Class of 2013!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I don't really miss class as much as I miss living within 400 yards of my 30 closest friends. 🙁
good point. Okay I don't want your classes!

PS: congrats lossforwords I read the good news.

Yeah it does!

OK, I've been up since 4, so I'm going to take a little nap. Have fun at your classes, funkmonk (and pianola?)

Why have you been up since 4?

Pianola starts classes tomorrow.

LFW! I just saw your post! Where the hell have you been? 😡

Didn't your hear...err...see... LFW got engaged!

LFW, congrats, by the way... if I already did not say it yet...

Hey chad I have a whole day to spend in Richmond on February 3rd... I am probably gonna go with my sister to phyisology, (and bring my laptop also for SDNing😉) in the morning, but do you recommend anything to do afterwards?

You should meet chad!!!

👍👍

I'll probably be at work until around 5... but if you want to grab some food or a coffee around campus when I get off work that would be cool.

Other than that, I don't really know what to recommend... I've always thought the Science Museum in Richmond was really cool, but it's a couple of miles from the medical campus.

Yuck...I hate withdrawing from schools... I am very thankful that they gave me interviews, but I feel really bad...

Oh yeah, I remember seeing the outside when I was there during the summer...

My Research advisor brought the lab PIZZA. A successful experiment (1.5E-5 einsteins/(L*s) and free food. Today is a good day.

Good morning!!!!! Just woke up 👍

Hey funk, don't worry about it. They are well aware that people with withdraw. On a side note, of the schools you're into which is your top choice?

I dunno... I am torn between UT Southwestern and U of Maryland.... And UCLA still has not gotten back to me, and I have UVA and VCU coming up...

Isn't UTSW much cheaper? Why are you choosing those 2 over the others? Sorry I'm just curious to learn about how people rank. Also how do you get motivated to go to another interview when you are already into a school!

I actually withdrew from SUNY Upstate and UTMB, and I actually did not like SLU when I went (No offense) and I will withdraw from it... I feel that I should not take up a spot, since Upstate and UTMB will accept more people from the waitlist...
I liked UMD and UTSW both for the feel of the campus, the students, and the city.... They had amazing hospitals, and lots of opportunites for research and clinical care... I keep going back and forth as to which of those two is my first choice, and if you look at my SDN signature, you will see when I have changed my mind... UTSW is awesome, with world class facilities, Parkland Hospital, which holds the record for the most babies delivered every year, and I actually like the traditional lecture curriculum (don't tell UCLA😉) I know UTSW is cheaper, but I really liked UMD also, which was rather surprising... since I submit my secondary after months of my dad yelling at me to finish it... The interview day blew me away. The people were awesome, there was a lot of active research, the hospital was amazing, and I actually liked Baltimore... as strange as other people may find this statement...And it is close to DC... I 😍😍😍 the Smithsonian😀

Also how do you get motivated to go to another interview when you are already into a school!

If you look at my mdapps you will see a number of schools with I withdrew from preinterview for that reason. After getting an acceptance, I only went to schools which I would consider choosing over the schools I have been accepted at... And I research what I liked about the school initially which made me want to apply there... and if I could not find a good reason, then I withdrew... but usually this introspection helped me determine that I really did want to go to the school, and as a reason, I was recharged as to why I would like to interview/ go to that school...

Does this make sense...if not, it may be due to me being hungry and my stomach starting to gurgle... I forgot to bring my lunch with me...🙁

after reading a post on the all student forum, I have been inspired to make myself pancakes! Yummmm.

Pick UMD!

As of right now I'm

1. University of Maryland
2/3. VCU/NYMC
4. EVMS

But if I get into AECOM or Jefferson it's going to get interesting...

Even if I pick UMD, it won't matter, you will be at Columbia anyway:xf:

Venting moment: I just want to know what textbooks I have to buy and when my classes are being held! Is that too much to ask with classes starting tomorrow????? /rant.

*sigh*

Its better than walking all the way to the bookstore only to find out that the books have not arrived yet...

EDIT: Wait, you do not know when your classes are being held???

I cannot wait until medical school starts 😍

Neither can I, but if I go to UMD, I definitely wanna say hi, since we would be in the same city and all...

Haha, yeah, none of my teachers have posted textbooks. Probably some of them will and then they will not be in the bookstore. So I can waste LOTS of time, YAY!

Yeah, I have one teacher who just hasn't decided when the course will be offered. He got pissed at me when I called in mid-December to find out when he was going to hold class. So I'm not calling him again. [He apparently doesn't respond to e-mail.]

He's one of those teachers that expects a lot from students but can't seem to expect much from himself. Last class I took with him, 100% of lectures came from...wikipedia. Wikipedia, folks, is why I pay graduate tuition and not undergrad tuition.

/second rant.

But sometimes it is interesting to waste time in bookstores... I 😍 Barnes and Noble... and for some odd reason, I never liked Borders... When I went to get said books, I saw that one of the classes was reading As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner, which is one of my favorite books... I mean, who does not love Vardaman's line: "My mother is a fish." Pure genius!

But anyway, wow, that sucks, Wikipedia??? I hope you gave him an honest review...

And you called your professor, as in his home? How did you get his number? Why did you have his number?

I actually liked As I Lay Dying quite a bit. Read that in high school.

I gave the teacher an honest review, but the class was small enough and I was honest enough that I'm fairly sure he knew who gave him such bad scores 🙄. In retrospect, I probably should have been less honest given that I was going to be taking another course with him. He screwed me over in that class, too, actually. Because of his poor planning ability he required me to come in and work in his lab for 10 hours on a consecutive Friday, Saturday, and Sunday without any sort of notice whatsoever other than, "You'll be coming in tomorrow." (This was right before finals). I ended up spending 30 hours in his lab doing grunt work using time I could have spent studying. Complicated story, but basically he's just thoughtless about other peoples' time.

I called his office number, actually, not his home number. It's easy to access that by calling the department. I used to be a little intimidated by calling professors, but I guess I'm not any more. They're just people. You treat them with respect and they probably won't mind if you call. Also at this point, I'm not exactly 18 any more.

That sucks...but yah, when I know I will be taking another class with a professor, I usually give them a good review... actually I give all of my professors a good review because the last time I gave a bad review, I got a B in a 6 unit philosophy of science course 🙂barf:^infinity) and a B was the lowest grade you could get considering it was an honors course...

Oh and about the office number...oh😳

Yeah, I just didn't realize I'd need to take another course with him. 🙁

Technically, I could take another course that would count towards graduation, but I've learned that food safety courses more or less bore me silly.

Your class this afternoon sounds pretty interesting. I hope you have a good time. You'll have to let us know how it goes 🙂

From scratch?

Yea from scratch!!! I put in some flax seed, almonds, and dried cherries. Delicious!

Barnes and Noble is pretty awesome, I have to agree. I could go there and just sit and read random stuff for hours.

EDIT: Yes! I'm back on top of the world!

food safety sounds interesting imo (I am a microbiology major😀), but you have actually taken classes on it, so you know better...

how are you getting so many friend sso quickly?

That is what happens when you get into JHU... people fawn over you automatically😉

But seriously, in the matter of 12 hours, how???

Wow, the Wikipedia-wonder manages to screw me over once again. Lovely.

Now I get to scramble to find a class so I can actually graduate. (This class was one of very few that will fulfill my graduation requirements). The planning genius decides to announce the course schedule when? Less than 18 hours before school starts. And now I can't register for a new class until tomorrow. And I have no idea what's even open.

I am really actually furious. I contacted this teacher twice, as politely as I possibly knew how, to inquire about the course schedule. I told him that I needed it for graduation and I perfectly understood if he couldn't accomodate my schedule, but just to let me know if he was going to have the class at a time I couldn't take it. He blew me off both times, the second time saying explicitly that he would accomodate my schedule which he had asked for. I purposely did not contact him during the break because I didn't want to bother him about the class schedule, even though it inconvenienced me to not know when I could plan volunteering hours.

The only thing I asked was for some notice. That was all I asked. If he can't accomodate my schedule and I'm one of 7 people in the class, then that's fine. That's TOTALLY his prerogative. He doesn't have to bend his life around me.

Lying to me about accomodating my schedule and announcing it at the last moment is NOT his prerogative. 👎thumbdown He didn't even apologize for this last-minute announcement.

Well, on the up side, I guess this guy's not going to screw me over again.
