Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
just received an "Expect a secondary!!" email from UAMS (Univ. of Arkansas). Typically, I think those emails are just a tease (Vandy, UPenn, Emory, I'm looking at you), but this one was just so entertaining I had to share:

Dear Medical School Applicant:

We are pleased to know that you are making application to the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Medicine. You should receive a Supplemental Application in the mail from us very soon. We are about to matriculate 174 spankin' brand new Freshmen and are excited about the next four years of their academic lives. But as we plan to turn that corner, we are already looking ahead to the class you hope to join. Please know that the Office of Admissions stands ready to help you through these sometimes convoluted steps of applying to med school.

Word of advice: just because your uncle's second cousin, twice removed on your mother's side, once knew a taxi cab driver whose youngest sister passed through Little Rock and talked to a Wal Mart clerk who met a customer who claimed to have applied to medical school and "he said...." Don’t believe it. If you have any questions about the process, please contact us directly. We're here to serve you as you wind your way through the application process at the College of Medicine.

We will make offers of acceptance to 174 of you. We will also put a significant number of students on our alternate list. Additionally, we will consider a number of non-Arkansas residents for acceptance, providing their MCAT scores and GPAs are above our averages. Please know that we invite competive non-Arkansas applications, typically with MCAT scores at 28 and above and GPAs at 3.6 and above.

Furthermore, if you are Native American and are recorded in the tribal rolls, please email me and I'll send you our policy that allows for specific tribal members to pay in-state tuition if accepted as a non-Arkansas resident.

Now, a bit of housekeeping for the hired help. Please double check your complete preferred mailing name and address to insure that you have used standard English practices (that means upper and lower case letters!) in your contact information. We generate letters, mailing labels, filing labels, acceptance offers, financial aid award letters, etc., from this database. You really don't want your acceptance letter to arrive with your name in all lower case letters. We appreciate your attention to this small detail. It saves us hours in manually making these corrections.

If you haven't already reviewed our catalog, please do so at www.uams.edu/com/comcat/. We wish you the best in your pursuit of academic excellence. Press on!

😍 😍 I'm in love 😍 😍

That's a cool letter. How very informal, it's refreshing to see.

dude alabama is sweet " just because your uncle's second cousin, twice removed on your mother's side, once knew a taxi cab driver whose youngest sister passed through Little Rock and talked to a Wal Mart clerk who met a customer who claimed to have applied to medical school and "he said...." Don’t believe it." that part had me :roflcopter::roflcopter:. I want to add them now lol.

That is very unprofessional, and I would never talk to a patient with that kind of attitude.

jk jk, funny letter!

I just didn't want you to go adding UAB really fast when you actually wanted to add Arkansas. I know you're crazy like that.

it seems like a lot of people are dropping Case, why?

on an unrelated note, will AMCAS send me an email to let me know I'm verified? i'd like to stop neurotically checking the AMCAS site and the AMCAS thread.

Case is too high-tiered for me, I realized.

They send you an email.

Yes, they email you.

They also email when your letters are received, in case you're wondering for later.

Also, while we're on the Case Western subject. I think I've found one of my new top choices. That school looks amazing.

Its not that case isnt a great school i would love to go there, but its too top tier like blue said, I dont have a realistic chance there, dont know why i added it to be honest. Also the secondary is kinda long, just seems too numbers oriented for my taste .

That letter from Arkansas is fabulous.

Man, I need to stop reading the application threads. All they do is frustrate me when people that were verified weeks after me get secondaries while I stare at an UNDER REVIEW screen 🙁

sitting on 8 secondaries, submitted 10, waiting on 5 screens, and 15 unscreened 😀

just got another tease email--UNC this time.

Random Fact: I'm currently enjoying some delicious STRAWBERRY PEANUT BUTTER M&Ms. Is DC a testing area for new flavors? I never see these in Raleigh.

Oi, that sounds good.

surprisingly false 🙂

interesting but on the whole pretty good...

now facing an ethical dilemma of whether to skip out on my volunteering gig tonight an hour early to go on a date...😳 I probably could arrive a half hour early, but still...

I would go on the date.👍

blue were you able to get the suny upstate 2ndary to work?🙁

i vote date. go early to volunteering. tell supervisor you got a hot date and ask nicely for a little leniency. say youll work more another day 😀

yeah, that's how I'm leaning. I'm going on vacation on Wednesday afternoon, so I was trying to build hours today/tomorrow -- got to work before 7 this morning 😴 so if I leave at 4, I should only lose 20 minutes of time.

don't have a supervisor, so no one would really even notice I bet--just that I'd be a few minutes short on my log...next monday I get back from my vacay around 11am...I guess I'll head over early and try to make up some lost time...still feel kind of guilty--the place has had so much turnover in the past 6 months so it sometimes feels like I'm the only volunteer who knows what all to do 🙁

Edit: Chart doesn't work. Revising.

Nah, that's really all that matters. However, the curve for the chart is way off. There needed to be a much steeper curve as the likelihood of sex approached 0 and the cost of the date approached 100.

I'm confused. You should go on the date if it costs $90 and there 0% chance of sex, but not if it costs $5 and sex is 100% guaranteed? And you only go on a date with guaranteed sex if it's free?

I think your graph should go from the origin to the point (100,100). Not from (0,100) to (100,0).

True, it should more of a sinusoidal curve. MS Paint doesn't do those well. It should be fairly level at the top, a steep curve down, and a fairly level as it goes to the end.

So it should be a titration curve.

Haha, I swear I'm not THAT cynical about dating.

However, I did once spend $85 to take a girl out to a French restaurant, which was followed by a HANDSHAKE and a text message saying that she didn't think it was going to work out.

If it was a first date, you spent wayyyyy too much.

Unless a first date is going really well (i.e. lasts 8 hours), there's no way I'd end up spending $85. And yes, I had an 8 hour 1st date a couple years ago.

8 hour first date...now that's impressive. How did that work out?

i agree that hella nice restaurants are too risky for the first date, might even turn the girl off a little?

ouch, that stinks! My history of first dates have generally consisted of going dutch at sports bars (maybe that's why my track record is less than stellar?). Tonight is a freebie -- outdoor movie (they brought back screen on the green!!)
