poor kitty, his head's too small for his body.

or his body is too big for his head.

I dunno about that, but it's one of the premier piano makers, that's for sure.

Stradivarius is much older than Steinway. Stradivarius, as you may or may not know, is the well-recognized family (from Italy?) that made string instruments several centuries ago.

Steinway just makes very well-designed pianos and they're recognized as the best in the business (currently).

Stradivarius string instruments have a special resonance that creates a particularly aesthetically pleasing tone (because they're made from wood that's specially prepared). They're also very durable and have lasted for centuries -- in general there are very few Strads whereas Steinways are everywhere.

Steinway is still doing business. Lots of business. Still making pianos. I'm not sure exactly what's so special about them except that they tend to get the best tone (from experience). They're just widely recognized.

Some more funny ones

What's wrong with Simon & Garfunkel? I don't think that's embarrassing or anything.

I'll give you a list of artists with one of their better songs IMO.

- Amos Lee - Seen It All Before
- Ben Harper - Walk Away
- Bon Iver - Skinny Love
- Ray LaMontagne - Shelter
- Teitur - I Was Just Thinking

I have more but I'll just start off with five.

I think Teitur was the best, and then a very distant second was Ray LaMontagne... Bon Iver was not bad, but I did not like Amos Lee or Ben Harper...

Interesting...
Pianola, do you have a steinway?

To each their own I guess. Let me know if you want some other recommendations.

Haha, not a Steinway grand. Yamaha's are the best for uprights -- and I have a Yamaha upright.

A Steinway grand would likely cost more than my entire medical education [😱].

I love Steinway grands, though. They're delicious. Like a very fine French dessert.

I am listening to Sleep with the lights on by Teitur...and Duffy is pretty good also...

See, I told you I was picky...

Well, when you become a successful radiologist, you should buy one😀 And then you should perform for us 2013ers😀😀😀

Here's a few more (not sure if you'll like these):

- Iron & Wine - Passing Afternoon
- Joshua Radin - Everything'll Be Alright (Will's Lullaby)
- Cat Power - Lived In Bars
- Fleet Foxes - Ragged Wood
- Guster - Keep It Together

ok, i need to go run some errands.

later dudes! :hello:

Yeah I think she's very good. There's a lot of up-and-coming soul singers out there now, what with Joss Stone, Amy Winehouse, Adele and also Duffy (if you've heard of her).

Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings are excellent as well.

I can't stand Duffy. Ever hear her live? Yech... I only judge singers by their live performances.

Wow, chasing pavements was really good... 👍

Any other songs or artists you guys would recommend?

I also like Adele's "Daydreams" and "Make You Feel My Love" (it's a cover of a Bob Dylan song).

whoa, she's got a great voice! 👍

great video too, so creative.

Yeah she writes most of her own stuff too. She seems like a mature and interesting individual. I'd love to meet her sometime.

anyone ever seen 'ace of cakes' on food network? that seems like a fun place to work.

i wish that place was in my area.

That is one of the things drawing me to UMD... since it is in Baltimore also😳

Yeah I've thought about that in regards to UMD before! I've looked up the cake shop and unfortunately you can't go in unless you're ordering a cake. 🙁 Ever see the ear cake they made for a doctor at Hopkins? It was awesome!

Yeah I saw her on SNL and she was pretty bad, I'll admit. Maybe it was just an off-day though.

Kanye-West-Auto-Tune-Disaster bad?

C'mon people. I've got an hour to kill while I wait for this autoclave. Amuse me!

...Please??

Everyone on SNL sounds bad. They need to hire some new audio engineers on that show. I swear that they have the EQ set the same for the sketches as they do for the musical guests. Duffy always sounds like that though (see below).

at least im in better spirits, eh?🙂

Ugh. Stop it with the journal articles already. Seriously.

I'm really annoyed with reading nothing but journal articles for hw 👎.

So I did a quick google search to find some funny job titles (I'm a little tired w/ having the same "MS 0" title that everyone seems to have, and it doesn't seem so clever when EVERYONE does it 😛), and though I don't think I'll use any of these, I was amused

"Skull Grinder," "Chick Sexer," "Mother Repairer," "Bat Cave Scavenger," "PHP Ninja," "Debubblizer..." they go on forever 😀

I think so...

Yeah, in some ways it's better than memorizing a ton of facts without understanding the experimental bases for why they're true.

But it gets plenty monotonous after a while. And there are tons of unimportant details that you have to filter through.

OK, I am now accepting votes for 'the most annoying journal'.

My vote for today: PNAS. The journal is structured all backwards with the materials and methods near the end (as if materials and methods were 'no big deal'). A pretty large number of the submissions (maybe 80% or so) are crap or near-crap -- poorly thought up or executed or explained -- because they are only 'sort-of peer reviewed'. And by 'sort-of peer-reviewed', I mean you can probably get your buddy from grad school to read over your submission and say 'yup, looks good to me.'

/rant.

Ding ding ding, we have a winner

Does PNAS stand for Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences?

Yeah, the best journals usually say "Journal of..." or one word like "Nature."

Yup. Yup. I thought PNAS was supposed to be good.

Turns out it's teh suck.

PNAS is one of the best journals. It's organized so you can quickly extract info when you are already pretty proficient in the methods

Mmm....ok, well, perhaps it depends on the reader.

And what about that whole 'peer-reviewed' business?

I've read about 4 articles from PNAS in the last day (and I'm not sure how many in the last couple of years) and all of them have been really unclear or based on post-hoc analysis or...well, a myriad of problems.
