Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
yeah it's definitely a sweet deal, especially since they'll give me a tablet and PDA to use, but it's still quite a bit of money. Especially since I'm already about 80K in debt

and Louisiana, Miss. and Bama (I would think)

OK, didn't know.

I was going to say 😱, but...

...I guess I knew we have it good, but I didn't realize everywhere else was THAT expensive.😳

lol, yeah. My state schools are 30k/year.

I have so much undergrad debt.. It makes me want to cry. lol. What's typical for med school tuition? I always sort of assumed 40K a year tuition

yea the total cost of attending OSU out of state is around 233.3K over 4 years. you get IS tuition after first year. but 3rd year tuition/fees is 10k more for everyone than any other year

Anyone know anything about the NHSC Scholarship for med school? I've been debating it and was wondering if anyone knew someone or had looked into it
I don't know the fine print of it. But I think it's a pretty good deal if 1. You're 100% on primary care, 2. will graduate with significant debt and 3. Are fine with living in a undersirable area.

lol its ok i got a ton of debt to. I think 30k for undergrad. Typical tuition is about 20k for IS and 40k for OOS. Some places are more messed up (cali, ugh) but that normally holds true. Most schools if you are OOS you should think 70k a year total costs.

yes. You have to take out loans for traveling/tests and such which is why i think the price jumps (i think tuition forM3-4 is also higher then the 1st two?)

That's why. Since 3rd year is year round they charge you for 3 semesters instead of two. Which IMO is a joke.

Personally I think tution for clinical years needs to eliminated or drastically reduced. Paying 25k+ to be the hospitals slave is perhaps the biggest scam in higher education.

Where exactly is that money going? The hospital? 😕

speaking of scholarships, you think hugh hefner would pay my med school bills if i told him i'd do 100 procedures for his employees within 4 years after residency/fellowship

lol, you could tell people it's an HHMI -- Hugh Hefner Medical Implant scholarship

DO NOT SPOIL LOST!

Seriously. I probably won't get to watch it until tomorrow since I have an exam in the morning.

I don't think that's right, bb. I think it's 45k the first year, 30k years 2-4, and then 20k for living expenses each year. So that'd be 215k.

Can someone give me a quick explanation of DNA microarrays. I get that you put a mixture of cDNA from 2 different cell types on the plate, but what do they interact with? Do the plates just have a ton of different random DNA sequences on them?

made the switch from Firefox to Google Chrome. we'll see if that's a smart one.

Google Chrome really wasn't too impressive to me. Google and Gmail work faster on it, but... that's about it!

I think I am now added to the private tutor list. Thanks, ksmi!

Maybe this can bring some extra $$$.

No problem! I just suggested you to a girl looking for a Calc tutor. I don't know if she'll contact you since she like emailed a bunch of the tutors, but I tried!!!! 🙂

not random. (usually) you have short oligos physically bound to the plate that are complementary to unique sequences of interest from whatever genome you are studying. thus you can measure relative levels of cDNAs corresponding to those genes/transposons/whatever that you have chosen to be represented on the plate.

you don't need two different cell types or even two different anything. it can simply be a measurement from one sample.

the two different samples being applied is a common way of seeing relative amounts of cDNA. it's usually called comparative genome hybridization in these cases. eg you can compare the cDNA from a tumor and healthy tissue with different colors of florescence.

let's say red for tumor and green for normal. then any locus that "looks" more green than red on the chip is a gene that is downregulated in tumors. any locus more red than green is upregulated in tumors. yellow indicates no change.

bear in mind though, this is simply a measurement of amount. it tells you nothing about causation!

the plates do have a ton of DNA sequences on them. The DNA is not random though, it is specific probes in specific places so they can determine exactly what the cDNA annealed to.

Scapermoya and dr yoda got it. So yes, not random sequences but I think like 25 base pair oligos. Also you can control where you want certain nucleotides to add to increase sequence diversity by shutting off certain "windows" on the microarray and leaving others open from cycle to cycle of nucleotide addition.

What's uppppp 2014. Everybody give me a piece of osu advice. Rather do it here than the school specific thread lol.... They are more or less the same anyways!

Oh yeah! I forgot you also have an upcoming interview there! I will tune in as everyone gives you advice 😀.

uh oh. I see Emory thread is the latest school specific thread to be posted in.
i refuse to go look.
someone look for me!

nope, it goes up to 40k 3rd year. 10k more in tuition/fees

I looked at this a few weeks ago and got ~233k too. I used numbers from here

Does google chrome have some sort of adblock plugin or anything equivalent? I've heard good things about chrome but I need my ads blocked!

I got an "ethical dilemma" type question there, but other than that it's a pretty laid back interview day.

Also, I think the student interview there is really short, so maybe make sure you hit all the important stuff you want to say because they literally discuss each interviewee right after the interviews are done for the day.
