Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think I'm somewhat of a big name chaser. 😳
It might have to do with my choice of undergrad or the fact that my definition of a big name is a little less than some people's. To me, OSU is a big name.

I don't blame you... anywhere I go is going to be more recognizable than my puny undergrad.

I'm bracing myself to make a tough decision if my top choice (UMich) ends up being much more expensive than my state school (UIowa). What would you guys do? I'll admit I don't want to stay in Iowa all that badly, and my fiancee was unimpressed with Iowa's pharmacology research whilst doing an REU there, while UMich is probably going to blow her mind this weekend when she interviews. 😛

It's nice to know things can change.

Sometimes I just feel like a Texas Tech quarterback trying to make it in the NFL draft, if yall get my drift.

haha, yup...

hopefully you'll make it... but if you don't, you'll get over it so quickly that you'll surprise yourself... an MD is an MD... it really is...

HOWEVER, I'm an M1, so I'm pretty ignorant at this point, but from what I've seen up to now, it's really all about how you do.

Thanks guys. Yeah, I'm not too worried about it. A little bit closer to figuring out where I'm headed next year. And yeah, I think OSU is totally a big enough name for me.

Yeah met, still haven't heard from UCLA. I'm also WLed at UCI but I might choose OSU over them.

One thing that's nice to know is that pretty much all M1s say that here, so there must be some truth to it once you get there.

I have faith that things will work out like they should.

the thing is that you've got so many international IMG's, FMG's, etc... applying for the same residency programs...

People seem to forget what a U.S. MD is worth now... I'm not sure what most M1's are saying nowadays here on SDN, but the first two years are worthless.

Pass the first two years, do well in the last two years, and you're set. You really are. 🙂

It's so much better to hear this advice in the context of this thread rather than in some of the craziness that goes on outside these walls. 👍

I guess I won't hold it against you that you go to the school that rejected me post interview.

Pass the first two years + learn enough to rock Step 1? Is this correct?

You know, I once heard that 50% of everything you read about on SDN is BS. But honestly, I think it's more like 85%. It's a shame.

But then again, it's pure psychology. People want to think and want to convince themselves that they are doing the right thing. Whether it's DPM, DDS, DMD, DO, etc... everyone needs to reassure themselvees that they've taken the right step...

Speaking of that, tell us more about OSU, will you?

that's 50% of it... here's an example:

I don't remember the numbers exactly, but lets say the first two years are worth 30 credit hours a piece. The third year is always worth more than that (if not about 1.5x the first year). Then comes 4th year which is worth atleast one of the first two years. Put that along with a decent step one score, and remember that most residency directors don't give two craps about the first two years (at least most of them) and I really don't see how you would have any issues landing a decent residency with a U.S. MD.

It's really not as bad as people here make it sound.

yeah i think i was looking at a sample of the "dean's letter" online somewhere and it seemed like only a sentence or two was mentioned about pre-clinical years

That's why so many schools are shortening pre-clinicals and going totally P/F. It just doesn't matter as much.

Some are not only doing p/f but they've even eliminated rankings for the first two years. And that's a great thing - you either know the science or you don't.

Third year is what makes you or breaks you (at least in my opinion), because that's where you need to interact with people, wake your ass up at 4 a.m., and try to be friendly while doing your job (half asleep).

But again, I'm an M1, and my opinion about all this is after some long conversations with good friends of mine who are about to graduate or who just started clinicals. No personal experience.

Ugh, all this medical school talk makes me anxious and increases my hate for my Biochem test tomorrow. I'm so tired of undergrad classes.

med school biochem was so much cooler... not easier, but cooler... a lot cooler...

anyways, fourteeners, I'm off to bed... good luck with everything... PM me if you need anything... :luck:

Rejected from UC Bay Area today. I step closer to figuring out where I'm gonna go.

sorry to hear that man. you have some killer acceptances though 👍 (plus ucla will probably come knocking)

The snow isn't sticking enough in NYC. I desperately need a snow day..hopefully I will wake up to a miracle.:xf:

Sorry about the rejection JJ 🙁

I haven't seen the new Lost episode either... Hopefully I'll get a chance to watch it later on today.

Stupid waking up at 4 am because of this stupid sinus infection.

Sick of being sick.

get well soon! (also, i can't believe there's no health-related smiley on this forum! i feel like there should be a pill-popping smiley or something)

lost is getting more ridiculous by the second...i won't give anything away though about last night heh.....i'll end up catching up on theories today since i don't have work due to "inclement weather"....for now it's back to sleep 🙂

Still can't sleep. Gah! And it's apparently going to blizzard on us today. Seriously, this year sucks so far.

I am glad I have another person to talk Lost with though 🙂

We had some snow flurries this morning! Just a snowflake here and there though, nothing to get too excited about...

I bet our admins crushed someones snowday dreams this morning. We got a several emails from the undergrad saying school's cancelled.... and an then an hour later an email from the med school admins saying ignore those! Med school doesn't cancel classes for this crap.

Yeah, the first big snow here the school sent out a "the college of medicine will NEVER close because of weather" email. Got it.

Ouch 🙁 I wouldn't be able to live without poptarts occasionally.

I know you've told me in the past, but why did you go veg? Was it health? Personal beliefs?

It started from having to be involved in animal based research. I was handling it OK at first, but the day I actually had to kill a rat myself was the last straw. I couldn't eat meat anymore (and I also didn't last in that lab for long after that.)

I didn't really have any plans to do it long term, i just took a break from meat because i was grossed out after the rat incident. but then i started losing weight, which made me happy. and i figured it would be a smart health move for me too (diabetes runs in my family.) and i also thought it could be my little way of apologizing to all the animals who die in the name of medical research. i do think that it is a necessary evil, you cant really do certain research without animals. but i realized i definitely don't NEED them for nutritional value. so in order to thank them for selflessly sacrificing themselves in the name of science, i don't eat them because i CAN live without that 🙂 thats how it all happened and now it's been two years and i am in no hurry to switch back. i think in general the veg market is exploding right now. fake meat products are getting better all the time, and lots of food brands are switching their products to be gelatin free (skittles did!) so I am holding out for pop tarts too 🙂 of course i think its easier, living in Chicago, because there's a pretty big Indian population so there's already a big demand for veg food that the stores are trying to satisfy. i think it would be a lot harder for me if I lived in a smaller midwest town (although even the small towns are catching up quick.) it's great 😀

That's really cool! You're right, it is pretty much impossible in tiny Midwestern towns, especially with cafeteria food, but that's great for you! 👍 After killing many, many mice in the lab I worked in 2 years ago, I can definitely see where you're coming from.

i was amazed to see Quorn products (in my opinion the best fake meat) at Hy-Vee when visiting my parents for Christmas . . . are you a Hy-Vee shopper?? 🙂

I drove my roommate to taco bell last night and the drive thru lady gave us 33 sauce packets.

Great story, I know

Great story, I know

I drove through McDonald's one time and my neighbor was the manager on duty. He saw me and started bombarding ranch sauch for the chicken strips into my car - lasted me for months.

It's the best choice right now since Chick-fil-A is temporarily closed along with my favorite coffee place. 😡

Stupid union construction that's been going on since my 2nd semester and it won't be finished until after I graduate. 😡 😡

They're switching out our Taco Bell. I hope that we get an Inn N Out, but it won't matter since any change that happens won't occur until I leave.

Yall's union/student center thingy is awesome. 👍

Hahah Yeah. I like it, but I'm sure they'd been working on it for a while. We had a huge temporary tent-thingy (that we called "The Bubble") when I first started here. They finished our student center sometime during my 2nd year.
