i think pulmonary embolism? haha thats all i thought since dont birth control pills lead to blood clots/increase risk for them? If not idk wtf geek is saying:laugh:

And rhino i took literally every recomended class mostly because it was part of my major. I didnt even know i was doing this actually until i applied to school lol. I dont think its going to matter at all since often what you learn in these classes isnt always medically relvant or in near as great depth. Its like how taking anatomy in college really doesnt do **** to help you with med school anatomy. At best ive been told taking these classes will give you a leg up for like the 1st 8 weeks of med school at best (more likely <4 weeks.) then everyone is equally ****ed and confused 😛

I figured it wouldn't help much, but I'm taking almost every relevent class possible as part of my major. Just curious what other people are doing, b/c there is no way I could fit this stuff in as electives if I was majoring in something else.

edit: I can't wait to be equally f'd with everyone else. 😛

Ugh, my mentor made me remember that I had forgotten to put on my poster but now the school won't let me reprint it and they're out of time slots (research day printing times). Kinko's is charging me $100 to reprint one large poster, and the school recommends it like I have $100's lying around for fun. Ugh I hate them!

ha, so my friends are having an oatmeal wrestling party friday night. its going to be awesome

that sounds kind of gross, not gonna lie. oatmeal can be sticky after a while....not in the funny way, but in a weird lumpy way.

that's why you bring a towel. it'll be fun. oatmeal baths can be therapeutic.

Exactly. I worked on a med-surg floor for two years that got most of the respiratory and neurology patients that were admitted (provided they didn't need the ICU). In those two years, we got enough 20-something women with pulmonary emboli that were on oral contraception to make me never want to take it again. 😱

Just watched a special on Lebron and his high school days. Im not much of a bball fan, but it was superb (and sad at the same time ).

Last night my cable went out for hours. I watched some of the new scrubs on Hulu. First time I've seen the med school version. Kinda, uh, different.

I just dl'd BT's Dreaming on my Palm for my alarm. w00t. 😀

Ew, could you imagine trying to get it out of your hair?

yeah, it would be all over your hair and face. yeah it would.

this is one of the many reasons the pill is not good for individuals or societies.

its a great transition to foreplay

...i like to not have oats covering me like leoprosy (simpsons episode, anyone?)...but that's just me.

I'd like to get his high school "Irish" jersey, it is pretty cool.

I actually liked the new scrubs, toward the end of the original series they made JD too much of a b!tch and even b!tchified Turk a little too. Too bad they cancelled the new series.

My husband is deep...

What if elephants are just other animals with elephantitis? Like, what if that's why they're scared of mice? They WERE mice and now they're like, "Don't look at me!"

Just curious, how many of you have done the "recommended" classes or classes that may help in med school such as: biochemistry, molecular biology, immunology, genetics, physiology, anatomy, microbiology, bacteriology, virology, etc. . .

I know many people say that they won't help much. I'm just curious. I've done the first 6 b/c they are part of my major. I am avoiding microbiology b/c I think it will be boring and I don't want to do it twice (undergrad & med school).

Reposting this question b/c it seems like a better time to get some responses.

Just had the most AMAZING orgo II final this evening. I think I scored high 90s or even perfect. Just felt like sharing with the other hopeful 2015ers. 🙂 I've been working so hard on orgo lately. I'm glad it's over and done with. 😀

Haha, sounds like my boyfriend, it's almost like hearing him talk again :3 (2 more months till he's home for a bit!)

I've taken Physiology and the first semester of A&P 1 (brief stint of madness when I was considering nursing instead). I don't remember much of what I actually learned in Bio 1 & 2, but I don't think I learned as much human physiology as what seems to be on the MCAT, so I think it helps in that respect. I also learned the muscles and bones (most of them, anyway) so I think that'll be slightly helpful come gross anatomy time, even if it's just in a "Hey! I've seen that before," kinda way.

I've taken biochem, cell bio (molec), genetics, anatomy, and microbiology. I'm taking physiology next semester. I LOVED microbio. Granted, it's pretty tough at my school, I find the diseases interesting.

I took A & P when I was taking classes toward being a paramedic/firefighter, now I'm currently taking physiology 2. I definitely think having taken A&P helped with that and physio 1.

The hubs and I don't touch the whacky tobacky, TYVM. We're just naturally nuts.

Here's another gem from this morning...

"On the plus side, only two more days of work after this. If I was a T-rex, I could count it on one hand while eating a stegasaurus!"

I'm not sure why I have such a negative opinion of microbiology, but I just can't seem to get excited about it. I need to pick 1 more bio class as an elective to graduate, but I think I'm going to take this course called the cellular basis of learning & memory or aids, science & society instead.

Microbio is very interesting to me because of the HUGE application of it in medicine, but I wouldn't ever take it again here because I hated how annoying the labs are, haha! I know I'll have to deal with it, but it seemed like all of the labs were "Plate it, grow it, observe" or "Spread it, stain it, observe" and I wished we did a little more than that.

It's okay, man. If you want me to explain you can PM me. No hard feelings, for real.

ETA: Silly forums made it look like my last post didn't go through, sorry for basically repeating myself.

Hey geekchick what kind of rats did you use for your analgesia research? helpless rats?

Is it bad that I don't even remember? It was about 6 years ago. The professor, who is also writing one of my LORs, is going to scan my lab report and send it to me so I can review it (he says he keeps them from all of his past students). We weren't mean to them, though. We mostly made them swim in cold water then tested their tail flick reflex or something.

Just curious b/c stress like forced swim/inescapable shock induces helplessness. I'm working with rats that have been bred to be helpless without being stressed. I read an article about their increased sensitivity to narcotics and increased analgesia and thought it was cool (my PI isn't interested in that aspect though). I wanted to see if they were more prone to addiction to opiates since they are more sensitive to narcotic pain killers after stress. . . but oh well. We are studying the affect of helplessness on sensitivity to decreases in reward and risk aversion. Currently I'm doing lesions of the part of the brain we suspect causes helplessness to see how it affects behavior.

i wish i did some "actual" research like this. alas, my number crunching about obesity will have to do, for now.

That sounds very interesting! We didn't get as fancy as brain lesions.

I know I posted something like this the other day, but I don't think it was in this thread. If it was, I apologize.

I tried SO hard to get more research experience this past year. I applied to eleventy billion jobs at Penn. Two interviews and nothing else. Before that, I tried to get a position when I was taking classes PT in 2008-2009, but I was hugely pregnant in the fall and I don't think anyone wanted to take me on because they'd be working with chemicals (that were probably harmless at that point but I can understand). I would have kept looking but I really needed more hours regardless of the job I took so I got a different clerical position at the hospital where I've been since 2010. Lame. Oh well.

And FTR, if anyone feels so inclined to abbreviate my name to Geek, Geeky, Geekers, etc. I wouldn't mind at all. I feel like calling me Geekchick is... I don't know... formal? 😆

haha I thought saying "Hey Geek," would be offensive, so good to know. Can I call you Geeks then 🙂

I was actually thinking about this last night. Many people have seemed to take on nicknames and everyone's still writing your entire lettered name out.

Haha, my research is soooo far off from medically related stuff

i'm sticking with geekmama

Cuz now that I'm a mama I can't be a chick, is that it?!!? 😡

😉 I like Geekmama.

Oh, and about the research thing, I'm sure it didn't help that my undergraduate degree is in theatre. They probably get my resume and are all "WTF-ever." I was a psych-bio major for a year and I owned all my pre-reqs, dammit! I'd know what I was doing! I hope I get far enough with a place that cares to explain that I actually am kind of interested in research. I'm more interested in being an excellent clinician, but I'm certainly not opposed to it, even if I don't have much proof.
