Class of 2015... How ya doing?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
That's its own class over there? Wow.
No... not what she meant. Anatomy is a 1.5 semester class (or 3 quarters if you like)... First semester focuses on body. Winter quarter focuses on dog head, then horse head, finally 2 days of chicken. No anatomy in Spring quarter (a cause for celebration for most).

What SOV said. We're also doing the spinal column and, for some reason, the heart. Today was skulls, though, so my poor flabby brain is spinning with processes and foramina.

Interesting. I wish our anatomy course had been about that length. One semester felt just a bit too condensed.

You will come to love those holes. Life is much easier if you pretty much memorize them all and what goes in/out of them.

We got tested on those lovely foramina in the first two weeks of the semester and then they came back to haunt in the last couple of weeks of the semester when we actually got to see the cranial nerves going to their proper place from the brain.😱

So. Much. To. DO.

Anatomy, pathology, virology, histology, ethics, pet loss and grief, pet loss and grief hotline shifts, work, tours, being president, Student Leadership Advisory Council, food animal club, equine club, working out, hanging out with friends, trying to be some semblance of a girlfriend, and oh yeah, personal hygeine.

Don't get me wrong, I love absolutely all of it. It's just that it feels like the REAL test is starting. Academically, winter quarter is the hardest quarter of first year, so things are really picking up in that department. Plus everything else I'm involved in requires infinite emails, meetings, accurate and careful planning and scheduling, and lots and lots of organization. For the first time I feel like I hardly have time to sleep. I feel guilty because I didn't get any studying done tonight, and also it's late and I have a food animal club meeting at 7 am. But I still have to shower and it's pushing 1 am right now. Granted, I did sleep from 7p to 10:30 p.

Oh well, it is what it is and will all be worth it in the end! Just gotta keep trucking I 'spose!

Envious...we start back school on Monday, and have a whoooole semester of large animal anatomy, yippee.

We're all large animal this semester, except for our first lab of the semester included very quickly dissecting chickens and fish. Then we got our goats and ponies.

Haven't been around here for a while but I'm pretty excited for this semester. Pathology, parasitology and epidemiology plus real live ANIMALS and some dead ones too. I just need to motivate myself to get back to studying a little every night...

I've been enjoying break a little too much and it's going to be a rather painful wake up call on Monday morning. Wait...take notes? Like to learn stuff??

This semester is composed of finishing up our Musculoskeletal block, Neurology/Senses/Behavior, GI/Metabolism, and end the year with Nutrition/Toxicology. The professor that I had the hardest time learning from in the last couple blocks is the block leader for Neurology. I'm a little nervous about that one. :scared:

Forward, march!.....left right left right left right left right

You ain't kiddin'....that neuro is a b*tch, I am not going to be ready for classes to resume either. I'm still in "lounge around" mode. Thankfully I still have until the 17th to try and pull myself into routine mode. It's gonna be hard and I am sorry that you have to start yours on Monday. Then it will be over before you know it and it will be smooth summer sailin'😀

I've been back for a week now and I still can't get back into the swing of things. There are some people who are like going through material several times a day after class. I have a hard time opening my book when I get home from class. I've had a lot going on though so I'm hoping that I can get all of that under control and get on it. I mean we have finals for the classes we're in right now in 3 weeks. Ugh

Whoa, how on earth do they do that without burning out? I'm genuinely impressed. I feel accomplished if I can even do ONE mini review of that day's material at the end of the day.

Seriously, we've been back for 2 days and it's been probably at least half review of things we learned before the break and I'm left wondering what I did during the break to occupy the brain cells which should have had this material on lockdown. And as for everyone else out there good luck-- and Elliegirl I'm impressed you guys have club meetings that early, I don't think we'd have many operating clubs if that were the case- most of ours still try to lure us in with the promise of a free meal.

If you're talking about food animal club, then you're absolutely correct-they do lure us in with a free meal 😉 This week it was Sausage McMuffins, some weeks it's biscuits and gravy, some weeks it's Bob Evans, etc. etc. But it's always delicious =D

YES. Don't worry, though. Besides the 1-2 folks who most commonly speak up in lecture - the rest of the class is feeling the same way from the conversations I was hearing all day.

I hope this is true at all schools!! We are whizzing through neurology and I am still sitting here trying to determine what neurological condition I have that has caused me to forget everything I learned in the first semester...😕

I think it happens to everyone, but it gets easier with time. Over break your brain slows down and it really takes a little bit to get back up to speed. I think of it like merging onto a highway from a stop - it's hard and awkward and you think you'll crash, but once you get up to speed it's fine.

What is this 'first semester' you speak of? I was sitting in an immuno lecture today thinking that I'm quite certain I've never taken any vet school classes before.

But hey, who cares. I'm off to Florida for VBMA and NAVC tomorrow, so ... psssshhhhhht... classes..... meh......

You do anatomy of dog, horse, and ruminant in one semester? I thought 3/4 was the shortest time I've heard. Penn used to be one semester years ago. I can't imagine. I guess unless fewer credits were taken at the same time.
I wanted to kill myself with the other classes first semester. Stupid biochem and histo and 10mm pig. Thank god I had bunnity as a lab partner 😀

Yepper.... We do it in one semester.

The first 2/3rds (or so) is carnivore, using cat/dog. The last 1/3rd is horse, ruminant (using cow and goat dissections), and a bit of pig.

The primary focus of the last 1/3rd is horse and ruminant GI. So everybody worked on dissecting a horse. There was one goat group, one cow group, and I can't remember if there was a pig group or if the instructors just had a pig they used for specific parts of interest. A pig showed up, anyway.

Things definitely go faster in the last 1/3rd, since we didn't spend time covering anatomy that isn't significantly different from carnivore. I actually felt like where I would have liked more time was with carnivores to really, really get the fundamentals down.

The instructors are awesome, though. I definitely don't mean this as a criticism of them. And maybe it's just my old age and lack of brain plasticity that makes me think more time would have been nice... 🙂

That is definitely an interesting way to do anatomy. We're in large animal right now, but our entire last test of this class is over birds/reptiles/etc. Breenie and I are in the same lab group though, so it's been pretty great so far.

I can definitely say that I still look forward to class every day, but I do not look forward to each individual lecture. The drive to school is becoming monotonous as well. Today alone I drove to/from campus 3 times. Maybe I should look into hiring a chauffeur?

This block is supposed to be the "hardest", and I can see how it is draining. There's a lot going on, and it seems like we hardly see sunlight, so that doesn't help much. Just 6 and a half more weeks!!

Yeah we do anatomy based on systems and have comparative pro-sections and specimen brought out when we are doing relevant material, but we only get a dog to dissect in our groups.

Blaaaaah scb44f is so right. Anatomy is more fun because I have her in my group, but dang this block is RELENTLESS. 3 exams this week, who knows how many next week, rinse, repeat... for 8 weeks.

We have an "exam" every week in our GI phys course. It's kind of annoying. And nutrition makes me want to scoop my eyeballs out.

gahhh definitely not a fan of the whole class from 8-12 and lab from 1-4 thing. learning in the morning?? what is this?? not to mention staying awake...

With ya. We have more lectures this semester than last and there are some days I'm about to go crazy from staring at the brick walls.

(I feel for the second years; worse for them.)

In other news, today was our first neuro test. Super easy. It's like their setting us up for the other shoe to fall.

As a kinda random aside, this neuro test was the first time I've really approached learning material from sources other than class, class notes, or class text. It's pretty basic neuro anatomy and development, so I went back to my good old anatomy textbook. Studied it on the way down to Florida and back last weekend. Didn't look at lecture notes or class notes at all. Frankly, I didn't really even have an idea of how much we were supposed to know. Essentially aced the test. It was an interesting exercise.... makes me wonder about doing it this way more often.

Went to Mizzou's dairy farm today for a quite literal palpation wetlab. Best day ever!! I even learned how to use an ultrasound, and I found a little baby, its amnion, and the corpus luteum!

Currently attempting to study for Monday's Pathology/Immunology exam and slowly losing my soul at the same time =(

👍👍 Yay!!

👎 Not the soul!!!!!! Best of luck:luck::xf::luck:

I made/froze ~70 dumplings instead of studying this morning. But at least now I will have tasty homemade potstickers WHENEVER I WANT.

I thought it'd be hard to get the packaged ones here, then found a really great Chinese grocery. Oh well. At least now I'm honoring my heritage or whatever.

Also I'm really sick of studying all the time.

Exams are looming and I'm sick of studying already. I want my life back! Just one more anatomy exam and we're done with that class. Raise your hand if you're ready for spring break.

I'm ready to be done with anatomy!!! We have to finish this semester before we are done. It's the hardest class for me to study for and I never seem to remember what I really need to remember.

If that and phys III went poof, I might like this semester. Maybe. (Phys is a professor issue more than a subject issue - I think I could do better with different learning style and test format, but you get what you get!)

2 exams a week...whee! and if we don't have 2 exams that week, its because we have midterms or finals haha. may 9th can't come quickly enough!

3+ exams/week here.

BOOM. ONE UPPED.

Just kidding. It kinda doesn't matter how many there are. My stress level seems to be about the same, regardless of what sort crazy crap they throw at us.

haha you can DEFINITELY keep that one up 😉 i'm already tired of the studying haha. motivation, where did you go?😕

Ugh, I'm sick. At least we only have 2 more weeks of this block. I'm getting really tired of it...

In other news, I'm about to finish up some studying, and then I'm taking the rest of the night off with the boy to play some video games and just hang out since we haven't done that in over a week (and we live together!!). Hopefully it will help make tomorrow a little more bearable.

Sounds awesome, scb44f!!! Hope it helps you get better!

We're in a week of genetics, host defenses, and physiology exams, and the last one is tomorrow. Genetics was straightforward, but immuno more or less picked me up, tossed me against the wall a few times, stomped on me, performed invasive probing, and walked away laughing. Here's to hoping physio is a kinder, gentler test.

Next week ------- no exams. Zilch. It'll be such a breath of fresh air.

that is exactly what happened to me on my immuno exam today. the annoying part is i understand whats going on with all our stuff, i just decided to circle lots of wrong answers. 😡

i am jealous of your no exams week-pharm and physio for us, yayyy...

First anatomy exam of the semester today. (Bijugular trunk? Wut?) Parasit lecture and lab and path next week, and immuno and phys the week after that.

And the week right after spring break has an anatomy exam and phys exam the same week. Not looking forward to it. Also means I have to study all through the break...
