Copernicus! Awesome choice of name. Reminds me of Doc Brown's first name for his dog (before Einstein was around).


Am I the only one who's first (and only science class at med school) is biochem/genetics and all of the bio kids have a HUGE 1-up on the non-sci majors...? Kinda shaking in my boots the night before my test. I keep telling myself not to judge my percentile rank on the test, but it's hard to feel like I'll be really disappointed if I'm in the bottom half. 🙁

I'm a Bio major and I still feel like the majority of people in my class have a leg up on me with a lot of this stuff. I didn't take a lot of the typical pre-med classes at LSU (embryology, histology, neuroscience, and I completely disregarded biochem) and almost everybody else did, so I guess that puts me at a disadvantage.
 
nah dont worry about it, med school goes by a completely different pace and you'll pick that **** up in no time

we have a ****load of clinical medicine class and i get surprised at how much people know about that ****, but i think i hold my own too. the best part is that when someone learns a new word/idea they keep repeating it over and over. bilateral atrophy, troponin, tachycardia etc
 
Sweet, we get free lunch tomorrow because of the medical instrument sale. But they aren't talking me into buying anything, I'll figure that out myself.

I definitely need to ask second years if we need that stuff or not. That's a lot of money I could save or spend.

I wasn't really sure about what to do, so I think I'm going to drive over to my parents' house soon and bury him there. I feel that's the best thing to do.

Yeah, part of me wishes I had taken anatomy, even if it was computer based. The reason I didn't was because I didn't want to wake up for a 9am class. Worth it? We'll see.

Eh, I don't think it's worth it. After only a week of classes, I already know what I'm going to do differently this week. I've realized that re-listening to difficult lectures actually helps me, and that I shouldn't study for more than 4 hrs straight at a time. Otherwise, I just get dumber if I keep on pushing myself.

I think that sounds like a really good idea.
 
the learning curve for anatomy is quick. in about 3 or 4 labs, you will completely get a hang of it. radiograph packets >>>>>>

you know that **** then you know your muscles and bones. you have your nerves (and art/veins) to worry about, about if you have/make a good table of innervations, origins/supplies, it shouldnt be a problem. dont over resource yourself
 
i stopped going to lectures last week and decided that going to them makes me more productive, which disappoints me 🙁
 
things i find helpful

binders for all your classes and subclasses
portable (powercord-less) external hd that is highly organized so you can print out slides and organize lecture videos
 
This year I'm only attending the first lecture of each class, and the lectures my PI gives. Gives me something like only 16 hours of my time wasted🙂.
 
yea im gonna stop taking notes on my netbook, that **** is a huge distraction.

we dont have anatomy or embryo lectures to go to, but we have to watch them at home. trying to watch that + go through other lectures by myself = definite distraction and fail

I might actually be able to study at my computer now, because I have 2. My school computer is kind of slow so it's only used for school and so far that separation is working really well.

Btw, I'm on my home computer right now. :laugh:
 
maybe its just me but i totally retract my netbook plus desktop comment.

i would have gone with a mac desktop and a macbook (13 or 15 or whattever, maybe a macbook pro). if i get another grant, ill probably indulge in that
 
People take so many freaking notes. The people sitting next to me are just typing away furiously when I'm just listening and paying attention while also realizing most of what the lecturer is saying is on the slide. If he makes an important note, I'll type it.

Everyone is crazy. Or maybe I'm just too laid back?

dude there are kids with anatomy coloring books with different colored pens, each color has a certain smell to it so you can remember different parts by smell and color or some****. how intense is that

Just the stethoscope, and maybe the blood pressure thing, you probably won't need the rest of the stuff for a while, if ever.

Yup, I wish I'd known that before I bought like 800 bucks worth of medical equipments we were "required" to buy. First day of orientation, the M2+'s tell us that we actually don't need ~$600 of that stuff 😡

So I've heard, but we do have a different professor this year and from what I've heard he's a lot more fair. Last year I heard they got a lot of random crap on the first exam and nobody knew what the hell they are.

hah...i wish i could say i'm surprised, but i've heard some classmates talk about it 😳
 
You never really get adjusted in med school. First year it's just getting used to how things work, and anatomy throws a huge wrench into getting adjusted. Second year, there's generally more pathophys, and then boards dominate your life, 3rd year you're like WTF, and as soon as it feels like you're actually starting to become a valuable team member, they send you off to another rotation and 4th year, you have one foot out the door...
 
That's intense. I suppose that people do tend to remember things by scent, but I doubt they are going to smell their way through med school and clinical years. "Oh, which muscle is that? Excuse me, do you mind if I smell it so I can remember the name?"

Though I do remember the scent of our cadaver very well. His is very distinct from the smell of the other cadavers. It's a bit odd. Then again, so is his color.

I could see how that works.

What about getting adjusted in the spring without anatomy? That seems doable.
 
I just found out this Wed/Thurs' lectures aren't going to be on this Fri's exam. My freak-out level has substantially dropped.

Maybe. Anatomy and not anatomy are very different subjects though. Idk, to be honest I didn't think the first two years were all that bad, except for the last semester when studying for step 1 and studying at the same time sucked. 3rd year is fun in terms of what you're doing, it's time consuming and the grading sucks but it is what it is.
 
I guess I'm calling it a night. Today sucked. I hope this week is better.

I am so completely not prepared for anatomy lab tomorrow, but whatever. If the professors ask me questions, screw them, I don't care. I'll study this week. I just really don't feel like it today.
 
yea you are gonna feel like that when you pre-review. you'll start to see that lab it self clears things up a ****load. dont worry about it at all (for real, i feel/felt the same way everysingle time before anatomy), you'll find out that its not bad at all. seriously though, i dont know how to explain it, but it works out really well. its like the verbal portion of the mcat.
 
and also there will be gunner kids that unintentionally make you feel bad to make them selves look better or try to do your work for you. **** them, after a while, you can figure out who knows their ****, who studies a lot, who figures it out pretty quickly and who are just trying to impress but doesn't have a clue wtf they are talking about
 
i think the first 2 weeks are productive if you use them to organize yourself, develop and maintain a study pattern
 
Don't worry too much preparing a lot before lab itself. Just try to learn as much as you can.

I'll be honest, I hated anatomy with a f-ing passion. It's been the worst thing about med school by far and it's not close. I thought I would like dissection more than prosection but I don't think that at all now haha. That said, you can learn A LOT from anatomy and keep it forever (although IMO more so from the classroom than from the lab) It is what it is, so make the best of it I guess! Def wear scrubs or something you don't care about though!
 
I have exams every 2-3 weeks. First ones are on Fri.

Good night everyone. I'm going to try really hard this week not to fall asleep during the first hour.
