Class of 2013!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
We saw a few 24 week kids here all grown up in our first day in med school (where you meet patients and learn their stories) The kids were cool but they will have problems for the rest of their lives... sucks. They seemed happy though.

That's pretty cool.. I think that's just what life is - no matter what you're born with, there isn't much of a benefit to dwell on it too much. UW specific: is this just a first-day thing or are there patient project type things where you follow some patients over some time period longer than a day?

mkay that was weird... your dark room and my dark room movie are completely different, I assure you

I really hit it off with the neonatal group I spent a few months with. He told me that he'd love to hire me when I got through, that with my work that I'd done there he could tell I'd make a great neo. Plus they'll be looking to retire by then  I was thrilled and feel so blessed. I would absolutely love to practice there.

LOL, that is weird if you were watching "Dark Rooms" when I made that post. 😱

That's awesome. Never hurts to look ahead a little bit.. so you're definitely doing some sort of peds-related speciality, right?

We had a girl come in to talk to us that had retinopathy of prematurity... she had no eyes (she was not only blind, but had no eyes too) that was kinda weird.

Not totally sure I like the idea of neo in that context though... ever run the numbers on what it costs to save a 22 week baby that won't live a normal life?

There's a lot of ethics involved and a lot of decisions parents havr to make at those early stages. I sat in on some conferences... it can be heart wrenching to withdraw support but much less cruel sometimes (esp pre-26/27 weeks)

Kind of, we still see the same people sometimes during other school events but it's more of a thing to introduce students to patients during orientation...

I've always been a night owl. I stay up really late & wake up semi-early

anyways, RR, did you see what I wrote about my friend's ad?

oooh yes, I did a project on this. It gets crazy from all sides-ethics committees, parents, extended family, sometimes even the media will butt in and communities get involved.

I wanna go abroad my summer in between M1 & M2. That seems to be the IT thing right now. Cornell really emphasized global research at their revisit.

do you have any idea where?

Nope, not until you mentioned it. I think I'm too lazy to check the Allopathic class sub-forums, haha. That looks like a great place in a great location, I'll be sure to shoot her (KP, right?) an email.

yeah, she's one of my favorite people in the whole world, she'd be a great roommate and it's an awesome place.

what kind of global research? I think I'm going to travel after boards and before m3 starts but that'll probably be my last opp for a bit!

I have a few ideas. i'd love to go back to Nicaragua. Cornell seems to have some strong affiliated hospitals in Tanzania. That seemed really popular. I think I'd like that too. I'd love to improve my spanish tho

I have no clue. I'm not a big research fan but I think that's only because I've never found any that interested me. There is more to life than bench research, so I need to find it.

Paper from undergrad but published while I'm a M1 will help for residency right? I'll be the second author and the paper will only have three authors.

It's not related to surgery at all it's just basic biochem science.

Or would residencies not consider it because I did the actual research while an undergrad?

Either option sounds beyond awesome !

It'll help, any research helps, probably not as much as one you'd publish in med school though.

If you can vouch for her, then I'll accept that. Last time I lived with females tho, I had a traumatizing experience. And by that I mean, this was when I realized that girls aren't necessary cleaner than guys 😛 Ah, the follies of summer subletting right after freshman year.

Not sure what her timetable is, or when I'll be in Madison next to start my housing search, though. But the location is definitely great.

Tanzania! 😱 Doesn't Cornell have a hospital or med school or something in Qatar also?

Good question, I'd like to know this. What about research publications that I worked on after undergrad (during and right after post-bac) but before medical school?

ok thanks. I'm gonna do research in med school too if I can.

that's true...what part of tx do you live in?
I am currently in AZ 🙂sleep🙂 but I lived the last 4 years in Austin....geez, the one year I am over 21, and don't have school, I am NOT in Austin with the chance to go to 6th street on our birthday. Which, as with any holiday that has anything to do with alcohol, is a big party down there. 🙁

Yes sir!

I think she just wants to rent out the other room ASAP because she had someone who was going to sign the lease with her that bailed. I don't remember when she's moving out of her current place but it's definitely not THAT far away! I don't think you'll have to worry about cleanliness, her last place was spotless and she apologized for it being dirty when we came in... 🙄

Sounds about right. Still, it feels like there just isn't that much time to devote to cranking out papers while in med school.

It just depends, PIs are usually happy to stick med students on papers because it looks good, especially if they're published after you graduate... haha The project I'm on now is pretty much gold, we're looking at 5-7 pubs on one technique alone...

There's always clinical and translational research!

My friend at USC went to Nicaragua for spring break... supposedly medically related, but all of her fb pics appear to be beach and partying... hmm...

not from what I can tell. No one seemed really old at 2nd look.

Any news on where you'll be scarlet?
Nope. Still desperately trying to figure that out. Also, by old I meant like 26+? 😛 Old enough to not have automatically joined facebook as a college student.
