Class of 2013!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I had a momentary freakout.

I went mad, crazy, wacko...I just could not take it anymore. What with the everone and their brother asking about GPA/MCAT top schools bottom schools

East schools/west schools
Expensive schools/cheap schools

I flipped,
Went bonkers

I feel your pain :bang:+pissed+

Sankondbest! What school are you choosing my friend?

Dunno yet.

The cheap school vs. My dream school

that thread that I started got like 200+ responses and I read them all and there seems to be no set answer...about 50:50.

I figure I will wait to see if I get any scholarship love or free money love from either school. If I get even a bit of free money from either school (like 5,000/year) that would probably make me choose that school.

I am crossing my fingers that one of the schools has a scholarship for middle class white kids (although I am going to try to work the "I am 25% spanish" angle to see if I can get some URM love)who have no undergraduate debt, are cynical and have a sense of entitlement.

Hey, I got some $$ and I'm a middle class white kid (or reasonably so anyway). It happens.

I'm not expecting any love for financial aid 🙁 I think I'm right above the cut off... and being an URM doesn't influence financial aid sankondbest. Or scholarships, as far as I know. Nobody is throwing any money at me...

which in turn reminds me of...

Anotherface, how is BC looking in the tournament? Do we suck?
I was referring to the madness that ensues the release of acceptance/rejection letters at non-rolling admission schools. As for the tourney, I don't follow basketball. 🙁🙁🙁

oh for some reason i thought you were a basketball guy. my bad! everyone is going crazy over here with march madness... I guess SDN's version is these non-rolling schools. And today the 4th years found out if they matched. very exciting.

There are definitely some schools with minority directed scholarships. But they're scholarships not aid, so it's most people will still not end up getting them.

any scholarships geared towards URMs (not from a school) that I have found were need based. I guess none of the schools I applied to had any scholarships for URM students. Either way, I wouldn't hang my hat on it.

Welcome back.

they found out if they matched..they find out where they matched later.

ah, yeah, I guess they can scramble if they didn't match. Apparently they're going to redo the entire system by the time that our class matches... the scramble is going to be a more formalized system now.

this scamble thing terrifies me

Sometimes people get really lucky with the scramble. My brother's roommate scrambled into anesthesiology at NYP, and I know someone else who scrambled into urology at Duke (wtf?)

wow how did that happen.

Don't apply to residencies like a toolbag and you'll be fine. I know this is a premed POV and extremely simplified, but if you apply within your means you should match somewhere, more than likely.
agreed. I don't know enough about the residency app system yet but I promise to play it smart.

wow how did that happen.

I guess it just depends on how many applicants there are and their preferences, and how the interview list at a given school is compared to the people's preferences. If Duke didn't fill their seats with the people they interviewed then they'll have an open slot, I dunno how that would happen with such a top program but whatever... lol

I agree. But it's still a somewhat disturbing concept. The whole matching thing itself actually freaks me out somewhat with regards to your limited control of where you end up geographically.

Do I have control issues? Perhaps.

yeah, there's a lot of self-selection necessary in the residency application process. Most residencies have really high acceptance rates, though, except for derm.

It seems like anesthesiology has a fair number of scramble positions.

😱.

What did people entertain themselves before the internet? I guess I'm old enough to remember the crappy non-highspeed internet, but it seems I've blocked it out.

this video is like a train wreck, I can't stop watching it haha.

Apply to only residencies in a certain area. Being from the northeast I know I won't have too much difficulty finding a potential residency if I apply within PA, NY, and the surrounding states. Granted, I make the cut for those programs.

That's what I find freaky about it. If you're forced to apply broadly, perhaps ignoring location then there is potential for badassed speciality of choice.

Are any of you guys doing the early morning St. Patricks drinking thing?

As much as I'm a morning person, I just can't bring myself to get in line outside of a bar at 7am. I'll probably go out in the evening though.

Edit: St. Patrick's day is tommorow, yes? Last year the switched it on me.

Today is St. Patrick's day, as in, its past midnight.

I won't be able to go out. However, the town of Scranton has a huge parade every year. The day, which is always the Saturday before St. Patty's Day, is aptly named: Parade Day. So yes, I did my early morning drink, as in 7 a.m. Kegs and Eggs... alright no kegs, but definitely eggs, home fries, sausage, bacon, toast, and a fine assortment of Strongbow, Yuengling, Tecate, Key Light, and Corona. Later on, there was some Lionshead added to the mix.

I've started drinking already and I can't wait for the eggs at 7am. Damn I fail: I only manage to post three times in a row with smilies only

I think I would seriously break down and cry. It's great to be able to go into your career of choice but it would suck to be somewhere you didn't like for SIX YEARS. Somehow that seems much more serious than getting into a med school you didn't like.

since it's match? yeah... i mean your first 3 years of the program are in general surgery so I guess in that case it REALLY DOESN'T MATTER where you live lol. the ~60 hours a week you'd spend outside of work will probably be spent sleeping or eating anyways 🙂
