If you want to do rad onc, consider a research year.

It's hard to have two things so different like RadOnc and Rads as options.

Uh why? Med onc is 6 years and rad onc is 4, even with a research year you'll be done earlier.

I just don't feel like taking a year off before residency to do research. Plus, with the prelim/transitional year it would end up being the same amount of time.

I'm not a huge research fan, especially right now while I'm in school, even though rad onc is very research heavy. I'm open to doing a research away elective next year but I feel my time would be better served doing an away audition rotation. I could be wrong, though.
 
Finishing up ambulatory medicine this week. IM/Pulmonary edges a bit closer to ENT for the lead.

I start inpatient medicine on Monday. After FM, psych, neuro, and ambulatory, I feel like "real third-year" is finally starting. That's not to say I didn't work hard over the last 4+ months, but I feel like the next few months (inpatient medicine and surgery at notoriously brutal hospitals) will be a whole different animal.

No it's not. Rad onc is 1+3 = 4, same as ophtho, derm, anesthesia, PM&R, neurology; every field requiring a prelim/TY other than rads.

If you don't have a research year honestly you're just wasting your time applying rad onc. A research elective or away isn't going to help you at all. It's not like you're really going to publish in a month.

Mean # of abstracts, publications, presentations for matched applicants = 8.3 (highest of any specialty). Also a quarter of applicants are md/phd and 1/3 have at least a masters.

ID was one of my ambulatory clinics. It's just primary care for HIV +ve people. 😴
 
Hello fellow 3rd year sufferers. Actually its not that bad for me, hope you guys are doing well too 🙂
Starting surgery on wed. Looked at that syllabus and its by far the most ridiculous rotation in terms of requirements and assignments and lack of sleep so far. Ah well, at least I can expect the rounds not to resemble some kind of 'cold murder case' where everyone acts like dissecting details down to the atoms is going to change the fact that the patient had a stroke and 3 hrs (4.5 whatever) have come and gone.
Hope the other 3 students on my team are fun to work with, first time rotating with any of them. Don't eff this up for me people!! lol

Started surg today, mornings are gonna be way too early
 
I really like this clinics thing my school has us do for 2 weeks. Chance to get a little exposure into just about every IM subspeciality. I liked Pulm more than I thought I would, Cards less than I thought I would, Heme/Onc and Endocrine were kinda of cool. I think the only two ones I won't really get any clinic exposure is Infectious dz and Allergy. Though I suppose I'll see ID more on the wards anyway.

You will. ID is just antibiotics and AIDS stuff. Not as House-like as you think.

I start my clinics next week woot. Did you do a new subspecialty each day or each morning/afternoon?

Are you in BR for clinics? If so, then yeah it's pretty much a different clinic every morning and afternoon. You get two afternoons off a week, unless there's lecture. You'll have a few of the clinics twice (cards, gen. med, and neuro).

I'm not really sure how the clinics elsewhere work.

I have heme/onc and GI for consults at UH, should be ok.
 
Inpatient medicine at the VA.

I'm enjoying it, but I don't think general internal medicine is for me. I feel like I'm babysitting lab values while the specialists come in and do their thing. Too much social work.

Internal medicine is still in the cards (esp. pulmonary), but I'm looking forward to my surgical rotation more and more.
 
Day off tomorrow. Need a breather. Medicine has been a difficult, scut-filled quagmire. We drown our patients in meds, but no one gets better. They march inexorably towards the end-stage of their end-stage CKD/CHF/COPD/etc.
 
That is how I felt about medicine as well. I'm almost done with all my clinical rotations and I was actually shocked at how much of Medicine (all of it, not just IM) was like this. Don't get me wrong, obviously doctors make a difference in their patients' lives and we can truly cure some diseases... But not as much as I thought (or dreamed?).*

Ah well. That's too much reflection for this early in the morning. Also - hi everyone! Glad to see you guys are all hanging in there 🙂
 
3rd week of surgery. I don't feel like its so bad in terms of actual work, it is the personalities that just so ridiculous sometimes. My immediate team is awesome though.
I wish we got either more surgeries or fewer med students on the team. Most of my cases so far are on the same freaking guy (long story, pretty cool/terrifying/exhausting) and he gets closed with staples and such, so all in all I literally placed 3 interrupted sutures. At least they were damn beautiful horizonal mattress sutures.

I loved neurology. I would go into it in a heart beat if you could actually do anything for most of those patients.

I've reached a nice steady-state of love-hate with IM right now. I like it enough that I don't dread getting out of bed every day. I dislike it enough that I am counting the days.

ERCP today was pretty nifty. Two gallstones that were sitting in there for 2 years got removed.

This was more a of bump than anything else.

Anyone ever round with docs from a different school? I rounded with some Tulane docs today for GI. Not really any different... just thought it was an interesting occurrence... maybe not if it's common :laugh:
 
My Neuro eval is going to be the stupidest thing ever. It's only a two week rotation and the site I'm at is off on Thurday and Friday plus we have Thanksgiving holiday next week. Which means I get all of 5 days to be evaluated by 3 different attendings. The one that usually does the evaluations saw me for two days and is now on vacation. Ugh this is annoying. I feel screwed regardless.

Our two-weekers are pass/fail, thank God.

Finished with inpatient medicine at the VA. On to inpatient medicine at a community hospital.

Medicine at the VA -- great experience, invaluable learning opportunity, but I never want to do it again.

Got broken up with right before surgery rotation started and couldn't focus at all on studying this last month no matter how hard I pushed. I am 1000% sure I am going into something surgical after actually working on the service, so I need to bust this shelf up. What do!?!?

I'm sorry 🙁 I keep the faith though - you'll make it through and be an awesome cut-n-runner!

Thanks guys. It really means a lot. Thankfully I had a great team on surgery that helped me keep my sh_t together. It still sucks a lot right now, but at least now I actually believe that there's a point to pushing through to my dreams even if I am alone when I arrive there, instead of just having the intellectual appreciation of the fact that didn't make me feel any better.
Still, I feel so behind on this material, scared of the shelf.

Yea, what I've realized is I'll always be behind for shelf exams :-( but it all tends to work out anyway... Mostly.

And I'm sure you'll find a nice boy or girl to share your life with. My god sister likes to remind me - it only has to work out once 🙂
 
Not a fan of having medicine wards the last four weeks before the Medicine and Neuro shelf exams. Seems I got screwed two blocks in a row with the order of stuff.
