Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Harry Potter has a permanent mark on Berkeley's campus, and it appeared shortly after Book 6.

I took this picture in Pimentel, Berkeley's 2nd largest lecture hall. It's up there every time you walk out.

I'm not sure what it was before someone changed it to "not". maybe "now"?

Maybe at the end of the summer, I'll give my computer a nice cleaning of everything. It just seems like I've had too many close calls in the last 6 months. That way, it'll run faster for the school year. Wonder how much that'll cost...
See everybody tomorrow - I should be on here almost all day since I'm off.

cool! Welcome to the thread and the SDN!👍

Thanks. 😀

:welcome: Best of luck this cycle!! You just took your MCAT, huh? (Yes, I'm a mdapps stalker. :meanie:) When do you get your scores?

Thanks. 😀 Yes, I took it on July 2nd. I'm so glad it's over. I really hope I don't have to take it again. I think the scores come out on Aug 4th.

yeah!

ps, redonk - we're mcat date buddies!

Awesome. I'm sure we'll get many nightmares and hallucinations about what score we might have gotten in the next couple of weeks. lol

You know, ksmi, if you're still posting now you might have a crappy seat for Harry Potter (which by the way I just got home from seeing early 🙂).
People were lining up in the lobby at 7pm!!! Crazies.
I have no new secondaries today, just Vanderbilt's email.
I vow to finish my 2 tomorrow.

I had fine seats. Didn't get to the theater til like 11:20. Now, I'm home.

Yeah, it was good. I didn't think it was quite as epic as the book, though.
Still a great movie and continuation of the HP series.
I just think my expectations were too high for it, since the 6th book is one of my favorite books of all time. Of course, I might have confused some things I thought were in the 6th book that were really in the 7th. Stuff gets confusing when you haven't read it in two years, you know?

Totally agree. I liked this more than I liked the 5th movie (but I wasn't a huge fan of the 5th book either - I mean obviously a fan, but not my fave). It's been awhile since I read the 6th book though. Time to reread and then see the movie again! I'm sure I'll dislike the movie more after comparing it so closely with the book. The books are SOOOOOOO amazing.

Me too, just complete emails. It's a more welcoming sight.

for the LORs, did you just enter your university name in the evaluator slot for your premed committee letter??

I don't have a committee letter. I think I entered my individual letter writer names.

waiting for UPenn's with bated breath...

haha actually I've got real work to do today and I'm seeing HP tonight, so if I had to choose a day without secondaries, today would be it 😀

question for you guys:

I've been working in a lab this summer since mid-May putting in 50+ hours weekly. Im done August 18th. i really need a good letter from my PI; when do you guys think i should ask him for one? should i wait till august when i leave? or should i ask now? within a couple weeks? i wanna find the right time that not only maximizes the amount of time hes known me/thus can write about me, while giving him sufficient time to write it.

thoughts?

my strategy was not the best, but I worked in a lab for 18 months, asked my PI for a letter a week before I left the state, and it worked out. He just asked for a resume, etc. and had it to me within the month. Since you're looking for a tighter turn-around, it might behoove you to ask 2 weeks out...depends on a) how busy your PI is w/ grants, papers, etc. and b) how responsive s/he is on turn-around times.

I think its too early for a LOR but if you really need it, i dont think it would hurt to ask, the longer you wait the better as most PIs I know wouldnt write a letter after only 2 months or so of work. I always asked any letter writer this question somewhere along the lines. "Do you feel you can write me a strong letter?" Its to the point and makes sure you know where you stand. I think that made my decisions pretty easy on who to ask for letters in the end. The ones who said no i just didnt ask to write me a letter.

good morning kittens of 2014. i just checked the amcas verification thread and it looks like it's at about 20 days . . . if it stays around that, i'll be verified the same day i get mcat scores (21st!! yeek.) it can't come fast enough. i keep having score dreams, most of which are not good. although recently i dreamed i got an 11 on PS. no big deal to all you mathfaces, but if i got an 11 on PS i'd crap a brick of joy.

on another note, i wont have time to see HP6 til tomorrow so no spoilers!!!! 🙂

good advice. thanks guys. then ill wait 2 weeks and ask around august 4th

You do know the book has been out for 3 or 4 years right

it has???? REALLY! :wow:
just kidding. seriously though, ive read the books. but the movies have to be pretty creative to cram so much storyline into a couple hours, so i know they add/remove/change things for effect. i want that part to be as surprising as possible since the ending isn't really a surprise.

I can't decide if my stomach hurts or if i'm just really hungry. I guess only one way to find out!

Yes! That. 👍👍

So sad Robert Jordan died so early... what a huge loss! 🙁

Yeah, The Wheel of Times was the best. Loved the first three books. Then I kind of gave up midway through the fourth book. It was getting repetitive. But the Eye of the World, omg. The best fantasy book ever written.

Oooh, Wheel of Time. Didn't know it was popular enough for an abbreviation. My mom used to read those books and was extremely pissed when Jordan died.
That's what happens when you don't plan out the entire storyline from the beginning (like JK Rowling did).
Stephen King almost had that happen to him during his Dark Tower series. He wrote the first 3 books, almost died from a car wreck (I think), had extreme writer's block and didn't think he would finish the series. He eventually did and it's an amazing series. It's not your typical Stephen King - more fantasy/epic-esque, I guess. I don't like normal Stephen King, really. Except for The Stand.

I feel like, though, Jordan streched the series out way too long. I wish they would make a movie of Wheel of Time. It would be truly epic.

Yeah, there's epic and then there's "let me try and milk this epicness until I can't think of anything else to write about and then I die"
I mean, how many books can you just walk around? Reminds me of LotR:
Book 1: walk
Book 2: walk - oh look, tress
Book 3: walk and drop ring in
btw, I love LotR - I'm just poking some fun.

Dude, you must have forgotten how intense Frodo's internal struggle is.

i'm as a big an HP fan as anyone else, but i'm not gonna lie. my friend was talking and used the word "snogging" and i wanted to sock him in the face. lol

i'm surprised they kept that in the american versions of the books. IIRC, they changed some other words- like 'sweater' instead of jumper, 'field' instead of pitch . . . etc. i guess 'snogging' is too funny to swap out.

edited to add: DO they use snogging in the american books? maybe i'm getting that confused with the movies.

Apparently when my school said that they'd have letters of evaluation written in 4-6 weeks after they're requested, they meant 2 weeks. AMCAS just got it today. I can finally send out applications! HUZZAH!

Good afternoon people! I just woke up an hour ago from a long night watching HBP.

Books 3+ are the best.

No way. Books 1,2,3 are untouchable. Simply the best.

I mean, in Book 1, towards the end when Rand finally finds he can wield the One Power and uses it against Aginor, I swear, my heart was pounding so hard. It was just so epic, magnificent.
