Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Vaguely interesting, but it's applied math. Not my strong suit.

Strangely enough, I'm a pure math major, but my thesis is in applied math. How this makes sense, I'm not sure, but it's a continuation of research I've been doing for the past 2 years.

"Applied" math... isn't that an oxymoron?

Eh, it's still pretty pure in that it still can't exist in the real world.

what, am I your slave?

Yes. Go get me brownies from my kitchen.

Some mathematicians have thought so.

"The ‘real' mathematics of the ‘real' mathematicians . . . is almost wholly ‘useless'." -G.H. Hardy

Unfortunately, he also said this:

"No one has yet discovered any warlike purpose to be served by the theory of numbers or relativity, and it seems unlikely that anyone will do so for many years."

Haha and once again, I'm happy that I stopped my math experience at the "minor" level. I'll consider that a win 😀

But seriously, there was a guy in my math department that was doing pretty cool applied math research (at least I thought so). I wish it wasn't almost a year since I heard his spiel, otherwise I'd fill you guys in; basically, he used some advanced math to look at MRIs and tell whether or not the geometry over certain structures were "impossible", and if it was impossible, you know that you got your results due to the patient moving. Yes, I know that story was a few details short of being moderately interesting for you math heads. Sorry.

I guess maybe it wasn't "real" math, though 🙁

Hmmmm, I wonder if he did anything else other than calculate MRI artifact. That is easily detectable by eye, so I'm guessing there is more to it. It's a shame you don't remember, because that would be pretty interesting to hear about.

Yeah, sorry... I know there's at least one or two details that I'm losing to the sands of time 🙁

Don't sweat it, man. I've been working with MRI and fMRI data for ~4 years and I don't remember the stuff I did with it last Friday... So a year ago... No way. That info better be in my notes or it's gone.

getting into the city today for downstate interview tomorrow!

goodluck to everyone this week with their inbox candies. sorry havent been on much; life's getting in the way 🙄

WashU invite!!! 😀

Side note: who sends out invites at 3 in the morning?????

congrats 😀

I think they send out batches -- then send the emails when there's not much activity going on on their servers so they're less likely to encounter emailing issues...either that or they're vampires... :scared:

morning!🙂

blue-now you have to do it just to go against ksmi's orders!

ksmi-congrats on wash u!😀 that is a crazy time for the email to come though!

redrower-have fun in nyc and a great interview!!

Speaking of vampires.... True Blood Finale this Sunday! YAY I can finish the season before interviews take over my weekends (starting the 17th... :scared:)

Question: For those who have utilized student hosting (or those who plan on it) was it worth it (outside of money I mean)? How was it? I mean, I'd really love to get a student host for my Upstate interview, but I'm afraid that I'll just be an awkward "Oh here's where you sleep, here's the bathroom, kthxbai" and then I'm kinda just hanging out with a person/people who're too busy to look at me twice.

What do you guys think?

EDIT: GRATS! Ksmi!!

Just received a call from VCU apologizing again for the rejection mistake. I've definitely gotta look into this school more.

they want me to send a transcript at the end of fall 09, damn.

nymc. Oh, btw, I'm still thinking about your offer.

ah i see, i haven't heard anything from them yet. and it's a good offer so you should definitely put some serious thought into it🙂

don't do it Blue!!! Pats FTW!!!

I wore my Welker jersey under my volunteer uniform at georgetown on Monday -- then I realized I was a week early and they don't play the Bills til NEXT monday. heartbroken doesn't begin to cover it 🙁 😛

Yay True Blood. I'm still an episode behind, though.

Yes, student hosts are worth it, I think. They wouldn't volunteer if they were gonna be mean. They are still busy, but still nice.

And thanks everyone!!!

:luck: tomorrow redrower!

I'm in too. I don't even have 5 interviews.

ditto

So, I got my first rejection a week or so ago from VCU. Just checked my e-mail and found out that that was a system error. Apparently I'm not rejected??

And interview invite to NYMC!

congrats! when is yours? i'm 9/23.

i am waiting for the august 6th mcat results to show up. after that i can properly join this party.

heyyyyyy! you're back!

GEORGETOWN INTERVIEW :soexcited: :soexcited:

Finally got some love from the place literally less than a mile from where I sit right now...

Right on. How many is that now?

This would be 7.

I'm getting so stressed about missing band practice. How messed up is that? I don't care about missing class (which I should); I only care about practice. I have managed to get all my interviews but 1 on an off-week though. I'm doing the best I can to not miss important practice.

yeah that's completely understandable -- I'd hope they would be ok with it!

initially, that was one of my main reasons for wanting to take time off before applying. Had band practice until November (though we were a scramble band -- not much practice time during the week), and sports practice Monday-Saturday from September to May. My coach got all pissed off at me when i missed practice for Jury duty during exam period when practice was optional... 🙄

congrats on 7!! :luck: 😀 :luck:

I was referring to my Vandy host. My Baylor student host was super mean. 😛

 YOU'RE the mean one.

I mean, how much do you have to practice to twirl a stick? 😛

student hosts are worth it...mine was kinda boring as he had a anatomy exam he was studying for but still, the money alone was worth it. Kinda sucks sleeping ona couch but . at the very least ure host would be able to give you a lot of good info on the schools and tips for the interviews etc etc. Anytime theres a studnet host id take it if it was me 🙂

just got an email from hotels.com (booked my HoJo reservation through them a week ago) and they said they're having a huge 9/9/09 sale -- over 750 hotels for $99 or less. Specifically, they cited 3+ star hotels in NYC for $47 and up.

fyi if you're interviewing at a non-hosting school.

congrats! when is yours? i'm 9/23.

Haven't scheduled it yet. It's definitely going to be later in the cycle. I'm waiting for Nov dates to open up.

I'm so worried about the classes I'm missing. I don't know what's going on.

Fortunately I'm only missing one day of class. I'm still worried though because not having weekends will definitely affect my studying.
