points on the retake. I would have been stuck in a bind if I got a 29 or something because I want over 30, but 29 is so close it may have been a risky retake.

Also, I had kinda given up on the test by about a week and a half before it, so I'm lucky I didn't really tank it.
