Class of 2015!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cuz now that I'm a mama I can't be a chick, is that it?!!? 😡

😉 I like Geekmama.

Oh, and about the research thing, I'm sure it didn't help that my undergraduate degree is in theatre. They probably get my resume and are all "WTF-ever." I was a psych-bio major for a year and I owned all my pre-reqs, dammit! I'd know what I was doing! I hope I get far enough with a place that cares to explain that I actually am kind of interested in research. I'm more interested in being an excellent clinician, but I'm certainly not opposed to it, even if I don't have much proof.
ideally, i'll get to do my own research and practice when the time comes. i've got a few studies i'd like to pursue.

That sounds very interesting! We didn't get as fancy as brain lesions.

I know I posted something like this the other day, but I don't think it was in this thread. If it was, I apologize.

I tried SO hard to get more research experience this past year. I applied to eleventy billion jobs at Penn. Two interviews and nothing else. Before that, I tried to get a position when I was taking classes PT in 2008-2009, but I was hugely pregnant in the fall and I don't think anyone wanted to take me on because they'd be working with chemicals (that were probably harmless at that point but I can understand). I would have kept looking but I really needed more hours regardless of the job I took so I got a different clerical position at the hospital where I've been since 2010. Lame. Oh well.

I'm lucky that:

1) my school had a faculty research mentorship program. I basically did grunt work, but b/c the program required my mentor to teach me to write a research proposal, research paper, and everyone in the program had to do a 15 minute presentation at a symposium. It guaranteed a positive experience even if I was just doing grunt work (which is where most people have to start too).
2) My undergrad has a medical school, which is where my lab is (PI is dual faculty at the undergrad/med school). This worked out awesome for me b/c our project is very applicable to people. Our work is ultimately on the neuroscience behind depression.

I'd like to branch out into something else but I made a commitment to finish this project and I'm going to graduate soon anyway. I like doing the animal surgery though.

I work at a hospital associated with a MAJOR research institution and all the docs I know doing a fellowship are supposed to spend 1 day a week dong research as part of there fellowship. However several of them told me that they just use that day to catch up on paperwork and run errands. I wonder how hard it is to balance clinical care with research. Seems like most people pick one or the other.

or hire PA's/NP's for clinical care, and pre-meds for research... then you can just be a manager for both haha.

You must be a business minor

That sounds a lot like a PI, hire post-docs and put your name on all their work 👍

Edit: you don't want to hire pre-meds they will just want to shadow you all day and put their name on your publications.

Yeah, see, my hospital is a little community hospital. Sometimes I wish I worked at the big teaching hospital nearby. Just about every medical school in the city has an option to do rotations there. If we buy a house next year, and I'm accepted this cycle, I think I might beg them to let me do my clerkships there.

haha with the current state of the unknowns in medicine we're all going to need to develop a business sense, beyond the typical doc, in order to make the salaries we want.

not a business minor, but i've been around the business world via dad's profession. also, one of the docs i shadowed shared a lot of his model with me.

I wish I had taken some business classes. My current model for private practice: plasma tv in the waiting room, lots of PA's to help with the paper work, and a smokin' hot receptionist behind the counter ready to offer fiji water and fresh fruit to the patients. 😛

There are no med schools within hours of me 🙁

sounds like a good start. i think i'm going to have a main office with one or two PA's. then a couple satellite offices with a PA at each. this all depends on my speciality. i've got something else up my sleeve too.

One thing that working for a hospital has over private practice is that if you are in private practice and you want to go on vacation/mission trip then you still have to pay your staff even though you will have no income. One of the plastic surgeons I work with goes to a foreign country and fixes cleft palates, but he looses a lot of money b/c he has to pay his staff even though he's not making money. An anesthesiologist who goes with him just takes time off from the hospital (their medical group is cool too b/c they have a trust that covers all off their malpractice ie: no monthly malpractice payments).

each definitely has it's ups and downs. i think certain specialties probably fit with one system over another. it seems like it would make a lot more sense for an anesthesiologist to work for a hospital, whereas, a family doc is probably better off in private practice if he has any business savvy.

isn't usf kinda close ish? miami and boca aren't TOO far either i suppose.

That's why you work at a PA, there aren't many standalone private practices anymore.

pa?

I'm not to savvy on the business side. Is that the same as a medical group?

yea pretty similar, i think the definition is a bit more general. you get a lot of flexibility when you work with a group, and probably even more so if you work under a large umbrella company.

for all of you

this got scary real when i signed up for the MCAT in november.

I'm pretty excited, I think the toughest month will be July b/c by then I'll have submitted secondary apps and be stressing on getting interviews.

On a lighter note: Merry Draft-mas! First round of the NFL draft is on tonight!

haha I guess I'm a loser too b/c I love it. However there is a reason that the first round is on in primetime for the first time tonight. Losers all across the country will be discussing the possibilities and watching tonight 😀

lol yah i know im not the only one...its just like looking at it from afar no matter what mel kiper (who i have no idea why the **** hes seen as an expert he has no real qualifications and is always wrong?) and mcshay (who at least has some real credentials and tends to be more right) say we dont know if its a good draft. Drafts take a good 3 years to see who was "good." I mean 2 years ago, in the 08 draft everyone including all experts said the chiefs just dominated the draft that year they got glenn dorsey and everyone else. Now look at this ****.

Round 1 Pick 5 (5) Glenn Dorsey DT 6'1" 297 ???

Round 1 Pick 15 (15) (From Lions) Branden Albert OG 6'6 309 Starter

Round 2 Pick 4 (35) Brandon Flowers CB 5'10 189 Starter

Round 3 Pick 10 (73) (From Broncos through Vikings) Jamaal Charles RB 5'11 200 #2 RB

Round 3 Pick 13 (76) (From Lions) Brad Cottam TE 6'8 270 1st year starter

Round 3 Pick 19 (82) (From Vikings) DaJuan Morgan S 6'0 205 ???

Round 4 Pick 6 (105) Will Franklin WR 6'1 214 Waived 4/13

Round 5 Pick 5 (140) Brandon Carr CB 6'0 207 Starter

Round 6 Pick 4 (170) Barry Richardson OT 6'7 320 ???

Round 6 Pick 16 (182) (From Vikings) Kevin Robinson WR 6'0 190 Waived 4/21

Round 7 Pick 3 (210) Brian Johnston DE 6'5 276 Waived 5/27

Round 7 Pick 32 (239) (From Giants) Mike Merritt TE 6'3 270 Waived 2/24

albert, brandon carr and flowers are decent players, they could become dominant its unknown, but the rest are basically nothing or already trash as they were waived. This went from the best draft class of the year to maybe an average at best...so much for the experts. Its just so unknown but for some reason i still care haha

the only draft i watch is the NBA draft. 1) i'm a basketball junkie 2) its only 2 rounds

3 starters and a backup RB in a single draft is pretty good imo. and big guys like glenn dorsey usually nee a couple years to round into shape, e.g. mario williams.

Isn't Jamal Charles going to start this year? He seems decent and has kick return value also. My team has been on the cusp of going all the way and we need a NT and top rated RB to get it done. What teams do you guys follow? I'm a Chargers fan, but I follow the NFL pretty close b/c I also play fantasy football (for money) with my friends.

The Panthers are nearby, but I've considered myself a Colts fan since Peyton got there because I followed him at UT while my sister went to school there.

i would say its somewhat unknown. Hes starting but mostly because they have nothing else. For a 3rd round pick i think you are hoping for more value then a back up running back and an average return man. But i guess i could list him as average because at least hes contributing in small ways.

I follow everything in the nfl lol. I guess id say i follow the colts and niners? I dont like the colts as much as it is watching manning is amazing and i have a lot of respect for what he has done. I hate the chargers badly and the raiders are just not even a real nfl team haha...so that leaves the niners as my only home team (though norcal isnt really home)

I could see why a colts fan would hate the Chargers, since we have owned the 😛

actually Peyton Manning is a perfect example of why the draft is important. The colts took Manning and the Chargers took Ryan Leaf and we all know how both of those moves worked out.

I agree the Raiders suck, they aren't even a real team! I want to see who they take this year b/c it will be hilarious.

As a kid everyone I knew liked the 49ers (Joe cool, steve young, Jerry rice, Ronnie lott) or the Cowboys (aikman, Emmitt smith, prime time neon Deon!!!, and michael Irvin). The 49ers look like they are turning things around with Singletary, he brings that swagger.

if you didnt like the niners or the cowboys in the 90s something wasn't right.
