Yeah, my boyfriend and I are being extremely cautious. He doesn't even graduate from undergrad until next year! And he's not positive he's staying in the US 🙁 though he seems to be leaning toward it. We've been together for two years so far and I've been optimistic from the start, but every now and then I panic. We're going to be long distance indeterminately.

My mother wants me to get married and start having kids before residency. 😱 She says I should give my boyfriend an ultimatum of I want to be married by the time I'm 25 or that's it (I'm 22). Umm... not the right time for that talk yet.

There is no better way to scare the crap out of a man than ultimatums :laugh:

long distance isn't a fun time... but it's not the end of the world. I've done it. I know a few other people on here have done it or will be doing it (BD & his wife will be apart for a year). If you go into it with the right attitude you can survive it... I'd rather be away but know we will be back together, then not have them at all.

I never really think of my parents as old, except where they're around little kids. They totally go into grandparent mode when they are around little kids.

I think my not wanting kids rhetoric depresses them...

You should have my mom. I mean she *really* does NOT want me to get married. Like, ever.

I swear she'll be sitting there on my wedding day, shaking her head sadly.

Teenage girls can appreciate good writing.

I liked the books! I just wish they'd been written better because it's actually a decent story but a lot of people give it crap because of the quality. I would've loved it when I was a young teen.

My mother told me, less than two weeks ago, that once she's seen me get married, she can die happy. 😱 She likes my bf (just wants him to lose weight) well enough, but she's also told me that if I meet someone I like while in med school I should just marry him instead.

Hell yes. There were a few times when I wondered if we should just pre-emptively break it off, but then I remembered what being single was like, and not only that but I'm so happy with him, that the small amount of misery that long distance brings is nothing to throw this all away for.

thats pretty much me too. it will be 4.5 yrs come june and while we are definitely committed we both feel that marriage should wait until after graduate school, or at least until 4th yr or so. also getting married will cahnge financial aid too and not necessarily for the better.

Lyss, are you and your SO both going to med school?


...and as for long distance, I'll be in NY and he'll be 7 1/2 hours away in Morgantown, WV. Luckily my family lives at basically the halfway point in MD but loans don't include gas money to go home every couple weeks 🙁

ha yeah...mom my is starting to pressure me as well...and when me and my last gf broke up she was quite distraught....but then I convinced her she would not have wanted the wicked witch of the east as her daughter-in-law or the baby momma of her grandkids.

My brother does not have kids...and he will not be having any any time soon...so the burden is on me!

No he was premed but he recently got accepted to law school. So we will both be starting in the fall 😱

I was thinking with my great verbal score I'd do well on the LSATs and if I didn't get in this year, make one hell of a malpractice attorney 😀
