CLASS OF 2014...how ya doing?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
My parents came today and were asking about the coat ceremony because another coworkers daughter is goin to school and she has one. I was like, we don't have one first yr 🙁

Oh, I think it's MUCH better the way Penn does it. I went to their 2009 White Coat ceremony. It was great. They do it at "end of Core" as you leave the classroom behind forever and go into the hospitals. It's the perfect time for the White Coat Ceremony.

i wish there was part of orientation that parents could come though and they can do the whole talk about how great we are for accomplishing this... My parents are really proud but that whole feeling slips in the cracks when there is no function for them to come too and its just like BOOM i start school haha

What about Parents & Partners Day? Isn't that done anymore?

sry, when did i post that? years ago?? lol there is a Parents and Partners Day! found out about it when school started, last week. wow, i cant believe its only my second week haha feels like so long!! Anyway, that is nice, but it is at the end of the month or beginning of Oct, i can't remember.

I do think the ceremony after the Core classes will be nice. It will be more special and have more meaning since we start clinics

Yeah, I was late to the thread!

Well, when your parents come for your White Coat Ceremony in third year it really will mean so much more then than now.

That makes sense. I find that headless dogs are a lot easier to treat.

BAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! Sorry, you just made me LOL in real life. Our lab group has been making way too many jokes about how well behaved our dog is. Didn't even protest having a leg removed, or being skinned....it's amazing!

It's nice that yours is so well behaved. Ours needs a couple of hemostats clamped on it! Seriously, it seems like there is just a lot of blood left, and whenever we cut into the deep muscles, it looks like a raw steak. 😱

i like taking the veins/arteries out and stretching the latex or w/e is inside there lol its fun to play with

Hahaha. When I went to put my group's dog back in the freezer I was like, lay down, now stay....good dog!

I think I would take your dog over the one our group has any day. Our dog is SO fat, I mean, I could easily spend the entire lab session pulling fat off and still not see all of the muscles clearly. I wish she could get liposuction. make my life easier

I've heard from somewhere that in the spring the second years put on a "half way to clinics" party...and it is essentially a prom. kill me now.

Don't worry... A lot of people have fun at it, and if that's not your thing, you don't have to go 🙂

As far as people calling it prom... It's always seemed like to me that the "prom" reference came from the fact that it's kind of a mouthful to say "Hey have you gotten your ticket to the Halfway to Clinics Banquet?"...I don't call it prom, but don't really think it's too irritating when people do. It's probably the closest thing to a prom that a lot of us will go to post-high school graduation, so I can understand why people nickname it that.

First physio test for us today! Good luck to me and all the other UTK 2014ers.

First anatomy test today....urk. T minus 4 hours.

First anatomy test today....urk. T minus 4 hours.

We had our first anatomy exam this morning over the thoracic limb and pelvic limb. It really wasn't bad at all! Ours was over the muscles, ligaments, joints, bones, insertions, attachments, radiographs and all of lecture but no innervations or vasculature. We had kind of a rough week with 2 quizzes and 2 exams but it all worked out. Only rough part is that there isn't much down time since our next exam is Tuesday! Oh well, the 2nd years are throwing a big party for us tonight so we should be able to blow off a little steam.

Good luck to everyone else facing their first one down!

I had a histology quiz today, but there wasn't too much stress because it's worth a ridiculously small amount of our grade.

In other news, I got to draw cow blood yesterday, and chicken blood today, and it is hilarious how different the techniques are. Really fun, though.

We had our first physiology exam this morning. Our grades were posted later this afternoon, and I did really well! It's so reassuring to see that I can actually do this stuff!

Hopeful, how'd it go????

That's a good question. I think it went OK. I don't think I made an A but a B isn't outside the realm of possibilities.

Some questions I flat out didn't know but those were in the minority.

Guess we'll see in a couple of days! Can't worry about it now: got a phys test on Monday.

I'm with you on that one. It felt good to see how well I did and know that I really did get the material. Let's hope bacteriology goes even half as well next week. :scared:

While I think it's great that we're all excited, I think it's important to have respect for the animals we use for learning. These animals didn't have a choice as to where they would end up, and have essentially given their lives so vet students like us can learn and save other animals.

I think that telling it to 'sit' and 'stay' is pretty innocuous. You're in a room full of dead things and have to cope somehow.

There is a point where a line is crossed, though. I'm recalling this thread:

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=520446

Because I don't think it explicitly says, the song they mention as playing in the video is, believe it or not, "Bodies" by Drowning Pool.

I kinda cringe to bring it back up (though I'm sure the video is long gone) but it's a good reminder of what might be appropriate and what absolutely isn't.

That video sounds bad.

I'm not sure how I feel about the "sit, stay" thing. I think it is a little bit of a turn off but if that is how people cope with dissecting....there are worse things (like the video mentioned)
No one has said anything like that in our anatomy group. We just named her Penny because she has an orange circle on her 🙂

BTW- i am running for class president so wish me luck!! 😍

I wasn't trying to disrespect the animal or whatever. I was just trying to make light of things. I know that the animal didn't get to choose to be cadaver for teaching purposes. BlacKat good luck! Let us know how the elections go!

Good luck! Just try to remember how precious Dr. Bemis is while you take it...it should help you refrain from balling your test up and throwing it at him on the way out...

Kidding of course, since there are always a few that get decent grades on his tests (and I'm rooting for you!). His tests are just historically....um, challenging🙂 But if you haven't heard by now, there is a LARGE curve at the end and everyone will be ok.

Honestly, he actually seems like a really nice guy. Rote memorization classes just aren't my friend. I get the concepts of microbiology and how bacteria work, but the idea of memorizing a whole list of facts about each one is daunting me.

Seeeee I told you that vet school isn't all that hard!! What was the class average?

We don't get to see the tests except for in the review sessions. They put our grades up on blackboard. All of our class averages for all the tests have ranged from like 82- 93 or something like that

ahh i dont get it! how is a 98 possible?? u missed 1 question or just 2 points off of a question? don't get me wrong, i am very happy for u!! congrats!! ive just never heard of this happening before in such a hard class, and i know i could never be THAT perfect. im praying our averages aren't that high!!

This is why vet school has ruined my self esteem. I'll be happy with an 85, until I find out the class average was a 93, and several people got a 100, and then I feel like the most stupid person in the world. That feeling every week for a year = 🙁. I think this year I'm sticking my fingers in my ears and singing LALALA every time some one starts talking about grades.

Honestly, the class consensus was that the exam was a lot easier than expected. We all studied our asses off, and I for one, was expecting a lot more in depth questions. I expect the average to be somewhere in the mid 90's, based off what I've been hearing so far. Definitely don't judge your grades based off of someone at a completely different school-- it just doesn't work that way.

We had a bunch of short answer "definitions" worth three points each,
and then some longer questions worth ten points each (properties of different types of ion channels, second messenger systems, etc) as well a few random 2-6 pointers. So really, there was any number of ways to only lose two points, whether it was a 2 pt question, partial credit, or just missing a minor part of a bigger question.

I can't speak for Lissa, but I completely missed one definition question (blanked on IPSPs, -3, blahhhh) and used a wrong word to describe an equilibrium (-1).

ok, i guess this makes me feel better lol 🙂 honestly, i'm trying to study my ass off...but i can't. i'm studying every free time I have but it has been 9 days of school and we have finished the thoracic and pelvic limb, and had 14 biochem lectures. i just can't believe it. I haven't even bothered studying any other classes. Is anyone else feeling this way? I feel like we're going super turbo fast. Don't get me wrong, i still love vet school and i enjoy what i'm learning but this super speed is insane. I can't believe its only been 9 days haha

Same here. So...many...facts about bacteria! I just wish that we didn't have an anatomy test the next Monday! That exam is the one that really worries me! So much to know, and the exam is only 23 questions! :scared:

Well, I'm currently putting off studying for an embryology quiz that's tomorrow so I thought I'd chime in! So far, vet school is going pretty well for me. I absolutely love WSU and am so glad I ended up here! My classmates are really incredible and so far we are getting along wonderfully.
The actual school aspect is going OK. It is definitely an overwhelming quantity of material and I'm a little concerned that I'm devoting so much time to studying anatomy that I'm neglecting everything else. Our first exam is a week from tomorrow in cell physiology, which I've spent almost no time studying so I'm definitely getting worried.
One cool thing we're taking is a principles of surgery class, which is a nice break from all of our non-clinical courses. In the lab for that course we are learning how to scrub, gown, and glove, and also learning hand ties and suture patterns. We also have an animal handling lab which is really fun, last week we got to go out to the teaching barn and learn how to do physical exams on cows, sheep, goats, llamas, and alpacas.
I also spend as much time in the teaching hospital as I can. The ag barns are especially welcoming to first years, and I've been able to see a lot of interesting cases out there. I also got to observe a colic surgery the other day, which was a great experience.
I am definitely enjoying vet school, but I'm also exhausted and worried about all of the exams in the coming weeks. At least we're all in the same boat, right?

I think I win some sort of award for the first person to go to the ER because of vet school activities. I got my butt kicked by a sick, pissed-off cat who went from slightly nervous to butt-kicking mode without warning. I counted 38 separate places where he managed to break skin (he grabbed my wrist/forearm and didn't let go) with bites and scratches. Despite getting clavamox right after it happened yesterday, I developed cellulitis today and had to go to the ER for more drugs. I feel bad for the poor kitty who won't get the treatment he needs, but if he doesn't want to be a patient then we can't help him. He actually attacked another person first in the same fashion, then went for me since I had helped peel him off of her.

😱

Feel better!

Whoa, crazy. Tis why I don't trust cats. They go all exorcist on your ass.

Also I forgot to mention that we've lost someone in our class already, but I don't think it was due to grades or anything. She deferred til next year so I think it's medical related.

Yes BlacKat I think we are going at a very high speed and I don't think I've ever seen a 98 in my test box; I'm pretty sure the averages are a lot lower.

Doesn't really matter though, we all take the same test at the end so as long as everyone is learning the material, passing the tests, passing the NAVLE, and becoming good vets it doesn't really matter if the grading is the same from school to school.

I heard about it yesterday from a classmate when I was hanging out in homeroom, then saw the pics on FB today.

I have to say I was rather impressed with the feline's handiwork, and I've worked for a pretty long time with somewhat unsocialized research cats so that's saying something. 😉 Hope it calms down a bit soon.

was that at the Mercer clinics? jeepers. see - cats scare me. love em - but grew up allergic. I never really learned how to handle them, so I'm terrified (and they always seem to know it, no matter how cool I try to be). My folks barn cats are sweet, but I've met some pissy kitties. And they always seem fascinated with me (i think they like that I avoid them - it makes them curious) 🙂

Give me a biting dog over a pissy cat anyday 🙄! Maybe I'll feel better after our clinical skills classes!

One of the reasons cats always approach the people who don't like them as opposed to the ones who do is that in cat language, a direct stare is a form of confrontation. People who want to interact with them generally stare or watch them a little too much for their comfort, so they avoid those people and tend to go to the ones who are, as far as they're concerned, being polite by not watching them.

So during the bacteriology test today, i really tried to remember that Dr. Bemis is really a great guy because he really is...but right now...that's just not working. I'm pretty sure that i did not do well on that test at all and i don't know how much that curve is going to help me, considering how i probably did. I mean, that curve needs to be amazingly huge, like amazon river huge. ugh

Haha, once I got to the last couple of pages, I kept trying to think the same thing. I heard that some people wrote paragraphs for the short answer questions on the back. ....Pretty sure I wrote one or two words on each one. And some of those words may have been made up words.

More worried about anatomy though! :scared:

I got a good grade on my first anatomy test! The second years are putting on the annual anatomy party tonight to celebrate the first years surviving the first test. This year it is a bonfire! I feel like I'm starting to settle into things and have found a good balance between school and husband/social life. Loving school so far!

Lissarae, glad anatomy is going well for you.

I can't believe it has only been a week. I have learned so much and done so much that it seems like longer. The past few nights, I have pretty much sacked out right after getting home and eating dinner, although Wednesday I spent 2 hours with nyanko reviewing bone anatomy. My schedule next week is going to be pretty crazy with club meetings and such starting up.

In anatomy, we learned the bones of the axial skeleton and thoracic limb and will start dissecting this coming week. In behavior, we briefly covered a wide range of topics and we will have a final next week. P-chem has been kind of all over the place but intense. They're making an effort to use some case discussions in p-chem, but for the first one the connection to what we were getting in class was tenuous at best. Hopefully, that was just the awkwardness of the first week and not having covered much yet.

I like histo a lot more than I thought I would! Nyanko and I have been geeking out over trying to ID everything on each slide, even though we're only supposed to be studying epithelium. Doing so helps put it all in perspective and isn't that hard with all the resources online.

Pic 1 - Evening of the attack, highlighting superficial but dramatic scratches.

Pic 2 - Showing some punctures on wrist, about 24 hours post butt-kicking.

Pic 3 - Cellulitis over/around carpal canal from puncture on lateral wrist - notice the new red line just proximal to the palm - taken just 5-6 hours after pic 2.
