I'm going to wing all of mine. I'll prepare by looking over my CV/Application and the school I'm interviewing at, but outside of that I'm going to just be myself.

Oh dear lord. I know a first year who wants to drop out of med school already. I hope that's not me this time next year.

If you're not feeling it now then by this time next year you definitely won't be, but after spending two years trying to get in I highly doubt you'll be in his shoes this time next year.

Is your buddy not happy or just overwhelmed? If he's genuinely not happy about his career choice, then he should get now while the getting is good. Otherwise he'll be a very unhappy doc with tons of debt.

A few random thoughts:

1) Why is cookie monster robbing banks now?

2) My Buffalo interviews went well. Very excited and happy. Liked the school and thought they have some GREAT things slated for future students (new buildings, thinking about DROPPING ANY PHYSICS requirement for admission 😱 ...)

3) I have Georgetown on Monday and need to get a hotel, but have never been to any near the school. Any suggestions?

He had two complaints. One of which I think is valid.

1. He likes research, and he wants to finish his project which he kinda left hanging at the end of this summer.
2. He doesn't want to be in debt. This is a little outrageous. He's in state, and he got some scholarships to help out. He's only going to be like $60-$70k in debt with his MD in hand.

I think he's more of number 1 than number 2, so I can see why he wants out.

He's going to try to get in the back door of our MD/PhD program, so we'll see. I tried that last year from the other end (I had started a PhD), and it didn't work for me. Maybe he'll have better luck.

You know, he may be able to get even more money if he can convince the school that he is thinking about leaving for another. I know someone at a school here in NY who started a PhD, was accepted to the MD program (denied MD/PhD though 😕) and when she threatened to leave for another state she got something like $40,000 in extra money.

there's a hotel on campus connected to the hospital (http://www.georgetownuniversityhospital.org/body.cfm?id=230) and the hospital is right by the med school.

Alternatively, if you can find cheap places in the city near Rosslyn, VA or Dupont Circle, Georgetown Hospital has a free shuttle http://www.georgetownuniversityhospital.org/body_fw.cfm?id=1128

If all else fails, I'd offer up my place (2 stops from rosslyn), but that might be perceived as creepy, (unintentional creepiness, but creepy ntl) 😛

Damn, Boy! Look at you go! Too many mock interviews is kind of like eating a dozen sugarfree doughnuts... Sure they're doughnuts, they have all the negative side of fried doughnuts, leave you feeling stuffed, can make you fat, and you feel guilty afterwards, but none of the positive, because they still taste like ass...

3) Nope. Haven't a clue, but I have heard they do have MSx students willing to board people for the night out there.

I can see that. I have heard the back door MD/PhD is much much easier to get. I was considering it, but then I realized I am old and just don't care that much about research anymore.

I'm glad to know that you tried to the "other end" last year... It sounds a little bit more comfortable than the back door approach... 😛

buffalo thinks physics is expendable, huh? i agree, maybe i should apply there. i mean, i already took it but maybe they would be more forgiving of my physics-related weaknesses (in addition to my lame PS score, my only C in a BCMP course was physics 2 . . . .ughh. dragged down my sci GPA a lot.)

i've been a little interested in buffalo already because i decided i like upstate NY . . . i already applied to rochester and albany. how are they for OOS?

(and happy friday to everyone too!)

Yeah, the Male/Female dynamic there would probably make most women jealous, but I have to say, I wouldn't be all that cool with my wife or gf going to another state and staying with some dude either... :shrug:

Well, they told us that the Physics thing was in the works. Apparently some current med students did some research 😕 about this and convince the admin that the requirement is really outdated for what you actually can apply from the undergraduate Physics courses. They are trying to bring in Statistics though as they believe it is much more useful.

OOS, I really don't know. I do know that about half of the people at my interview were OOS. Interesting group dynamic that day, but I'll wait until after the season to discuss it. 😉

IMHO, people diss Buffalo because of location, but really the city has a GREAT music scene (I'm a musician, trust me on this) and if you can just stand some snow, they handle it well (nothing ever closes).

I would suggest applying if you are putting your hat in the UR and Albany ring anyhow. 👍

I just wanted to let you know that I was just pick-pocketed, it's about to start pouring outside, and I got jumped for my suitcase... I am very much in need of some shelter and a few ladies to tend to my wounds... They could be fatal. *cough* *cough* I'm dying out here...

Remembered that I probably need to read my PS and secondary essays (all of them) a couple of times to remind myself of who I am, since I have been many different sides of myself the last couple of months. :laugh:

i took 2 semesters of stats! and did better in them than in physics. so if the adcoms are really convinced that stats>physics that would be good.

plus, i just got another rejection! U of Chicago 😡 that one definitely hurts more than WFU did. i spent forever writing my (honest) essay about how i love chicago and care about the plight of people who are underserved here. GRRRRR!
