Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm watching the rerun of NBC Dateline the resident program or whatever that aired couple days ago. It's surprising that half of all medical students are females but less than 10% of them become surgeons. Very interesting.

Haha I routinely get confused looks and told that I look too nice to be a trauma surgeon, doubt that I am the only one and sometimes those kinds of comments really stick to you. So no, not surprised.

Yeah I think some decisions went out for nyu past my date. Whatevs

A lot of people tell me I am "too relaxed" and "look too nice" to be a surgeon when I mention I'm interested too haha... Don't really know what to think of thàt

Google Chrome really wasn't too impressive to me. Google and Gmail work faster on it, but... that's about it!

There are good add-ons! That's kind of what sold me. And it runs faster on my computer than firefox does

Good choice. Google chrome is pretty awesome. 🙂

I'm on chrome. I like.

I wonder when they will release their Google Chrome OS.

👍 good choice!

What's uppppp 2014. Everybody give me a piece of osu advice. Rather do it here than the school specific thread lol.... They are more or less the same anyways!

just relax! OSU is all about making you feel comfortable and good. Dean Capers is totally cool and he makes it a point to meet everyone and shake everybody's hand. just be eloquent and be ready to talk about your ECs and other unique qualities you have.

and bobsmith, yes, there's an adblocks plugin! exact same one that they have for firefox I believe

it all sounds like this to me "blah blah blah warble warble warble"
besides...I am not nice. Just ask my mom she will tell you😛

not random. (usually) you have short oligos physically bound to the plate that are complementary to unique sequences of interest from whatever genome you are studying. thus you can measure relative levels of cDNAs corresponding to those genes/transposons/whatever that you have chosen to be represented on the plate.

you don't need two different cell types or even two different anything. it can simply be a measurement from one sample.

the two different samples being applied is a common way of seeing relative amounts of cDNA. it's usually called comparative genome hybridization in these cases. eg you can compare the cDNA from a tumor and healthy tissue with different colors of florescence.

let's say red for tumor and green for normal. then any locus that "looks" more green than red on the chip is a gene that is downregulated in tumors. any locus more red than green is upregulated in tumors. yellow indicates no change.

bear in mind though, this is simply a measurement of amount. it tells you nothing about causation!
Thanks. So basically on the plate already are sequences you're interested in, and the cDNA you add is everything from whatever cell you're looking at, yes?

nope, it goes up to 40k 3rd year. 10k more in tuition/fees
Oh, I see it now. Dang, didn't know that. That would make my decision a lot harder if got into UCI.

I didn't know you were looking into UCI. I did clinical research internship there...in their nice new shiny hospital. 🙂 fancy.

btws...I broke down and looked in the Emory thread (mostly because a fb friend announced to the universe that he got an Emory Med acceptance and trapped me into having to accept it). Debating whether it is worth the trip to the student center to find out that I may/may not have been accepted.
Ugh.

Well, I'm on the WL at the moment, but I'm not the biggest fan of it. When I thought it was only 15k less than OSU, I wasn't really considering it, but now if I get in it will be like 30k less. :lame:

The reason more women don't go into surgery is less about personality and more about the work/life balance. The only comments I've gotten about "oh, you don't look/seem like a surgeon" are from women in middle age not in the healthcare field. I worked in a surgical office and no one there thought I was silly. Then again, there was only one female surgeon in the practice of about 20 and she was pediatric surgery.

I think it's parallel to the reason there are fewer female CEOs. It's not the education or talent, it's the lifestyle compromise.

i get the "you are def gonna be a surgeon" comment

I get the "you should be a surgeon" comment. And then people wonder why I'm not completely set on doing some kind of surgery.

Make sure you have your ethical situations down - it will come up. Overall, it's not a bad day.

It really is crazy how almost everyone on this thread got an OSU interview. Is there anyone that regularly posts on this thread that applied there and didn't get one?

Ugh.

Do it. We got your back. 👍

JJ did you get any other cali love?

I interviewed at UCI, LA, and SF. I didn't go to my USC interview. No news post-secondary from Stanford, and I got a sec but no interview (technically my file is still open) at SD. Rejected at UCD. Didn't apply to LL.

Don't do it tats.... Fight it!!!! Just let this **** take its course

OSU loves this thread.

I got shut out of all the Cali schools, no interviews at all. So lame.

Yea. I get that too and as much as I hate to admit it-I am seriously questioning the Trauma surgeon path because I want to actually be a part of my future family. Men do this as well, my friend just told me the other day that her brother switched from surgery residency to pathology (yuck) because it was way too difficult for him to maintain his new marriage as a surgeon. There are other really important considerations for everyone too.
My point is-our society is rather inexperienced with female surgeons and it is hard to be supportive of something you do not know enough about. Less support/acceptance for women in the field, in my opinion is what makes many think that it would be nearly impossible to have a balanced existence.

JJ that's realllly impressive... Good luck with the UCI decision.... And it's not like you are losing out by coming to cbus!

Thanks man. Yeah I'm pretty strongly considering OSU even over UCI. If they cost the same, I'd go to OSU no question. Since they're 30k apart, I'll have some thinking to do if I'm in that position. I also have UVa to worry about too, but that's almost too expensive to consider.

UCLA or UCSF trump any of the other three (in terms of personal preference + cost), and I'm hoping either of them will make my decision for me.

True, if enough women surgeons demanded a better lifestyle, it could happen. It's hard for me to accept that I can't "have it all" just because it hasn't been done.

you can have it all 🙂. it really just depends on your mad planning/prioritizing skills...woman or man.

on a dif note..I am at the Chem lib and this guy behind me keeps very deliberately staring at the back of my head. I wonder if he realizes that my screen is reflective enough for me to notice him. hmmmm

wave at him :meanie:

I like this idea.

Maybe the guy is tripping or something and just can't look away.
hahaha...I dunno what his deal is.
maybe if i type:
your staring is making me uncomfortable
in really big letters, he will get the gist?

That's pathetic if half the people who showed up to lal/mem are laker fans. They're actually good this year.... Really good at home too!

so i'm about to talk to the person i want to work with at the school i'm basically waitlisted at. eeeeeeeep. i want to get in sooo badly!

please, sdn deity, let this work out!

all my fingers and toes are crossed for you 🙂

thats right you creepy guy, walk away now, walk away.

haha good job scaring him! but what if he just thought the back of your head is really beautiful and is too shy to tell you?😛

yeah, i'll be crossing my fingers and toes and thumbs and eyes all week!

also, did it work, tats?

Alright 2014ers, important question here:

Who makes the best sub?

haha good job scaring him! but what if he just thought the back of your head is really beautiful and is too shy to tell you?😛
haha that reminded me of

I don't have ne sound in the library so I am just going to pray it has the part I wanted to show lol

ciello...did you mean getting the message to the creepster behind me? if so, yes it did-he promptly got up and walked away. 😛

This is why you shoulda taken my route... You guage whether he was being a jackass or if he's into you and act accordingly. Either way you gotta f with the other person a little bit by being abrasive though haha

tata, go check your mail!!! i have been rooting for you and emory/duke! don't keep me in suspense!

Stoney screw a sub, just get chipotle
I get to have beer at lab group meeting to drown my sorrows in.
dw...🙁 I did, I snuck out while peddie wasn't looking lol. The thing is-our mail center is notoriously slow so I wont know for sure if it is just them or if Emory is giving me the finger this time around for another week I think.
Either way-boo! Thanks for your thoughts though-it means a lot that you guys feel that way 🙂
(the internets is making me sappy)
